Airbnb: Our Guests Stay Longer And Spend More Than Hotel Guests, Contributing $56M To The San Francisco Economy

Nov 09, 8:01AM

airbnb-logoOver the past few years, there's been some question about what effect peer-to-peer lodging marketplace Airbnb has on the hotel and tourism industry. Now the company has some research to show that it's not having a negative effect, and in fact is actually contributing more to the tourism trade in San Francisco -- especially to neighborhoods that aren't usually visited by the typical tourist here.

Is There Much Of A Market For A Universal Translator?

Nov 09, 7:55AM

Microsoft has an impressive new universal translator demonstration - Chief Research Officer Rick Rashid shows a real time translation of English (voice) to Chinese (voice, via text), with the interesting twist that the translated language is spoken in his own voice. Rashid writes about it here, and there's a video. More here. This is a product that just naturally resonates with people. We've all seen Star Trek's universal translator, and translating devices are common in science fiction. It's a cool feeling to imagine speaking with someone who doesn't share your language.

You Can't Put A Price Tag On A TechCrunch Post

Nov 09, 7:11AM

Screen Shot 2012-11-08 at 11.05.59 PMWe're reporters, so we hear a lot of bullshit. Lately we've been hearing that it costs $750 to get a post on TechCrunch, which we initially thought meant that one of our writers was receiving direct compensation for posts. This is what happened the last time we heard something like this. However, when we tracked the rumor through a game of tech PR telephone, we discovered that a PR firm called PRServe had been charging startups $750 to get a post on an "A-level blog" like TechCrunch and around $400 to get on lesser blogs, or, as the industry refers to it, "placement."

Plan Your Next Trip With Desti, A Conversational iPad App Spun Out From Siri-Creator SRI

Nov 09, 5:04AM

desti screenshotThere's no shortage of travel guides and services on the web, but in some ways, that can be a curse — travel-planning can become a long process of browsing site after site and reading review after review. That's where a startup called Desti comes in. The company emerged last year from SRI International, the research institute where Siri was developed before it spun out into an independent company and then was eventually acquired by Apple. Like Siri (as well as other SRI projects, including banking-focused Lola) Desti is designed to function as a virtual personal assistant — in this case, an assistant focused on travel.

Tim Draper-Backed CapRally Wants To Be A Free Salesforce, Mint.com Hybrid For Fundraising

Nov 09, 4:23AM

cr_logo_bigXpert Financial set out with big dreams. Founded back in 2009, the company wanted to become an alternative trading system and marketplace that would allow pre-IPO, private companies to find funding and sell shares. Basically, it was hoping to become a new SecondMarket, with the benefit from early, perhaps tacit approval from the SEC. However, thanks in part to Facebook's lackluster public offering, interest in the platform waned. So, Xpert Financial founder Thomas Foley has pushed on to a new enterprise that again focuses on the relationship between companies investors -- with a different spin. CapRally, which launched in public beta this week, is a freemium platform that allows companies, investors and investment bankers to more easily manage their capital raising opportunities, whether that be in companies, real estate or financing films.

Founder Institute Quietly Expands Into The Middle East, With Focus On Supporting Female Entrepreneurs

Nov 09, 2:38AM

fi-logo-1Talk to 500 Startups' Dave McClure about what's important for his seed fund and accelerator going forward and, it's not just about finding and supporting whiz-bang entrepreneurs, it's supporting entrepreneurial and ecosystem growth outside of the U.S. Many of the top accelerators in the U.S. have been working to expand their programs and networks at home and abroad before the accelerator bubble bursts. Adeo Ressi and Founder Institute are of the same mindset and, in many ways, they have a head start on the international front. In December of last year, Founder Institute already claimed to be the largest accelerator (in terms of graduates), with over 20 percent (100+) hailing from overseas.

Twilio & Parse Launch Cloud Module To Bring Scalable Back-End Support, Telephony Services To Mobile Developers

Nov 09, 1:20AM

twilio-logo-6a141664f35a78e9ac08eed627c2a859Twilio was founded four years ago with the goal of creating a scalable API that would provide developers with an easy way to add SMS and calling tools to their applications. The company has grown quickly over the last two years and is now servicing 40 countries and has signed on over 250K developers. Its international development took another step forward last month, when it broke into Japan with an exclusive deal with KDDI telecom, which is now selling Twilio's cloud communications APIs to developers -- which followed on the heels of a deal signed with AT&T in October.

