A New $150M Fund Underscores The Bigger Ambitions of Kushner's Thrive Capital
Sep 07, 5:12AM
Joshua Kushner's Thrive Capital just became yet another of several upstart venture firms that have been able to raise progressively larger funds this year. The New York-based fund just quickly closed an oversubscribed $150 million fund in ten weeks, on the back of a $40 million raise last fall. The normally media-shy Kushner is coy about strategy specifics except to say that Thrive is geography and stage-agnostic (meaning they'll do anything from a seed round to a much later-stage deal, like when they went in on Instagram at a $500 million valuation days before the Facebook acquisition was announced).
Best Email Ever: How One Soldier Stationed In Afghanistan Got His Amazon News Today
Sep 07, 4:56AM
It's only my third official day on the job at TechCrunch, but it's been a pretty awesome time thus far. We saw an email come through the wires that stopped us in our tracks during our Amazon coverage today. It was technology-related...but not. We have some great readers at TechCrunch, but this particular reader has an interesting story. He's not in Silicon Valley, he's in Afghanistan, protecting the United States of America. That's pretty brave and makes you wonder about all of the things you complain about on a daily basis, as in, are they really all that bad?
TechCrunch's Picks: The Top 5 Companies From StartX's Summer 2012 Demo Day
Sep 07, 3:39AM
18 companies presented at the StartX summer demo day today. The summer 2012 class is StartX's seventh and largest class; the accelerator, started in 2010, has now had over 90 companies in its history, about 85 percent of which have received funding. If you're unfamiliar with StartX, it's a non-profit startup accelerator and a part of Stanford Student Enterprises, a student-run, independent organization at the school. StartX companies own their intellectual property and StartX does not take equity in the companies. In order to apply to StartX, at least one co-founder, who owns significant equity, needs to have enrolled at Stanford within the last three academic quarters.

The Last Big Independent Social Marketer Syncapse Pimps Itself For Acquisition With Analytics Suite
Sep 07, 2:06AM
Syncapse wants to get bought. All it's well funded competitors -- Buddy Media, Vitrue, Involver, Wildfire -- already have. So today it releases a new analytics suite, making it a more appealing turn-key social marketing solution to acquirers by rounding out its Faceb00k ads and Pages offering. The company's PR keeps pitching it to blogs as "the largest independent social media management player remaining", seemingly in hopes of securing it and its investors who've plopped down $28.3 million in funding a multi-hundred million purchase like its compatriots got.
The First Third-Party Games Go Live On Zynga.com
Sep 07, 1:38AM
Zynga first announced its Zynga Platform for social games back in March. Since then, Zynga's own games have gone live at Zynga.com, and the company has been revealing more details and partners. What seems to have been missing until now, however, were actual games, built by companies other than Zynga and live on the platform,. So today, at a press event highlighting Zynga's partners, the company said the first third-party games have launched at Zynga.com — four games, specifically.

This evening at the StartX demo day, the Stanford-based incubator provided a few metrics as a validation of its model. Among other things, StartX announced companies that have gone through its program have raised a total of $80 million. With about $1.3 million raised per startup, it's ahead of most for-profit incubators. In fact, it claims to be Number 2 in the incubator space, behind Y Combinator. Quirky Lands $68M From Andreessen, Kleiner To Build An Online Community For Inventors
Sep 07, 12:00AM
Much like it is for entrepreneurs, being an inventor isn't easy. From the moment that magic light bulb appears, product developers have to navigate a bumpy road of financing, engineering, legalities, patents and more. As a result, many great ideas never see the light of day. Quirky is on a mission to help the Idea Men and Women of the world bring their ideas to life. In fact, the startup aims to bring two consumer products to market each week, along with building an online community and a communication network around inventors. Back in August, the three-year-old product development network raised $16 million in Series B and today is adding more coin to its coffers with a sizable $68 million series C round, led by Andreessen Horowitz. Kleiner Perkins is also a "significant participant" in the round and is joined by previous investors Norwest Venture Partners and RRE Ventures. The round brings Quirky's total funding to $97 million.
Welcome To The Game: Amazon's Working With Activision On In-App Offers
Sep 06, 11:51PM
During today's Amazon Kindle Extravaganza, one of the slides that was popped up during the event got the attention of quite a few of us. It was a slide showing an in-app offer on a Kindle device. It's an interesting play for Amazon, as it grows itself beyond just an "e-reader".
Rumored: Development To Cease For Twitter's Mac Client
Sep 06, 11:32PM
Here's a piece of Twitter news that would really make me sad. According to former TechCrunch full-time writer guy, MG Siegler, Twitter will cease to support and develop Twitter for Mac.
Giftly's New App Lets You Send Any Gift To Friends, Family Straight From Your iPhone
Sep 06, 10:59PM
Giftly, a San Francisco-based startup that lets you send any kind of gift to a friend or family member, has just come out with a native mobile app that makes it easier to send presents on the go. It's the company's first native mobile app after having a mobile web-based presence for awhile. What's unique about Giftly is that you can send any kind of gift without having to go through a merchant. There aren't limitations on what kinds of presents you can send, unlike competitors like Karma (which was recently acquired by Facebook and has a limited catalogue of items to choose from). You enter the app and can pick from a suggested selection of items from beer to a meal to a day in Paris. Or you can invent your own gifts. Then you can select a couple of places like restaurants, bars or stores to redeem the gift at and then the monetary value of the gift. Then you send it to a friend.
The Logitech Ultrathin iPad Keyboard Case Is Now Available In White
Sep 06, 10:56PM
When it comes to finding a good iPad keyboard case, two accessories come out of the pack, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard and the Belkin YourType Folio. The Logitech one was the clear winner in Matt Burns' review battle and it now comes in white. If this accessory needed another argument to convince you, the color might be what you were waited for. For white iPad owners, the white keyboard case is a nice addition to match it with your device.

Sep 06, 10:42PM

BillShrink originally launched as a cost-cutting engine for consumers. The startup helps users save money across verticals including cell phones, credit cards, cable bills and savings accounts. The startup pivoted into the personalized offers and loyalty rewards space, renaming itself Truaxis (but still retaining the cost-cutting consumer focused service). Truaxis allows merchants to target offers to pre-selected consumer profiles.

Amazon Announces First Kindle Fire Tablets Outside Of The U.S., Starting At £129 In UK, €159 In France
Sep 06, 9:18PM
Along with Amazon's big tablet announcements earlier today, it's finally also unveiled the first markets to get the Kindle Fire tablets -- both the new Kindle Fire and the HD version -- outside of the U.S. The news first trickled out in a forum announcement on Amazon.co.uk, which also announced availability of the new Kindle e-reader. This is announcement is more significant than Amazon finally answering questions of when it would launch these tablets internationally. It's a sign that it is getting ready to turn the taps on full and really start getting some global scale to their device operation. The Kindle readers have already been a big hit in markets where they have launched, and so launching the tablets, at competitive price points, will be Amazon's first crack at truly upsetting the global balance for the tablet market, which has basically been dominated by Apple and the iPad, with very little headway from any single Android-based tablet vendor. Until, possibly, now.
Amazon's Writing Is On The Wall For Physical Books
Sep 06, 8:34PM
