Samsung-Expands-the-GALAXY-S-III-Range-with_3Gartner has this morning published its numbers for how the mobile handset industry performed in Q3. The topline figure is that the mobile industry overall continues to see pressure from the wider economic downturn, and the gradual move away from cheaper, low end feature devices: overall sales of 428 million units for the quarter are 3% down on the same quarter last year. But smartphones continue to outshine that by quite a lot: they are up by 47% to 169 milion units. In other words, smartphones accounted for about 40% of al mobile device sales in Q3.

In the latest development, Panasonic Corp. says that it will reduce its workforce by 10,000 employees by the end of this fiscal year, which completes in March 2013. The company had already warned that it will post losses of $10 billion for the full year, because of writeoffs in its mobile, solar panel and lithium batter businesses.

Not only are there a whopping 200 million Android and iOS devices in circulation in China, jailbreaking is down from last year. Umeng, the biggest Chinese mobile app analytics company, says it is detecting that only 42.4 percent of mainland iOS devices are jailbroken, down from 51 percent in the second quarter of 2011. Yes, that figure still sounds like an unbelievable share, but this is China. Umeng says jailbreaking is down because Apple started allowing consumers to use local bank cards over the last year in the app store.

Hendrickx has served as an advisor to Miradore since June 2011 and will also now join the board.
