A deterioration in the global economic outlook is leading to scant overall growth in 2012 enterprise IT spending, says Gartner. However the analyst says its third quarter outlook points to "more substantial growth" next year -- assuming "significant fiscal crises" are avoided in the U.S. and Europe. Its view is enterprises have cut IT spending so much they have little room to reduce it further.

Glitch, the online, multiplayer gaming world created by Tiny Speck, is
closing down December 9 after
failing to get enough user traction, and then
failing to find a buyer for the product. But... he is also cooking up something else.

Design-focused e-commerce site
Fab has been steadily trying to decrease the amount of time it takes from when a purchaser hits purchase on the site to when they actually receive the purchased item. Via new warehouses and shipping models, Fab has been able to get items to users within a few days as opposed to a few weeks. And today, Fab is debuting a new feature--free shipping.

Brightcove expanded beyond video content management and
rolled out its platform for mobile app development about 18 months ago. It then released an update to the platform,
which included a free version under an open source license, just a few months ago. Now, it's updated the platform again, adding improved features for mobile app developers who wish to create hybrid mobile apps.

Tonight during
Reid Hoffman's interview with Steve Ballmer, the two talked about everything Microsoft. Now that Ballmer is talking about his competitors he let out a few bonzo words when it came to Google and Apple and the state of their phone ecosystems, especially when it comes to apps.

At the
Churchill Club in Santa Clara, two tech titans sat down to have a conversation. LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman interviewed Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer at an event with "tech influencers and innovators," and a bunch of of us press folk. Ballmer is riding on the release of Windows 8, Surface and the Windows 8 Phone, so there is plenty to talk about.

I've used a few wireless, always-on webcams in my day and I've found
Dropcam to be the best. Suddenly, however, Dropcam just got better.

I spent a few hours on the LinkedIn campus a few weeks ago, with the sole mission of learning more about
the new LinkedIn profile redesign. It was quite a shift from its previous iteration, and instead of just letting the regular news cycle and announcement go without further detail, I wanted to actually spend time with the people who put their ideas, blood, sweat and tears into the project. As you might know, something like this isn't easy, especially when you have as many users as LinkedIn does. Not only that, but there are many different types of LinkedIn users who are on the site for a slew of reasons: people looking to connect, people looking for a job and recruiters looking for talent. How do you design and redesign
one site to make all of those people happy? That's what I set out to learn.

When you've got a lot of things going on, it's easy to lose track of where you left your mobile phone, keychain, wallet, or handbag -- and the time you spend trying to find them just as you're running out the door can make the difference between being on time or running late. That's where a startup called
Phone Halo wants to step in. The company is focused completely on making useful little gadgets and software applications that help you keep track of your important stuff from keychains to, of course, phones. Phone Halo's newest gadget is called the
WalletTrackR, and it could be its handiest device yet.

If you've spent any time taking care of children, aging parents or those with special needs, you know it's hard work. Staying on top of and organizing files, contacts and medications, while coordinating with caregivers and trying to keep all that information secure and private is challenging to say the least. This is where
CareZone comes into play. Since
launching in February of this year, the Seattle-based startup has been building out a private, secure online service that allows people and families to better take care of their loved ones.

Andreessen Horowitz General Partner
Peter Levine took the stage at the
Defrag conference today and said what has become pretty apparent these days: There's a renaissance happening in the enterprise and the change it brings will go deep and see the emergence of a new generation of creativity that will change the way we live and work.

Thanks to the growth of the web in recent years and the advent of a number of startups making art- and design-focused marketplaces, the cliche of the "starving artist" may not stick around for much longer. The latest entry into this realm is
Derbywire, a startup that launched this month out of the NewMe Accelerator's Fall 2012 class. Derbywire is creating a mobile-focused marketplace that lets people post, sell, and buy all kinds of creative works directly from their smartphones.

There are some erroneous reports floating around that investment firm
Andreessen Horowitz is selling its stake in Facebook. Quite the contrary, it's holding on to all of its direct investment, and Wall Street shouldn't get spooked. What is happening is that A16Z is distributing to its limited partners the shares it got from when Facebook bought its portfolio company Instagram.

