Changemakrs Looks To Reinvent Inspirational Quotes For A More Social Web

Oct 03, 12:26AM

Screen Shot 2012-10-01 at 7.57.47 PM"Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations." -- Steve Jobs A few months ago, former Facebooker Sacha Tueni and Matthias Wagner were working on a Twitter client. Yes, a Twitter client -- several years after Tweetdeck launched and Seesmic pivoted toward being a social media reader. While their app Zerobird was good at filtering interesting content, investors weren't biting. It was also going to be a long uphill battle in the app store and on Twitter's increasingly politically complicated platform. So they took some good advice to heart. Steve Jobs' advice, in fact. They built a tribute site to the late visionary. It was spartan, with that famous photograph of him sitting in an unfurnished house. They overlaid some of his best advice over that picture.

Starting today, Google Apps users can call and email Google for support with "Chrome installation, functionality, security, browser policy settings and Google Apps interoperability for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux."

Home 3D Printing Is Killing The Manufacturing Industry

Oct 02, 10:16PM

3D-printingIf you've followed the news, a collective of hackers recently rented a 3D printer to build a real, working gun. The group, Defense Distributed ,began the project but once the renter, Stratasys, discovered what they were building, they took the printer back. Writes the Danger Room:
Cody Wilson planned in the coming weeks to make and test a 3-D printed pistol. Now those plans have been put on hold as desktop-manufacturing company Stratasys pulled the lease on a printer rented out for Wiki Weapon, the internet project lead by Wilson and dedicated to sharing open-source blueprints for 3-D printed guns. Stratasys even sent a team to seize the printer from Wilson's home.

After Saving Users $1M, BillGuard Integrates With Passbook To Track All Your Credit Cards In One Place

Oct 02, 10:05PM

billguard-pictureWith the launch of iOS 6, Apple added a new feature called Passbook, which will allow users to collect all of their loyalty, rewards, and payment accounts in a single virtual wallet. So far we've only seen a few companies take advantage of the app, loyalty rewards startup Kiip. But it's still a pretty fragmented market -- if you want to view your personal debit or credit card, you better hope that at some point your banking provider creates a compatible app. That is, until now. One of our favorite startups, BillGuard, has become one of the first financial applications to integrate with Apple's Passbook.

Oct 02, 9:58PM

nokiaSamsung loves to bash the iPhone and its legions of dedicated fans. And now Nokia has thrown down, too. Nokia announced the stunning Lumia 920 last month. In several ways, it's an anti-iPhone with a large screen, forward-thinking hardware features, and, yes like this ad brags, multiple color options.

However, none of them seems to have become a huge, sustainable hit yet, and Deeyon CEO Joe Kalfa says he's taking a different approach — not just general, unstructured conversations, but "live, real-time video debates."

Oct 02, 9:02PM

41a3a0a1f0a0730ddb4083aa593563b6_largeThe update cycle of consumer electronics can make a mess of your Kickstarter plans, but one new project that just launched is designed to provide a useful products that remains useful no matter what changes come down the road, in terms of modes of connectivity or hardware design. It's the CompleteDock, and I had the chance to sneak a peek at an early, functional prototype at Disrupt SF this year.

Marc Andreessen On Facebook's Monetization Plans: Successful Companies Defer Gratification

Oct 02, 8:55PM

marc andreessenThere's lots of criticism going around about Facebook's monetization strategy, and in a similar vein, it's pretty common to criticize startups that grow without worrying about revenue. But venture capitalist and Facebook board member Marc Andreessen said today that's looking at things the wrong way. In fact, he argued that great companies have one thing in common — "a willingness to defer gratification." Andreessen, along with Sheryl Sandberg, was interviewed on-stage by Charlie Rose at the IAB MIXX advertising conference. He said it's common to complain about Facebook and other new companies by saying that they're just run by "a bunch of kids," "Facebook will never be able to monetize," and that "it's all falling apart." Then these companies turn into big businesses, and the critics say, "Wow, that was a fluke."

Scaring Users Into Buying Bogus AntiVirus And Porn Scrubbing Software Gets $160M Fine

Oct 02, 8:52PM

scareware_sysdefscan_crop1The Federal Trade Commission brought the hammer down on predatory advertisers who scare users into believing that their system is infected with virus and porn. The peddlers of so-called "scareware" are facing a $163 million fine for  misrepresenting "expressly or by implication, that they had conducted scans of consumers' computers and detected security or privacy issues, including viruses, spyware, system errors, and pornography." Users who surf the internet enough will recognize scareware advertisements as the ones pretending to have found malicious content on their computer and then, conveniently, offer an expensive solution ($30-$100) to fix it.

Sheryl Sandberg: We're More Afraid Of Losing By Standing Still

Oct 02, 8:30PM

Screen Shot 2012-10-02 at 1.13.16 PMIn an interview at New York's IAB conference, Charlie Rose asked Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg if Facebook had ever made assumptions that weren't right. Sheryl Sandberg confirmed yes, and referenced Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's comments about the failure of Facebook's HTML 5 efforts at TechCrunch Disrupt. Sandberg implied that these sorts of failures were part of the company's strategy: purposefully going big even if it means failure or slow monetization.

Forget Saying Happy Birthday To Your Friends On Facebook, It's All About Gifts Now

Oct 02, 7:49PM

7111590033_4ca79f297f_zWe know that Facebook is in full-gear when it comes to monetization. It was obvious the second that the company announced its "Gifts" offering, which lets you send a physical or virtual item to your buddies. It's kind of cool, and the first gift I've ordered is in the mail. One of the things that I enjoy doing the most on Facebook is saying "Happy Birthday!" to someone on their wall. Facebook had made this a super simple process by adding a quick link on your Newsfeed that said "Write on their Timeline." Well, that easy shortcut is gone now, and "Give them a gift" has replaced it.

Oct 02, 7:49PM

oraclecloud-1Oracle made a gesture to developers today with a new platform play it unveiled at Oracle OpenWorld. But a closer look shows Oracle is lumping developer services with every possible "cloud" offering you can imagine that the company sells. It's all of course still on the Oracle cloud, a beast of sorts - part cloud, part hosted and something in between.

Steam Starts Selling Windows Apps Just Before Windows Store Launch

Oct 02, 7:30PM

Steam-LogoAs anticipated in August, digital game seller Steam is now offering Windows non-game applications. It acts like a traditional app store. After the reviewing process, apps are available to purchase in a centralized store. Users can choose where to install their apps in the latest Steam beta. However, like Amazon's Appstore for Android, Valve can discount apps if it thinks that it would benefit the customer and the developer.
