Why Zynga Failed

Oct 05, 10:22PM

zyngafallsThe year was 2008 and Zynga had it all figured out. Facebook became a portal to games for those who had never played. Viral growth there was unchecked. Facebook ad rates were low, so buying traffic was cheap. And most games were played on the desktop. But soon everything changed, and Zynga never recovered. Here's a look at four big shifts that caused Zynga's power and share price to plummet.

The End Of Glasses? Eye-Shaping Contacts Might Prevent Nearsightedness

Oct 05, 5:45PM

tina-feyUnless you're a Hipster, eyeglasses are a major pain: kids wearing them get bullied, they're expensive, they don't play well with sports, and they can't make up for perfect 20/20 vision. Finally, there may be a cure for nearsightedness ("Myopia") on the horizon. Biomedical scientist David Trolio has experimented with a new contact lens that prevents the eye from malforming in the first place, by refocusing light as it hits the eye. He and his colleagues at State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry "successfully reduced the elongation of the eye that causes myopia progression."

Starbucks' Square Rollout Gets A Launch Date; No Loyalty Card Integration (Yet)

Oct 05, 5:37PM

SquareAt its three-day Global Leadership Conference this week, Starbucks announced further details about its planned rollout and support for Square's mobile payments platform. First revealed in August, the deal will allow iPhone and Android users to pay using the Square mobile app at Starbucks' 7,000 U.S. locations. Now, we have a more exact timeframe for that launch: early November. (Previously, the company had said "before the holidays.") But Starbucks has also been busy updating its own native mobile applications, which allow customers to pay with their Starbucks card via an app. And now that app supports Passbook on iOS, too. While it's good that a company like Starbucks is embracing mobile payment innovation, in the immediate future, mobile payments are going to get a little messy.

AffinityLive Sync Creates A Giant Shared Inbox For Your Entire Team Or Company

Oct 05, 4:53PM

activity_streamOne of the most frustrating things that can happen at work is finding out that an important email is locked away in a colleague's inbox, and you can't get a hold of some crucial information until that colleague comes back online. That's a problem that startup AffinityLive is trying to solve with its new product AffinityLive Sync. CEO Geoff Mcqueen describes Sync as "Yammer combined with Dropbox combined with Splunk," all on top of a giant shared inbox. As analogies go, it's a bit unwieldy, but the idea is that Sync serves as storage, while also allowing users to search for, interact around, and analyze data about relevant emails.
