Overcome These 6 Challenges When Selling To Startups

Sep 22, 5:00AM

SteliEftiEditor's note: Steli Efti is the Co-Founder and Chief Hustler of ElasticSales and an advisor to several startups and entrepreneurs. You can follow Steli on Twitter here. It is common entrepreneurial wisdom that good ideas often come from trying to solve your own problems. It's no surprise then that many startups are building solutions to do just that, and therefore need to sell their products to other startups.

No One Who Looks Like This Works, Or Has Worked, At TechCrunch

Sep 22, 4:34AM

Screen shot 2012-09-21 at 10.30.41 AMNot saying that it won't happen, or that it can't happen, just that it hasn't happened yet, so if a young looking blond TechCruncher in a pushup bra friends you on Facebook, beware. "TechCrunch employee" Rani Girard is apparently going around friending guys in the tech community for well, reasons. Her jig was up when she/he/it tried to forge a Facebook connection with Wired writer Ryan Tate, who immediately brought it to our attention. Also, I'm pretty sure "she" isn't real.

Want More Networking Lunches? LetsLunch Launches In The UK, Adds Sponsored Lunchers

Sep 22, 1:19AM

letslunch logoLetsLunch continues to spread its vision of professional networking through lunches -- it just launched in the United Kingdom. Tied to its UK launch, the startup says it's also releasing version 3.0 of the service. Now, I usually spend my lunches frantically cramming down food while writing posts or doing briefings, but if yours are a little less hectic, you might want to use LetsLunch to get some networking mileage out of those lunch breaks. (And I'm sure some of you think that's a terrifying idea, but hey, it's not for everyone.)

Motorola Mobility (Google) Pokes Fun At Apple's iOS 6 Maps With #iLost Hashtag

Sep 22, 12:39AM

229408158_40f957a1ec_zOk, I'm not a fan of Maps in iOS 6 as you might have read. Seems like the folks over at Google aren't either. By way of Motorola Mobility's Google+ page (the company that is now owned by Google) a post just popped up with a fun hashtag.

Hamburg's Data Commissioner Doesn't Want To Let Facebook Off The Hook On Facial Recognition

Sep 22, 12:24AM

Facebook GermanyEarlier today European regulators collectively scored a victory for privacy when the Irish Data Protection Commissioner revealed it had managed to get Facebook to drop all facial recognition activity on its platform, as part of a wider investigation and process to get Facebook more in line with EU regulations on data protection and consumer transparency -- most of which Facebook appears to have passed successfully. So: done and done? Not quite.

CaterCow Takes The Trouble Out Of Ordering Food For Groups In NYC

Sep 21, 10:12PM

catercowI'm a fan of maintaining as a direct a route between my stomach and food as I can, but that's the sort of proposition that gets dicier when multiple people are involved. As it happens, multi-person catering crises is exactly the problem that Airbnb veterans Chris Collins and Carly Chamberlain have decided to tackle with their latest startup, CaterCow. "Catering is broken in three ways," co-founder Collins said shortly after taking the stage at ERA's third Demo Day.

Sleep Tight, Sweet Romain. You've Earned It.

Sep 21, 9:05PM

romain-1-2Poor Romain. Being TechCrunch's only remaining intern, we had him brave the New York City night and blog from the iPhone 5 line. He did it like a champ. And now he's sleeping. In his Aol cubicle. He's a grown man — a 22-year old Frenchman who's braved multiple big cities on his very own — but I couldn't help but worry about him the whole time. But lo and behold, here he is, sleeping like a baby. And we're glad to see it.

Facebook Starts Letting You View And Delete Your Facebook Search History

Sep 21, 8:10PM

Facebook Delete Search HistoryEven though search history on search engines like Google is totally private, some people still enjoy the ability to delete it. Now Facebook is following suit, allowing you to view and delete all or part of your search history through the profile Activity Log. The new feature will give you more transparency into what you do on Facebook, what it tracks, and make you feel like you're more in control. The feature begins rolling out today and will reach everyone over the next several weeks. The change could signal that Facebook wants to get deeper into web search, and is prepping for a release by adding new controls.

Sep 21, 7:58PM

iOS 5 vs. iOS 6 AdoptionWe reported earlier that iOS 6 first day adoption was high, but new information provided to TechCrunch by mobile analytics company Apsalar shows that over time, users are picking it up much faster than previous versions. The company sees a lower overall adoption rate on day one than either Chartboost or Chitika, but the numbers show a rapid increase in user adoption over time.

Tapstream's Review Bar Helps Mobile App Developers Get Feedback From The Web

Sep 21, 7:39PM

tapstream reviewbarNeed more positive reviews for your smartphone app? Well, you can always interrupt your users by inserting one of those annoying review requests when they're inside the app itself, but analytics startup Tapstream is offering a different approach — the Review Bar, a "Rate this app!" prompt that sits at the top of your website.

Hands-On With Real Racing 3 And Clumsy Ninja On iPhone 5: Watch Out Game Consoles

Sep 21, 7:33PM

real_racing3_screen1Apple's iPhone 5 hit store shelves and consumer hands today, and I got a chance to score some hands-on time with a couple of the games that were announced at the event where Apple's smartphone was announced. EA's Real Racing 3 and Natural Motion's Clumsy Ninja. Neither game is available yet, but both are very playable in their current forms, and excellent examples of what Apple's hardware updates make possible for gaming.

Welcome To TechCrunch's Words-Driven Friday

Sep 21, 7:30PM

For the rest of today, every story you read in TechCrunch's main news river will contain words. This is an experiment, and it's probably less of a risk than it might look. Words have always been central to TechCrunch's approach. In fact, a huge number of our stories on any given day already include original words. Our word people call sources, check facts, and get words said to them for a large proportion of our stories.

Some Early iPhone 5 Adopters Report Odd Screen Issues

Sep 21, 6:58PM

iphone5This is quickly becoming somewhat of a routine event after Apple's latest iPhone goes on sale: a number of early adopters are having issues with the screens on their new phones. When the iPhone 4 first launched two years ago, quite a few users got devices that had odd yellow spots in some areas, for example. This time around, the issues are a bit more mysterious.

AJAX Web Apps In iOS 6 Are Sort Of Broken

Sep 21, 6:33PM

safari-ios6-loadingI noticed some odd behavior in mobile Safari on iOS 6, and while I thought it to be just a minor quibble on my part, it turns out that it's actually something of a notable bug, now affecting web developers targeting the platform. The problem I noticed is that little, spinning loading indicator (or whatever you call it) at the top of mobile Safari which tells you when a site has finished loading all its parts. On some websites, that little guy just runs and runs, never completing, as if there's still more to load. Kind of annoying, right? Well, apparently, it's not just a little annoying to picky users like me - it's annoying developers too. It's related to a bug which impacts how websites function, and is causing some web apps to not work properly.

The Best Apps Optimized And Ready For Your New iPhone 5: Evernote, Tweetbot, Tiny Tower And More

Here's a list of great apps that have already been updated to take advantage of more screen real estate, useful either for iOS first-timers or those coming back to the platform yet again.

More Outrage For Uber Than Immigrants: Tech Policy Is Still Local

Sep 21, 5:46PM

bieber2When Washington D.C. threatened to raise the price of an Uber cab by a few dollars, the online community staged a full-fledged panic attack. Yet it barely whispered a peep of discontent when Congress introduced a bill to alleviate the high-skilled immigrant crunch for tech companies. Yesterday's defeat of the STEM Jobs Act, which would have added 55,000 visas for foreign-born science grads from American universities, illustrates an important lesson for those who think that netizens vote as a bloc for innovation issues: tech policy, like all policy, is local.
