Which One Of These Do I Have To Spill Water On To Make People Irrationally Start Buying $FB

Oct 23, 4:18AM

Screen Shot 2012-10-22 at 8.02.55 PMThose eighteen words got a founder and I kicked off of the trading floor of the NYSE earlier this evening. Because, as we shuffed out of the Girls Who Code event held there earlier tonight, we looked at the jumble of computers and stock tickers on the first floor of 18 Bond Street and exclaimed in awe, "So this is where it all goes down, huh?" And of course, because we're tech people and troublemakers we're like, "So how does it work?" specifically joking, in light of all the recent tech stock collapses, "Which one of these do I have to spill water on (okay, we may have said wine) to make people irrationally buy Facebook?"

Twitter Is Testing A "Like" And "Star" Button In Lieu Of "Favorite." Isn't The Concept Of "Like" Already Broken?

Oct 23, 1:24AM

6174430367_ff5555868e_oI've never really been a fan of tapping a "Like" button on Facebook. Mostly because it doesn't always mean that I like something. I use that button as a way to say "hey I looked at this and it meant something", but maybe I use Facebook incorrectly. Today, The Next Web surfaced what seems to be a test on Twitter, with the labels of "like" and "star" instead of the word "favorite" when it comes to tweets.

The Photo-Sharing Wars Aren't Over Yet. Snapchat And Cinemagram Are Quietly Blowing Up.

Oct 23, 12:21AM

photo-chart-rankingWhen Instagram's roughly $750 million sale to Facebook closed, it seemed that the photo-sharing chapter in mobile app history closed. Instagram had definitively won, while many startups like Mixed Media Labs' Picplz and Path either pivoted or completely redid their apps. But if you look at the top charts today, maybe this race isn't so finished. In fact, there are a couple of younger photo-sharing apps that have quietly blown up over the last month or two.

Marissa Mayer Leads First Investor Call As Yahoo CEO With Emphasis On Hiring & Culture, Call For More Mobile Focus

Oct 22, 10:10PM

marissa-mayer-thmbIn what is arguably her largest major public speaking appearance since taking over the CEO role at Yahoo this past summer, Marissa Mayer kicked off the third quarter conference call with investors and analysts this afternoon by digging into a decidedly non-technical topic: People. In particular, Mayer utilized the first few minutes of the call to explain with enthusiasm why she's focused so much of her energy during her first 100 days as CEO on initiatives such as hiring new executives and bolstering Yahoo's internal company culture. The human element is central to bringing Yahoo back to its one-time spot as a top consumer Internet company, she said.

Oct 22, 10:03PM

windows8Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett predicts that Microsoft's Windows 8 will get off to a slow start in 2013, but will take hold in 2014. Windows 8, Gillett argues, will keep Microsoft relevant on the PC, but it will remain "simply a contender in tablets, and a distant third in smartphones." Windows 8, he says, will "simply stop the shrinking," but it won't be a fix.

Welcome To The Beta: Windows 8 Will Succeed, Despite All The FUD

Oct 22, 9:13PM

fudMicrosoft is already screwing it up. Microsoft can't win. Windows 8 is sunk. Seriously: to read the headlines this last week you'd think Microsoft wasn't still one of the premier tech manufacturers in the world. While I would agree that it faces a number of challenges, both from Apple and its own OEM partners, Windows 8 will thud into the landscape with more a bang and much less than a whimper.
