Chasing Shazam, SoundHound Quietly Passes 100M Users, Averaging 200K Downloads/Day
Sep 21, 4:47AM
With Shazam infiltrating our TVs, showing up in Super Bowl ads, and passing 200 million users, you just might think that the market has its music-identification king. But SoundHound would beg to differ. Just three days after Shazam's announcement, the music search and discovery app has responded by quietly releasing some numbers of its own. No official announcement, no hubbub, just a press release. Today, SoundHound announced that it has passed the 100 million users milestone -- and this, according to Vice President of SoundHound Katie McMahon, tallies the number of people who have actually used the app, not just those who downloaded it. What's more impressive is this: In January 2010, when it "rebranded," the app had 2 million users. Today, it has over 100 million and is averaging over 200,000 downloads per day on Android and iOS devices. Apparently, we never have any idea what song is playing. Ever.
In Line For The iPhone 5: As The Craze Of The Day Settles Down, Neighbors Share Line Experiences
Sep 21, 3:15AM
When talking with other people in the line for the iPhone 5, most of them have been doing Apple launches for a long time and are used to living in these conditions. As I'm experiencing it for the first time, I am the one asking many questions. Yet, my neighbors tell those old stories about previous iPad and iPhone launches with passion, starry-eyed.
Space-Time Insight: Analyzing Data From Sensors, Power Grids and Weather Feeds
Sep 21, 2:59AM
Earlier this week, Space-Time Insight raised $14 million to further develop its geospatial and visual analytics software. EnerTech Capital, Novus Energy Partners, and ClearSky Power & Technology Fund, join existing investors, Opus Capital Ventures and Start Up Farms International (SUFI), in this round of financing.
YouTube Testing Feature To Quiz You While You're Watching A Video
Sep 21, 1:30AM
YouTube videos may soon be getting a little more interactive. There's now a page on the YouTube website describing a feature called "Video Questions Editor Beta," which was spotted by the Dutch tech site WebSonic.nl. The page itself is pretty bare-bones, but it describes the feature as a way for "multiple questions to be displayed on top of your video during playback that a viewer can answer." So video producers can add an interactive element to their content — imagine adding little quizzes to an educational video, or introducing product questions to an video ad.
ESPN Goes Realtime, Turns Its Content Firehose Into A Streaming Reader
Sep 20, 11:48PM
Oh, it's on. Over the last year or so, ESPN has been experimenting with better ways to present and distribute its content on the Web and on mobile. Essentially, they realized (or at least I hope they did) that their user experience on their digital properties wasn't great and that others were sneaking up on and passing them -- their dominance in TV notwithstanding. Yesterday, they launched a new product in beta called SportsCenter Feed that offers sports fans a new way to consume ESPN's content.
Clawing At Referral Traffic, Twitter Pecks At You To Chirp Tweets To Facebook
Sep 20, 11:32PM
Twitter may be slowly closing the window for how some third parties can use its river of tweets, but Twitter is also cherry-picking others that might prove useful for its own traffic. And it's using a pretty prominent call-out box to do it. This evening, I noticed on the homepage of my Twitter account, in the place where you would normally see your profile and Tweet window, a new box. "Send Tweets to Facebook," said the call-out. "Share your Tweets with your friends on Facebook." A button takes you to your profile page to enable that to happen.
Former 'MunchOnMe' Team Launches Caviar, A Curated 'Seamless'
Sep 20, 11:06PM
The team behind the ridiculously named food daily deals site MunchOnMe is on to the next one, launching a new startup, Caviar after Munch On Me's acquisition. Caviar is Seamless "done right" i.e. a platform that allows users to order food "seamlessly" via web. As of today, users in SF can sign up for access to the Caviar beta, which differentiates itself from Seamless by only offering orders from restaurants that don't typically deliver. With its focus on curation, Caviar limits its inventory to restaurants that have four stars or higher on Yelp. "[With] Seamless, you don't really need to use them to get the food. You can call the restaurant yourself and they'll take the order over the phone and deliver it to you," says founder Jason Wang, on why Caviar is a net value add in an already crowded space.
IFTTT Has Actually Been In Violation of Twitter's API For Months, Today's Move Unrelated To 1.1
Sep 20, 10:12PM
So today, IFTTT sent out an email to users letting them know that they'd be dropping support for certain services due to Twitter's API restrictions. That's a correct statement, but the timing is very odd.
Looxcie's Newest Wearable Camera Finally Makes The Leap To HD
Sep 20, 10:12PM
For reasons I've never been able to discern, some people really seem to get a kick out of sharing every bit of banal minutia that peppers their daily lives. Should you happen to fall into that category (and if so, why?), you may be glad to know that the folks at Looxcie have just announced the Looxcie HD, a new addition to its long-running series of super-portable wearable video cameras.
Facebook Lets Businesses Plug In CRM Email Addresses To Target Customers With Hyper-Relevant Ads
Sep 20, 10:05PM
No one got just how powerful it was that Facebook recently said it would allow ad targeting to lists of email addresses. Today it became clear as Facebook ad chief David Fischer formally launched "Custom Audience" ads and how they tie into CRM at the Dreamforce conference. I'm convinced they're going to be hugely profitable for advertisers and Facebook.
In Line For The iPhone 5: #OccupyApple Is Occupying The Line To Sell Their Spots
Sep 20, 9:56PM
As Jordan told you earlier, I am standing in the line for the iPhone 5. Unexpected buyers showed up as well. Occupy Wall Street demonstrators planned a strategy to hijack the event. They are currently standing in line and plan to sell their spots tomorrow morning to rich business people.
Exec Changes At Etsy: Adam Freed Steps Down From COO Role
Sep 20, 9:39PM
Adam Freed, who was appointed chief operating officer at Etsy just over a year ago in August 2011, has stepped down from the COO role at the online crafts marketplace. News of the change first came to us through sources familiar with the company, who indicated that Freed would be departing Etsy altogether. However, when reached via email, an Etsy representative confirmed that while Freed will indeed no longer serve as COO, he will remain a member of Etsy's leadership team as "an advisor to Chad [Dickerson, Etsy's CEO]."
Sorry Folks, Kiss Your Animated Twitter Avatars Goodbye
Sep 20, 9:33PM
I've never been a fan of animated avatars on any service, let alone Twitter. I am an avid user of the web client, and I cannot stand seeing things flash before my eyes along with 140 characters, but maybe I'm just a jerk. Twitter apparently didn't like them either, and according to BuzzFeed, you can no longer use an animated GIF as an avatar on the service. RIP, weird flashing things.
Apple: iOS 6 Maps Is A First Attempt, We're "Just Getting Started"
Sep 20, 9:31PM
Apple has finally broken silence on the customer reaction to Maps in iOS 6, which spawned Tumblrs, fake twitter accounts and generally a lot of mockery and confusion. The statement, provided to AllThingsD from Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller, essentially says this is a first try, and Apple knows there's lots to do to make it better.
Congress Must Allow More STEM Visas Today
Sep 20, 9:07PM
Editor's note: Michael Beckerman is President and CEO of The Internet Association, a new policy lobby representing Google, Amazon, and Facebook, among many web-based technology companies. This piece, in support of the STEM Jobs Act currently being considered by Congress, is their first public policy statement. Highly skilled and talented people are a powerful source of new innovation and job creation, and Internet companies across America know first- hand that immigrants create jobs, build companies, invent new products and services and push the U.S. economy forward in a critically important way.
IFTTT To Remove Twitter Triggers Due To API Constraints, Your Recipes Are Baked
Sep 20, 8:58PM
Here's an email that IFTTT sent out today to users, and it's not good news for Twitter fans.
Source: Google Hopes To Have iOS Maps App In The App Store "Before Christmas"
Sep 20, 8:56PM
It turns out it's really hard to map the world. Along with their iOS 6 update, many amateur digital cartophiles were in for a rude awakening: Apple Maps, which looked so cool in Apple's launch demo, are actually, and hilariously, a POS (Yes, I was wrong).

Facebook Points Brands To 12 Top B2Bs Awarded "Strategic" Preferred Marketing Developer Distinction
Sep 20, 8:49PM
Today Facebook awarded the 12 best social marketing tool and service providers with a new "Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer" distinction. The exclusive sPMD list will help brands sort through the 300 B2Bs in Facebook's PMD directory and find trusted Facebook Page and Ads optimization providers. Facebook's VP of Biz and Marketing Partnerships David Fischer announced the sPMD today at the Dreamforce conference run by Salesforce, which is part of the sPMD club. Each member gets a seat on the sPMD council, early access to Facebook products, and extra support from Facebook's teams, making it a lucrative distinction.
In Line For The iPhone 5: Where Have All The Fanbois Gone?
Sep 20, 8:35PM
Today I dropped off TC writer Romain Dillet at Apple's 5th Ave flagship store in New York City, where he'll be waiting in line for the iPhone 5. He'll be bringing you updates from the front lines all day, and through the night, until doors open tomorrow at 8am Eastern. But as I helped him get set up, I noticed something interesting. Everyone in line — about two or three dozen of them at this point — was wearing a branded T-shirt. And no, I don't mean Gucci, American Eagle, or Nike. I mean tech brands, like Vibe, Gazelle, and Otterbox. Aside from Romain, the only other folks in line are either buying the phone for their employer (and being paid to do so) or part of the Occupy Apple (or, more recognizably, Occupy Wall Street) movement. My question, then, is where have all the fanboys gone?