New Jersey doesn't exactly have a reputation as a startup hub, but that doesn't mean there aren't any ambitious tech entrepreneurs there. It could be that they just tend to migrate to more established locales like New York City and Philadelphia. In an effort to keep that talent within the state, New Jersey angel investor Mario Casabona and partner Travis Kahn organized the TechLaunch startup incubator at Montclair State University.

Zynga’s not the only one mixing around management these days. Pocket Gems, a mid-size mobile game developer backed by Sequoia Capital, is seeing some changes at the top today. Co-founder Daniel Terry is stepping down from the CEO role and becoming the company’s chief creative officer and executive chairman. Chief operating officer Ben Liu, who had already been running day-to-day operations at the company, moves into the CEO role. Terry said the company just posted its best quarter in terms of revenues and gross profit and added about 35 employees in the same time period for a total headcount of 140. “Things are growing well,” Terry said. “It’s time to take riskier bets in mobile entertainment.” The thing, though, is that the entire casual free-to-play gaming ecosystem is feeling the fallout of Zynga’s disastrous post-IPO performance. With marketing costs up from a year or two ago plus the lack of any overwhelmingly dominant leader on the charts, it would be hard to justify the same kind of valuation that any of these gaming companies might have commanded 12 to 18 months ago. That’s not to say these companies can’t be run as decent and consistently profitable businesses. It’s just that Zynga has taken some of the shine off the space. Pocket Gems was an early mover in mobile, casual gaming, with simulation farming and zoo games on iOS. They had two of the highest grossing games on iOS for all of last year, with Tap Zoo taking the No. 1 spot and Tap Pet Hotel reaching fourth place. But the environment quickly became crowded with Zynga’s own entrants like Dream Zoo. The company has managed in spite of that with newer hits like Tap Paradise Cove and Tap Campus Life that still retain placement among the highest 50 grossing iOS apps in the U.S. Thankfully, iOS’s entire footprint has grown enough to create a tide that lifts all boats in terms of revenue, even if it’s much harder to keep a top 5 grossing spot. As part of his new role, Terry will open an office in New York to explore creative partnerships with other companies. He didn’t offer too many specifics about what he’ll end up working on, though. “I can’t really talk much about it. Numerous competitors are excited about following us,” he said. Liu has already been in a de facto CEO-like role at Pocket Gems for some time. He’s an experienced gaming executive

Apple made a big deal about the iPad mini providing an uncompromised iPad experience for users, and it's standing by that by making it impossible for web developers to detect whether a web page is being read on an iPad or an iPad mini. Usually, devices provide a means with which developers can determine physical screen size, but the iPad mini looks exactly like the full-sized iPad to browsers.

When I first started at TechCrunch oh so many months ago, I asked the team "Why don't we have an iPhone app?" As an iPhone user, I find it handy to be able to read on the go the news from the publication that I work for. I was told the team was working on one. Other than being quite stoked that we had a team for this, I impatiently waited to get my hands on it. Today,
it's available on the App Store, and it's kinda gorgeous, and I'm not saying that because I work for TechCrunch. It could use some adjustments and tweaks in further versions, such as more customizations based on the type of news you actually like and want to read more of, but for its first version, it's pretty good.

Facebook has just confirmed with me that it is launching a retweet-style "Share" button for the mobile news feed. The much-requested feature is now rolled out for the mobile site, and will soon come to the iOS and Android apps. Like the web version, it lets people take links and photos posted by someone else or even a Sponsored Story ad and quickly repost it with optional commentary.

Earlier today, Corte Madera-based attorney Gary Oswald
filed a class action lawsuit against
Uber. The suit argues that the startup's operations in San Francisco are illegal, because Uber is allegedly "acting as a taxicab company while sometimes denying this fact in order to avoid all regulations governing taxicab companies." In response, Uber just sent out a brief statement from its attorney John Quinn, stating that it "complies with all laws and regulations applicable to its business" and that it's willing to defend itself in court. Here's the full statement:
