What it's like using travel startup Journy
Aug 27, 7:18PM
You may remember that time I decided to do whatever startup Journy told me to do during my trip to Berlin with my mom. Well, I mostly stuck to that plan and we had a really good time. Here’s a quick recap. Journy is designed to function somewhere in between a high-end travel service and a DIY approach to jetsetting. For $25 a day, Journy will act as your personal concierge for your… Read More
9 reasons social media stalking feels SO right
Aug 27, 6:00PM
Turns out, observing other people’s lives is actually a biological instinct. And in the age of social media, where lives are presented on a platter and require only the slip of a thumb, it’s easy to indulge in those instincts. In fact, sometimes, we let our impulses run wild in the most unproductive ways. But why the fascination? Whether we social media stalk out of adoration… Read More
Celebrating Jack Kirby, the King of Comics, at 100
Aug 27, 5:30PM
“Smashing thru,” the caption reads, “Captain America came face to face with Hitler … ” The 10-cent book appeared on store shelves a full year before Pearl Harbor officially woke the sleeping giant and forced America to enter World War II. He wasn’t the first superhero (that matter is indeed, the subject of much debate), though he would help usher in a new… Read More
BittBoy is a retro pocket console that does a lot for very little
Aug 27, 5:18PM
The GameBoy Pocket remains one of the best-designed pieces of mobile gaming kit ever in my opinion, which is why I was intrigued by the BittBoy, a new third-party portable console that clearly owes a lot of inspiration to the GameBoy. The tiny handheld packs a library of “300” games built-in, controls that will feel familiar to any Nintendo fan, a battery you can recharge via… Read More
The negative instinct
Aug 27, 5:02PM
I’ve seen, of late, a tendency for young, intelligent men (and sometimes women, although this is primarily a male phenomenon) to fight back against the inequity of the startup ecosystem by joining political movements that are far right of Libertarianism. This tendency, one borne out of helplessness and frustration, is also defined by a certain mindset: that the world owes them success. To… Read More
Sami Inkinen on his bold plan to cure type 2 diabetes forever
Aug 27, 4:31PM
It’s a bold claim. Most treatment plans offer to help those with the disease manage it, not get rid of it. But Inkinen, with zero medical background, believes he’s found a way to wholly eradicate diabetes for good. The secret is as simple as a low-carb diet. It seems pretty obvious — cut out the sugar and bad carbs and your diabetes will get better. But that’s easier… Read More

Seven things I have learned about writing software
Aug 27, 1:00PM
It’s happening. Bit by bit, little by little, I’m morphing from an engineer into some kind of…manager. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I still write code every day; but I find myself spending more and more time in analysis and discussion, in meetings and calls, making higher-level decisions, trying to organize teams, and worrying about strategy rather than tactics. Of course… Read More

Aug 27, 11:30AM
Being a clean-tech startup amidst today’s uncertain political priorities and tightening R&D budgets is like being on a rollercoaster where the loops keep getting bigger and bigger and have no end in sight. But surprisingly, this hasn’t stopped many clean energy startups bursting with outside-of-the-box ideas and innovations waiting to be taken to market. However, with a 50%… Read More

Aug 27, 4:31AM
Keep your dogs close but your kitties closer, is I think the expression. Maybe. Whatever it is, pets are important to people. Petcube Bites is one of those cameras, but it’s also a treat… Read More

That’s because Google is testing a new option that lets users permanently mute a website within the Chrome Browser. Noisy websites have long been a pain. Chrome introduced an indicator to flag guilty tabs a couple of years ago — it had… Read More
