Hands-On With B&N's 7″ Nook HD, 9″ Nook HD+: The Fire HD Better Watch Its Back
Sep 26, 5:00AM
B&N is making some big strides in the land of digital, and though these new tablets aren't the most gorgeous slates I've ever seen, they do have what it takes to be contenders against the Fire HD, if reading is your first priority with a tablet. Barnes & Noble, the world's largest seller of physical books, is yet again trailing in the footsteps of Amazon with High-Def iterations of their tablet, the Nook. In case you missed it, Amazon just recently launched the Fire HD, in both 7-inch and 8.9-inch flavors. Yes, this announcement is very familiar, but that's not to say it doesn't have value. So let's get started.
Senator Rockefeller Warns Google, Microsoft And Yahoo: Dodgy Movers Are Using SEO To Game Your Systems
Sep 26, 4:00AM
John D. Rockefeller, the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, late on Tuesday sent letters to Google, Microsoft and Yahoo alerting them to how their search engines are being gamed through search engine optimization tactics as part of a wider scam involving moving services, which has seen affected consumers lose personal possessions and pay thousands of dollars above quoted prices to dodgy moving companies that promote one service but deliver another.

Sep 26, 2:34AM
Sony is expected to approve a plan to invest around $642 million (50 billion yen) in Olympus. As the Japanese manufacturer of cameras, optics and reprography products is currently facing a trial for having hidden investment losses for the past 20 years, it has been looking for a potential investor for months. By injecting that capital investment, Sony will become the largest shareholder.
AngelHack Goes International For Its Next Hackathon
Sep 26, 1:25AM
The last time I talked up AngelHack, I was impressed that the hackathon had spread to two coasts. Looks like that wasn't enough for founder and CEO Greg Gopman — the fall version of the event has now grown to include five international cities, including Tel Aviv, London, Santiago, Paris, and Toronto. It is, Gopman says, the largest hackathon in the world, with 2,500 attendees.
Scott McNealy: The World Lacks A Major Corporate Sponsor For Open Source
Sep 26, 1:13AM
I sat down with Scott McNealy today after he spoke on a panel here at TUCON, the Tibco annual conference here in Las Vegas. McNealy covers a lot of topics. He discussed his new startup WayIn that provides a corporate social media experience. He jokingly says Larry (Ellison) never calls, referring to Oracle, which acquired Sun Microsystems, the company he co-founded.

Buckle Up, California: Governor Jerry Brown Signs State Law Permitting Self-Driving Cars
Sep 26, 12:05AM
For people who live and work around Silicon Valley, sightings of self-driving cars have become pretty common -- especially on the roads and highways near the Mountain View, California headquarters of Google, which has been championing the technology. And it looks like such sightings could become more common throughout the state of California in the months to come.Today, the office of California Governor Jerry Brown announced that he has signed into law a bill "that allows driverless cars to be operated on public roads for testing purposes."
Google Maps Goes Diving, Provides "Seaview" Of Great Barrier Reef, Hawaii and Philippines
Sep 25, 11:52PM
Thanks to a partnership with The Catlin Seaview Survey, Google Maps now displays Street View-ish images of the Great Barrier Reef and popular underwater spots around Hawaii and the Philippines. Clear your calendar. Forward your emails. It's time for an undersea adventure. As Google explained in a blog post today (now pulled) you can now use Google Maps to swim with a turtle, follow a manta ray or lose yourself watching the sun set over a reef. You can go diving in Maui's Molokini crater or join snorkelers in Oahu's Hanauma Bay. And of course all this is possible without swim lessons or sunscreen thanks to the magic of Google Maps.

AirPR Nabs $1M From 500 Startups, Matt Mullenweg To Help Startups Find Better PR
Sep 25, 10:59PM
We in the media have a love-hate relationship with public relations firms and their professionals, with that relationship tending to skew heavily to the latter. Companies pour countless hours of blood, sweat and tears into building products and viable businesses, and when they're ready to tell those unique stories, they turn to PR. But as it stands right now, companies struggle to find the right PR match, and for the high cost, they don't get enough value in return. And this goes both ways.
Following Big Mobile Redesign, StumbleUpon Brings New Pinterest-Like Look To The Web
Sep 25, 9:37PM
Veteran content discovery platform StumbleUpon has had a rough go of it over the last six months. In order to keep pace with sexy, young newcomers like Pinterest, StumbleUpon pushed a major redesign at the end of last year, introducing a new user experience and recommendation algorithms, as well as brand channels and a "Stumble" button, which took users to random (personalized) articles based on topic. Users didn't love the new rendition, and last week, the 10-year-old company released another big redesign -- this time bringing a bold new look to its iOS apps.

Better SDKs = Wall Street Shutting The Fuck Up: Facebook's Mobile Platform Monetization Equation
Sep 25, 8:45PM
Facebook has just released the Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS which lets app developers on its platform to take advantage of single sign-on through native login and other features from the social network getting baked into iOS 6. The new SDK lets app developers prep their Facebook mobile apps for iPhone 5's screen size, native sharing "sheets", ready-to-use UI elements, and a new ad analytics beta. Native login is big because it lets third-party apps avoid having to ask for a user's Facebook email and password.

Swiss Researchers Build A Flying Robot That Can Right Itself When It Crashes
Sep 25, 8:39PM
Just as man-hacks can repair their trajectories as they whiz towards Gordon Freeman's head, these little robots from the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems can now pick themselves back up when they crash. This little feature solves a problem that has long been the bane of flying robotics hobbyists everywhere as they watched their AR Drones and other bots fling themselves to pieces against walls and plant life.
Mobile Will Grab TV Advertising's Crown
Sep 25, 8:07PM
Editor's note: Matt Cohler is a General Partner at Benchmark Capital. He's responsible for identifying investment opportunities in Internet-related companies in addition to working closely with companies across the firm's portfolio. You can follow him on Twitter here. The global advertising market is big. Half a trillion dollars big in 2012. In the tech world we tend to think of the Internet when somebody mentions advertising. But even now the Internet isn't the biggest advertising market in the world. The biggest advertising market in the world is television.
Scuff, Rattle And Scratch: Apple's iPhone 5 QA Leaves A Lot To Be Desired
Sep 25, 7:54PM
This morning, Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller reportedly told a user that the iPhone 5's aluminum back obviously makes it more prone to scratches. That's all fine and dandy, but that's only a small part of #ScratchGate. The real problem Apple seems to be having is with its quality assurance programs over at Foxconn. Now that more pre-ordered phones are arriving, it's becoming pretty clear that despite Apple's assurances that every phone is being built with nanometer precision, something is off with this first batch of iPhone 5s. How do I know? I just got one.
TechCrunch's YouTube Channel Hits 10 Million Video Views
Sep 25, 7:44PM
OK, so we're not at Gangnam Style or Call Me Maybe viewing levels. Those videos have more than 274 million and 269 million views, respectively, on YouTube. But today, TechCrunch's YouTube channel passed its own milestone: 10 million views. Michael Arrington wrote the first post on TechCrunch on June 11th, 2005. Less than two months later, obviously recognizing that video was going to be important, he had signed up for a YouTube channel.