Reddit CEO Asks Users To Buy Revamped Membership Because Ads Are "One Of The Reasons Digg Failed"

Nov 09, 1:05AM

Reddit Gold"We could theoretically load up our pages with ads and probably make enough to cover our costs. However, that would significantly degrade the experience of using the site," said Reddit CEO Yishan Wong in a post asking users to "Invest in Gold" -- the site's newly enhanced subscription program. If people pay for ad-free Reddit and new Gold features like filter saving the site won't end up like Digg.

Behind The Scenes: How Apple Keeps Grey Marketeers From Buying Out iPhone Stock In Shenzhen

Nov 08, 11:53PM

8153479529_771ea5f090_oGetting an iPhone in China has always been hard. For most of its life-cycle, the phone has been unavailable in the Mainland except through the grey market. Now that Apple is allowed to sell units in Shenzhen, however, it's gotten amazingly strict on sales per-person.

Google Taps Its Inner J.J. Abrams With The Niantic Project

Nov 08, 11:28PM

niantic_project_logoWe have no idea what this is about either, but Google is apparently running some kind of viral marketing campaign right now that involves something called the Niantic Project. The videos and puzzles on the campaign's website looks like they come right out of a J.J. Abrams project, but it's not clear what this whole affair is actually about.

Groupon Testing A Deal Search Feature In Chicago And New York

Nov 08, 11:12PM

groupon screenshotDuring today's analyst conference call for Groupon's third-quarter earnings, CEO Andrew Mason mentioned a new feature that's being tested in a couple of cities. Now, if you look at the deal listings in New York and Chicago, you'll see a box allowing you to search for specific types of deals, i.e. "pizza" or "lunch." Adding site search capabilities might not seem like a huge step forward, but Mason said it's another way that Groupon can expand beyond its email newsletter. That's important, he said, because it allows Groupon to sell more deals — as he noted, "You can only put so many deals in an email." The company has already been trying to move beyond email with services like Groupon Now, but one of the most important channels for this "pull" approach (as opposed to pushing emails to subscribers) is the Groupon website itself.

See Everything You've Ever Shared With Someone On Facebook's Redesigned Friendship Pages

Nov 08, 10:34PM

Screen Shot 2012-11-08 at 2.40.25 PMFacebook has a little-known feature called Friendship Pages that shows all the wall posts, updates, and photos you're tagged in with someone. Today it's getting a redesign, and Facebook  is launching the facebook.com/us quick link for couples to see their Friendship Pages. The previous design was stuck on the ugly, old profile format, but now they look like a shared Timeline.

Catching Up With Exponential Labs, The Startup Behind Long-Tail Search Site 'MillionShort'

Nov 08, 10:26PM

Screen Shot 2012-11-08 at 5.10.22 PMPeople like to say that web search is a problem that has long been solved. But earlier this year, a small startup out of Toronto called Exponential Labs attracted some big attention with "MillionShort," a clever hack called that let you bypass the top million (or 1000, or 10,000) Google search results to help surface long-tail content that has not yet risen to the top within traditional search engine algorithms.

AT&T Expands FaceTime Support To Those With Tiered Data Plans & LTE-Capable Devices

Nov 08, 9:19PM

facetimeLast month, open Internet advocacy groups threatened to file complaint against AT&T with the Federal Communications Commission due to AT&T's decision to limit the use of Apple's FaceTime video calling application. AT&T said that users wouldn't be able to use FaceTime over its cellular network, unless they were also on the carrier's Mobile Share Plans. Well, good news, folks: AT&T has decided to expand FaceTime access.

Friendster Founder Jonathan Abrams Raises $1.7M To Start Hiring At Social News Reader Nuzzel

Nov 08, 9:03PM

Nuzzel-logo-darkSocial news startup Nuzzel has raised more than $1.7 million in seed funding. I say "startup," but at this point the only person working full-time on the project is Jonathan Abrams, who previously founded or co-founded Friendster, HotLinks, Socializr, and the Founders Den. With the new funding, Abrams is ready to start hiring — you can browse the list of available positions here. As a Nuzzel user, the one that I'm most excited to see is "iOS engineer," which confirms that Abrams plans to launch iPhone and iPad apps.
