Gartner has this morning
published its numbers for how the mobile handset industry performed in Q3. The topline figure is that the mobile industry overall continues to see pressure from the wider economic downturn, and the gradual move away from cheaper, low end feature devices: overall sales of 428 million units for the quarter are 3% down on the same quarter last year. The Japanese tech industry continues to feel the squeeze in the economy, with one of the most painful effects being more mass layoffs of workers. Here's some good news for mobile app makers looking to enter the Chinese market. Not only are there a whopping 200 million Android and iOS devices in circulation in China, jailbreaking is down from last year. Umeng, the biggest Chinese mobile app analytics company, says it is detecting that only 42.4 percent of mainland iOS devices are jailbroken, down from 51 percent in the second quarter of 2011. Yes, that figure still sounds like an unbelievable share, but this is China. Umeng says jailbreaking is down because Apple started allowing consumers to
use local bank cards over the last year in the app store.

Tonight at the New York Tech Meetup,

OurList lets roommates set up subscriptions for household goods and split the cost easily. Users select the frequency and the share that each roommate should pay, and the service handles payments. After adding your roommates using Facebook Connect, you can shop for basic household goods without leaving the site -- over 60,000 products are available. Much like many subscription services, you set order frequency.

Tablets, with their larger touchscreens that are less cumbersome than laptops,
have been shown to lend themselves naturally to long-form content consumption, and that is spawning a new breed of services to fit the bill. One of those is Paris-based
LeKiosk, a digital periodical "stall" that has now closed a Series B round of investment totalling $7.1 million to grow its business across Europe.

Netflix is going to the movies with its new
Open Source Center on

Last week was a very busy one for those of us on the
Northern Meetups, TechCrunch's three-city tour through a few of North America's hottest (well,
not literally) burgeoning tech hubs outside of the typical San Francisco/Silicon Valley/New York bubble that we in the media are too often caught up in covering.

Libratone's speakers are normally crazy expensive. This one is just temporarily insane. Plus it's got a direct mode for when you're outside of Wi-Fi range, and a built-in battery, two things rare on an AirPlay speaker.

Fundraising phone calls from strangers make people hang up. But if the caller's a friend, friend of a friend, or is similar to you, you're more likely to donate.
Amicus has just raised $3.2 million to offer this social graph intelligence to non-profits. Y Combinator, FF Angel, 500 Startups and more have put money down because they think fundraisers will put money down on Amicus to get donors to...put more money down.

Editor's note: U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, represents California's 16th Congressional District, which includes parts of Silicon Valley and San Jose in Santa Clara County. It was nearly a year ago that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX). Millions would raise their voices to successfully oppose this legislation, which was viewed as one of the greatest threats to a free and open Internet ever to come before Congress. But the defeat of SOPA should be more than cause for pride -- it must also prompt action to secure the future of the Internet.

t to
become Facebook's VP of Corporate Finance & Business Planning. He'll bring along what he's learned from Zynga's cratered share price. He'll report to Facebook CFO David Ebersman who was previously at Genentech whose stock sailed much smoother seas before it was acquired.

Zynga today fought back against a slew of high-level departures
it has suffered in recent months by announcing a slate of new appointments to C-level and executive roles. In all of these new appointments, Zynga is promoting from within rather than bringing in executives from the outside -- perhaps in a big to truly stabilize the company after several rough months in terms of financial performance and stock market reception.
