Brewster: The Smart Contacts App That Wants To Rule Them All, Now Conquering Europe, Too
Oct 20, 5:00AM
Brewster, the relationship-centric iOS address book app that went live in the U.S. in July with some fanfare (and a little controversy for good measure), is picking up some more steam. On the heels of an app update earlier this month, this week it is launching across Europe, available for the first time in iOS App Stores across the region.
Dissecting The Sony Nexus X, The Fake That Launched A Thousand Stories
Oct 20, 1:51AM
So hey, remember that Sony Nexus X image that made the rounds earlier this week? The one that more than a few commentors called a hoax after I ran a story about it? Well, the skeptics among you were right -- creator of the faux-Nexus came forward not long ago with a tell-all Tumblr spelling out what he did and (more importantly) how he did it.

Waze Is The Only App To Gain Meaningful Marketshare After Apple Maps Fail, Onavo Finds
Oct 20, 12:07AM
The poor reception for Apple's new maps app temporarily boosted usage for other map applications, but it didn't actually increase longer-term marketshare for any of them -- except for one. Israel's Waze boosted its market share to 10 percent of U.S. iPhone users from 7 percent, according to a study from Sequoia Capital-backed mobile data compression company Onavo.

NYC Invests $12M To Provide Free Fiber Build-Out To 240 Startups
Oct 19, 10:52PM
The city of New York has just launched the ConnectNYC Fiber Challenge to help small NY-based companies get a free high speed fiber build-out in their offices. In order to win the prize, you have to submit an application to justify that you need very high speed connectivity -- tech startups seem to have an edge in the challenge. In all, 240 companies will each receive a chunk of the $12 million investment over two years. The average cost of a build-out is approximately $50,000.
Mark Zuckerberg To Speak Tomorrow At Y Combinator Startup School
Oct 19, 10:19PM
Mark Zuckerberg has been understandably very busy in the months since he took Facebook public -- closing and integrating the billion dollar Instagram acquisition, overhauling Facebook's mobile strategy, jetting to far-flung places to build the company's international presence, and such -- that he has spent remarkably little time giving interviews and speeches. In fact, his talk with Michael Arrington last month at Disrupt was his first official on-stage interview since Facebook's initial public offering way back in May.

In Paywalls We Trust: How The Magazine Industry Can Weather The Coming Digital Transition
Oct 19, 9:28PM
Newsweek, the magazine that wasn't U.S. News & World Report or Time, is going completely digital and will offer something called Newsweek Global in place of its international selection of paper tiles. Editor Tina Brown describes this move, which will take place at year's end, as "embracing the future."
You Are Old Now, Says GOG's Massive Interplay Games Sale, But That's Okay
Oct 19, 9:08PM
GOG (formerly known as Good Old Games) is having a huge Interplay sale that gives you 32 games for $34.99 (or more), or anywhere between $13.95 and $34.99 for 20 titles, or 8 games for whatever you want to pay under that. This is an amazing deal that will get you some classic titles you may well have grown up with. And that could make you feel old, but maybe good also. Nostalgia.
How To Choose Your Startup Idea
Oct 19, 8:15PM
Tomorrow hundreds will meet up for Startup School, YC's annual event for gutsy hackers thinking about founding a company. It's one of my favorite events, and this year's attendees will get to hear from everyone from Mark Zuckerberg to Stripe's Patrick Collison to Weebly's David Rusenko. It's oversubscribed again, so here are some thoughts on how to choose an idea for your startup for those who can't make it.
Build Your Own Dark Paper Craft Gods With Foldable.Me
Oct 19, 8:14PM
I've been avoiding writing about Foldable.Me for a while because I find the process of paper craft to be in the realm of obsessive hobbies that require a degree of intensity and sufficiently unsweaty palms that I simply do not possess. But, we must ask ourselves, what if a startup did the hard, hard work of printing out laser-cut paper craft models for you without all that mussing about with an Exacto and an aversion to mature adult relationships?
Snail Mail Election Fail: 21% Of Absentee Ballots Not Counted
Oct 19, 7:47PM
A new report finds that 1 in 5 requested absentee mail-in election ballots never got counted in 2008, recommending that voters instead turn to polling places with electronic voting machines. So-called non-precinct voting has nearly doubled since 2000, rising from 14% to 28% in 2008. "it is clear that mail-in balloting faces administrative questions before we can be confident that it is as reliable as the in-person voting methods," explains the Caltech-MIT Voting Technology Project report.

Facebook Officially Begins Shutting Down "Questions" Product, May Refocus On Search
Oct 19, 7:22PM
It was no Quora. Today Facebook finally confirmed it is retiring Questions, which originally launched in July 2010. The Questions Dashboard and option to share a poll to the news feed are being removed. Questions will still be available in Groups and Pages, plus you can look at your old ones but it seems Facebook's resources are better spent building something else, like, oh I don't know, search.
Apsalar's Mobile Analytics Can Now Track The Effectiveness Of Facebook's New App Ads
Oct 19, 7:18PM
San Francisco-based mobile analytics startup Apsalar got some plum access to Facebook's new ad network for promoting mobile apps. The company can now help developers see in real-time how their spending on Facebook ads is affecting downloads of their mobile apps. Apsalar's marketing tool 'Campaign Source Insights' lets developers see where their users are coming from -- whether that's a regular mobile banner ad network or a another developer that works with them as a cross-promotion partner. It also measures how much users from all of these sources are spending so that a developer can see where the most valuable users are coming from.

Oct 19, 6:36PM
"Since the start of this year, if you turned up at a product review and showed anything other than mobile at the start or for the bulk of the presentation, you'd be asked to go back and do it again" said Facebook's VP of corp dev Vaughn Smith today at the Global Mobile Internet Conference. Facebook is sending the message that it's evolved into a mobile-first company ready to thrive on the small screen.

Google Ventures Hires Its First Designers In Residence, Stanford's Caroline O'Connor And Xbox Designer Brian Yeung
Oct 19, 6:13PM
In what it describes as another effort to make its portfolio companies better at design, Google Ventures is announcing a new Designer in Residence program. The firm had already created a Design Studio where its startups could get help through design sprints, workshops, mentoring, and recruiting. With the new program, designers are matched with multiple companies, and they work together for several months. I received an early copy of a blog post describing the position, in which Google Ventures writes:
