Startups Find Fertile Ground For Explosive Growth In Latin America
Nov 11, 9:00AM
Editor's note: Maria Rocio Paniagua currently works as a project manager at Innku, one of the top mobile and web workshops in Mexico. Mexico 15 years ago may not look very different from today if seen from the right angles. Most Mexicans used a single search engine (the now forgotten AltaVista); Windows was operating in most homes; and we were all excited for Nokia's latest release: a lighter, smaller phone.
An Entrepreneur's Guide To Patents: The Basics
Nov 11, 5:00AM
Editor's note: Brad Woodcox is a technical specialist focusing on startup development for Novak Druce + Quigg, an intellectual property super boutique law firm. Patents. A single word that incites a fervor in the online tech blogging realm, perhaps only behind the emotional responses with the iPhone vs. Android battle or TechCrunch using expletives in an article title.
Does Apple's HTC Agreement Indicate A Softening Of Its Approach To Patent Litigation?
Nov 11, 3:26AM
Apple and HTC today announced jointly a settlement of all ongoing patent litigation between the two, in a licensing agreement with a 10-year term, any further terms of which were not released. Many will be wondering if this is a sign that Apple's hard-line stance with regards to its IP and patent litigation may be experiencing a general softening, but it's much more complicated than that.
Apple And HTC Settle Remaining Lawsuits
Nov 11, 2:14AM
In a press statement released late tonight, smartphone titans Apple and HTC said they settled all outstanding legal disputes. The settlement includes a 10-year-license agreement between the two. This story is developing and we will have more to come.
Are Games Really That Persuasive?
Nov 11, 1:00AM
Beyond the levels, badges, reward points and promised engagement increases, there are many behaviourist game designers who see games as persuasive tools for social change. They see a very wide range of possible benefits from games, such as education, health and awareness of social or political issues and so they want to use games to persuade players. Do they really work though?
Spotify Is Having A Good 2012: Revenues Could Reach $500M As It Expands The Digital Music Market
Nov 10, 10:05PM
Spotify, the streaming music startup, was having serious trouble paying its bills, if you believed reports from earlier this year. Its 2011 financials showed a loss of nearly $60 million on revenues of $244 million. But this information is out of date, because the company has had a relatively strong 2012. It made $200 million in total revenue over the first six months of 2012, and is on an annual run-rate that could put it around $500 million by January, according to industry sources. Despite another net loss this year, Spotify's business model -- free streaming music with ads, or $10 a month for additional features and no ads -- is going in the right direction.
Watch: All The Videos From TechCrunch's Detroit Meetup [TCTV]
Nov 10, 10:00PM
We had an amazing time in Detroit this week, the second stop in our three-city tour for the TechCrunch Northern Meetups. We spent two very full days in the Motor City area talking with developers, entrepreneurs and investors from the heart of downtown Detroit to the college town of Ann Arbor.
RIM Plans To Woo Would-Be BlackBerry 10 Game Developers With Money And Hardware
Nov 10, 9:49PM
As work on BlackBerry 10 continues behind closed doors, Waterloo-based RIM is gearing up to make yet another attempt to woo would-be BlackBerry 10 developers to its cause. This time though the company has its eyes set on a specific kind of dev -- come November 16, RIM will offer up cold hard cash to game developers who create a game for (or port an existing game to) BlackBerry 10.
How Jaiku Made Prezi Focus On The US Market
Nov 10, 7:00PM
Editor's note: Peter Arvai, founder and CEO of Prezi, is working to help people share ideas. Just months before Twitter launched in 2006, a company launched in Helsinki, Finland -- the land of Nokia, ruler of mobile phones. The company's idea was simple: Make it easy to publish short messages via mobile phones. Ring a bell? For the Internet-savvy community in Northern Europe, it was Jaiku that kept people up to date and connected. I was one of Jaiku's happy users.
Gillmor Gang: LTE Edition
Nov 10, 6:00PM
The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Keith Teare, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor — this one was recorded on location in Orlando at the Gartner Symposium late last month. It's the bleeding edge of LTE production, with a limping sound board producing a 60-cycle hum now finally diagnosed as a failing power supply. But even with these dealbreakers buzzing like irritated bees around my head in the Florida sun, even with the latency and out-of-sync whatever, even still the magic of tapping into the network from an iPhone 5 and an aging Tricaster adds up to the dawn of something previously thought impossible. Check it out.
Crazy Like A Fox: Donate To Charity And Have Your Twitter Name Tattooed On Me
Nov 10, 5:03PM
So before you think, "Wow, Drew's a self-promoting jerk," which I'm really not, I want to tell you a story about a little girl named Alex Scott. Alex and her family hail from my home city of Philadelphia. As she turned 1, she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer. The doctors didn't think she'd made it. When she was four years old, she decided that she wanted to start a lemonade stand to raise money to destroy cancer and give money to doctors to "help other kids like they helped me." She did it with the hopes that she'd raise 1 million dollars. Sadly, Alex passed away when she was eight years old, but her family continued on with her mission. Alex's Lemonade Stand is a fantastic organization that raises money and builds awareness for all types of childhood cancer.
If, When, And How To Avoid Hiring A CEO
Nov 10, 4:00PM
Editor's note: This is Part I of a two-part guest post written by legendary Silicon Valley investor Vinod Khosla, the founder of Khosla Ventures. In Part II, he will examine the signs it might be time to hire a CEO. Though debated among some venture investors, in my view, it is always better for a founder to grow into being a CEO. When there's a choice, the founder's vision, culture, and approach are usually more important than "good management" alone. While I'll offer some insights for investors, this piece is primarily addressed to the founders themselves.
Where I Went Wrong, Second Annual Edition
Nov 10, 2:00PM
Happy anniversary to me: I've now been writing this here weekly column for exactly two years. Over the last year I have opined, prescribed, and predicted many things. And now, like last year, as part of my one-man crusade for greater opinion-journalism accountability, I'm going to take a moment to go back and look at what I got right … and where I went horribly, hilariously wrong. (cracks knuckles) OK, then: without further ado, and leaving out posts too recent to be judged or those that didn't contain forward-looking statements, let's see what I said over the last 52 weeks, and why… Eyes In The Skies I appear to be mildly obsessed with drones and unbiquitous surveillance technology everywhere, so every few months I write about their potential repercussions, the apparent inevitability of a transparent society, and the dire need to ensure that we're talking about one-way, rather than two-way, transparency. See, for instance:
Part Incubator, Workspace & Code School, Galvanize Wants To Turn Denver Into A Startup Hub; Uber, Forkly & More Already On Board
Nov 10, 7:45AM
It's not quite as cool as working next to other startups on a boat in international waters, but when it comes to appealing settings in which to build a business, the Rocky Mountains aren't half bad. Founded in Boulder in 2006, TechStars and other startup networks/accelerators like it have been on a mission to turn the Rockies -- and the cities that lie in their shadows -- into vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystems. At least in Colorado. The latest initiative is Galvanize, a 30,000-square-foot workspace for digital startups that recently opened in downtown Denver. While most of Colorado's entrepreneurial energy emanates from Boulder, the Galvanize founders are on a mission to bring Denver into the conversation by creating a shared workspace that will accommodate over 300 individuals and approximately 60 to 70 startups once it's fully operational.
The Problem With Measuring Digital Influence
Nov 10, 5:00AM
Editor's note: Michael Wu is the Principal Scientist of Analytics at Lithium. Social media is a required avenue for brands to engage their customers. However, social media engagement is primarily based on conversations and personalized interactions that are difficult to scale. Influencer marketing provides brands with the leverage to reach many by engaging only a few illusive influencers.
ToyTalk, The Company With The Futuristic Talking Bear, Raises $11.5M from Charles Rivers Ventures
Nov 10, 3:39AM
We told you about a cool, futuristic, talking bear a bit ago, and apparently we weren't the only ones blown away by it. Today, The Next Web reported that ToyTalk has raised $11.5M from Charles Rivers Ventures to bring this product, and more, to market.
Zazzle Partners with Dodocase To Offer An iPad Case That's Sturdy, Old-Fashioned — And Customizable
Nov 10, 12:30AM
Custom product company Zazzle just announced that it's teaming up with Dodocase, the manufacturer behind what we've described as "one of TechCrunch's favorite iPad cases." When I met with Zazzle's co-founder and Chief Product Officer Jeff Beaver a few months ago, he told me that one of the company's goals is to partner with local manufacturers. Zazzle is based in the Bay Area (Redwood City, to be precise), and it says that each case produced through this partnership will be "handcrafted in San Francisco." The company is offering Dodocase iPad cases in the style of hardcover books and iPhone 5 wallets. As with any other product offered on Zazzle, you can customize the cases with your own images and text.
Lawdingo Makes It Easy To Find And Instantly Consult A Lawyer Online
Nov 09, 10:53PM
Companies like LegalZoom try to replace the basic services offered by attorneys, but sometimes you still need to talk to a real, live lawyer. So a startup called Lawdingo makes it easier to find one. When you visit the Lawdingo site, you search the site based on your legal situation and your location. Then you get a list of applicable lawyers, along with their Yelp ratings (Lawdingo is also building a review system of its own) and their rates. You can schedule an appointment to talk to a lawyer directly from Lawdingo, either through video (using Tokbox) or voice chat (using Twilio). If they're online, you can even hit a "talk now" button.
China Blocks Virtually All Of Google's Web Services As 18th Party Congress Gets Underway
Nov 09, 9:30PM
According to multiple reports, China recently started blocking numerous Google services, including Gmail, Google Maps and others that usually pass through the country's so-called Great Firewall. Google's Transparency Report shows a significant drop in traffic from China that started around 12:30am GMT last night. According to a statement from Google, the company has checked and "there's nothing wrong on our end."
Zynga Announces Acquisition Of November Software To Build 'Mid-Core' Game Battlestone
Nov 09, 8:42PM
Zynga announced this morning that it has acquired game developer November Software for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition apparently occurred back in the spring, but Zynga is only announcing it now, in part so that it can drop a few hints about the game that the November team is working on. Back in September, the company had already signaled its intention to move into mid-core gaming (which has a smaller but potentially more lucrative audience) with the acquisition of A Bit Lucky.
