No cobalt, no Tesla?
Jan 01, 5:00PM
The battery industry uses 42 percent of global cobalt production, critical for Lithium-ion cells. Much of the world’s supply of cobalt comes out of Africa. Chinese players recently bought controlling stakes in one of Africa’s largest known cobalt sources. Tesla has stated that the cobalt it needs will be sourced in North America, but the math doesn’t add up. Is Tesla doomed? Read More
It's The Jons 2016!
Jan 01, 2:00PM
Happy New Year! 2016 was … well, we will not soon forget it. Brexit; Trump; the Grim Reaper’s celebrity killing spree; and, on the upside, a lot of magnificent tech achievements and breakthroughs. But The Jons are not about that. The Jons, an annual award named (in an awe-inspiring fit of humility) after myself, go to tech’s more dubious achievers. And hoo boy were there a lot… Read More
Consider ethics when designing new technologies
Jan 01, 1:00AM
In the weeks since the U.S. presidential election, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been firefighting. Not literally, but figuratively. Widespread accusations assert that his social media company contributed to the election’s unexpected outcome by propagating fake news and “filter bubbles.” The case poses a thorny question: How do we ensure that technology works for society? Stroy Moyd's dating show in an Uber goes from meme to mainstream
Dec 31, 9:01PM
For years, Oakland based standup Stroy Moyd has been driving for Uber and Lyft part-time to generate supplemental income. It’s a familiar story to anyone in a creative industry— even though Moyd was headlining at top San Francisco clubs like the Punch Line and Cobbs, and opening for icons like Dave Chappelle at Fox Theater in Oakland, comedy didn’t always pay his… Read More
Reverse-engineering the universal translator
Dec 31, 9:00PM
Cinema critics keep raving about Arrival, a sci-fi drama focusing on one linguist’s attempts to decipher an alien language. Star Trek recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. As a language geek and a sci-fi fan, I felt it only logical to look into the feasibility of the universal translator, the device used by the crew of the Starship Enterprise. Read More
How male allies can support women in technology
Dec 31, 5:00PM
There are so many reasons that men should get involved and be true allies to women in tech: It’s the right thing to do. It’s good for business. Diverse teams that reflect the end user create better results for customers. Male allies respect and appreciate their female teammates. They believe in equality. But you’re not a male ally until women in tech identify you as one. Read More
Toymakers are the early adopters pushing AR into the mainstream
Dec 31, 3:30PM
One indicator of how the market is apparently more comfortable with AR than it is with its immersive sibling, VR, is that one of its earliest adopters are toymakers. Read More
Kayako's CEO on building a bootstrapped business
Dec 31, 2:18PM
Kayako isn’t a new company — the bootstrapped business has been around for 16 years — but it does have an interesting story. Kayako has never taken outside funding. It has offices in three countries, is profitable and continues to grow. TechCrunch visited their London headquarters to chat with founder and CEO Varun Shoor to hear about Kayako’s history and his… Read More
Weekly Roundup: Obama imposes sanctions on Russian intelligence, Snapchat and Oculus eat up startups
Dec 31, 5:13AM
This year, Donald Trump’s U.S. election triumph sent Silicon Valley into a spiral of uncertainty, Facebook addressed its fake news problem, the IPO landscape saw little action and the UK separated form the EU. Snapchat rebranded to Snap Inc. and launched its Spectacles hardware product. Twitter is still fighting its abuse problem, Yahoo suffered two massive breaches and Samsung phones… Read More
2017 will be a strong year for venture capital
Dec 31, 2:00AM
What does my crystal ball say about the outlook for venture capital in 2017? The building blocks of a better year are in place. Many venture capital firms are flush with cash, startup valuations have become more reasonable, technology industry M&A is robust and the technology IPO market is improving. Read More
Why you probably won't invest in the next unicorn
Dec 30, 10:00PM
Value creation in enterprise tech is often driven by a cohort of exits, while value creation in consumer tech is generally driven by large, individual exits — a phenomenon I recently dug into. What the data revealed is that there is of late a trend of larger consumer exits, such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. If this trend continues, that’s very good news for… Read More

Dec 30, 8:30PM
After spending the better part of 2016 researching, analyzing and experimenting in the Virtual Reality industry, here is what I’ve found to be the Top 10 VR experiences of the past year. This subjectively compiled list is informed by my own experiences spending more than 100 hours in Virtual Reality across all major platforms, as well as from observing first-time experiences, reactions… Read More
Uru finds the best places to introduce ads in online videos
Dec 30, 8:29PM
New York City-based startup Uru is working on a new way for video publishers to make money. Imagine watching a normal-looking online video — except that on some of the surfaces (say, on the cabinet behind the stars of a cooking video), you’ll see logos or other art promoting a sponsor. Okay, that might actually sound a bit annoying, but Uru co-founder and CEO Bill Marino argued… Read More
Fam lets you do group videochats directly within iMessage
Dec 30, 6:03PM
In my opinion, one of FaceTime’s major flaws is the lack of group video chat. Sure, apps like Skype, ooVoo and now Messenger let you do group video chats, but it’s just not as seamless as FaceTime. And while Houseparty has also recently entered the group video chat race, they are focused more on providing a shared space for all of your friends to pop in and out of a video chat.… Read More
The real political divide is education
Dec 30, 6:00PM
The two main political parties in this country are about to face a challenge that will create a complete realignment as politicians are forced to choose between robots and people. The real question, as the parties realign themselves, is who will be for the robots and who will be for the workers. Read More

Iran has banned Clash of Clans for promoting violence and tribal conflict
Dec 30, 5:03PM
Earlier this week The Ministry of Justice in Iran blocked Clash of Clans because psychologists in the country believe the game promotes violence and what they are describing as ‘tribal conflict’. They also state that, among other findings, that the game negatively affects family life for youth, who psychologists believe are addicted to playing. I reported earlier this year that… Read More
LG's Hub Robot sounds like a mobile Amazon Echo
Dec 30, 4:24PM
LG and Samsung have really taken advantage of the calm before the CES storm by teasing out their product announcements, one by one. LG’s certainly ahead in terms of sheer strangeness here, having already announced a floating speaker and a wearable speaker collar. The Seoul-based electronics giant will also apparently be showing off a bunch of robots at the show. It’s not the… Read More

Dec 30, 2:38PM
The payload is now on board for SpaceX’s first return to launch following its September 1 explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket on a launchpad during fueling.
