4 Ways Dell Is Becoming An Open Source Company
Jul 20, 12:50AM
Is Dell becoming an open source company? Yes, but it is not exactly being planned that way. It is bubbling up like most open source projects do. But in many respects the move to open source is also by design. Dell does not want to be a box maker anymore. That makes open source a desirable option. With open source, Dell can leverage an ecosystem of partners and developers.
Pinterest Has Been Locking Accounts In Response To Hacks, May Not Know The Cause Of Security Breach
Jul 20, 12:38AM
Pinterest has been temporarily locking accounts in response to hacks. It looks like the company doesn't know the cause of the security breaches. On July 16, Pinterest posted a "Locked Account Survey," asking affected users to complete a survey to "assist our investigation." The eleven question survey is broad, covering a wide range of possible issues, from whether the user had experienced other security hacks to how they used Pinterest to what browser they used, suggesting that Pinterest doesn't know what's causing its hacks.
Facebook Begins Testing Sponsored Results, Its First Search Typeahead Ads
Jul 19, 11:25PM
Heads up, Google. Facebook is testing a new format of search ads called Sponsored Results that lets advertisers show ads in the search typeahead to users looking for a particular Page, app, or Place. It basically will let businesses divert traffic from each other. For example, a competing game company could target Zynga's CityVille so anyone searching for "CityVille" would see an ad leading to their game alongside the organic search result leading to Zynga's game. The Sponsored Results will look just like organic results except for being marked with a tiny word "Sponsored". Facebook tells me they'll be sold on a cost per click basis, can be targeted to people searching for any Page, app, Place, (and possibly event) without that business' permission, and the tests begin tonight.
How's Skype Doing At MSFT? Usage Jumps 50%, Users Logged 115B Minutes Of Calls Last Quarter
Jul 19, 10:40PM
In May of last year, Microsoft acquired everybody's favorite VoIP and chat provider, Skype, for a cool $8.5 billion. It was a big move for Microsoft and a landmark deal, which it officially closed in October. Yet, as Frederic pointed out earlier this week, other than getting to wear the brand's pin on its lapel, Microsoft has been quiet about its plans for Skype. However, as part of its quarterly earnings announcement this afternoon, we got a glimpse into just how well Skype has been performing since it joined MSFT's ranks. One notable milestone to come out of those stats? Users logged 115 billion minutes of calls on Skype over the quarter -- a number that was up 50 percent over the prior quarter.
Fab CEO Jason Goldberg On Fab's Global Ambitions, M&A Strategy, And 30-Year Growth Plan
Jul 19, 10:34PM
It's been a big 24 hours for Fab.com. The design-oriented e-commerce site just closed on $105 million in new funding at a reported $600 million valuation -- a funding round that has been several months in the making. It's news that CEO and founder Jason Goldberg likes to joke has given him "105 million new reasons to smile" today. But as Goldberg has noted himself, it's a serious time too: Big money brings big responsibility. So we were pleased to have Goldberg give us a call via Skype from Fab's New York City headquarters to talk all about the new raise and what it means for Fab's strategy. You can watch our full interview in the video embedded above, and below are a few of his key points.
Google's Nikesh Arora On Mobile Ads: It's 'Where Search Was In 1999′
Jul 19, 10:04PM
One of the themes that came up repeatedly during the conference call for Google's second quarter earnings was mobile advertising. Analysts asked a number of questions that, collectively, seemed to be gauging what the shift to mobile means for Google's advertising business. Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora (pictured) offered some numbers at the beginning of the call, saying that Google now has 1 million mobile advertisers running ads in 300,000 mobile apps. When asked specifically about mobile cost-per-click rates, Arora didn't get too specific, but he said they're "healthy."
Marissa Mayer's Yahoo Salary: $1 Million Base, Up To $60 Million In Stock And Bonuses
Jul 19, 9:53PM
Yahoo today filed regulatory documents with the SEC disclosing how much it will pay its newly appointed CEO Marissa Mayer. There are some big numbers here -- multi-millions -- but overall it seems to be in line with the industry standards. Yahoo has submitted its entire offer letter dated July 16th, 2012 in the SEC filing, but here are the relevant bits minus the legalese:
Google Investor Relations Gets A Google+ Page
Jul 19, 9:27PM
Investors and analysts have a new way to get updates from Google — a Google+ page for investor relations. The company's executives mentioned the page during the company's earnings call this afternoon, saying that it launched about an hour ago. There's not much on the page right now, aside from a couple of images, a link to the earnings webcast, and (be still my heart) some legal boilerplate warning about forward-looking statements.
Google's Larry Page Might Have Lost His Voice, But He's Still Running The Company
Jul 19, 9:23PM
So the news on Google's Larry Page is that there's no new news. That's what Nikesh Arora said on today's Google's earnings call. Just to recap: Last month, Google announced that Larry Page was skipping the company's annual shareholder meeting because he had lost his voice at some point over the previous weeks. But whatever ailment caused that loss of voice over the last few weeks continue to ails him, as Page left the call to lieutenants Patrick Pichette, Nikesh Arora, and Susan Wojcicki.
Zynga Appoints Founding Yahoo Exec Ellen Siminoff to Board of Directors
Jul 19, 9:00PM
Ellen Siminoff, President, and CEO of Shmoop University, an educational publishing company, and a founding executive at Yahoo, joined Zynga's board of directors today. Siminoff joins DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, LinkedIn Founder and Chairman Reid Hoffman, Sidecar Rideshare CEO Sunil Paul, Kleiner Perkins Partner Bing Gordon, LinkedIn board member Stanley J. Meresman, Zynga EVP of Business Owen Van Natta, Zynga COO John Schappert and Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus on the gaming giant's board. Siminoff's background and comments about extending Zynga's platform could signal a push towards the intersection of online education and gaming. But the board does have a very diverse set of backgrounds, and we've speculated about board members changing Zynga's direction before, so take it with a grain of salt.
YouTube Has Found Its Business Model, And Is Paying Out Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars To Partners
Jul 19, 8:58PM
Google SVP and chief business officer Nikesh Arora touted growth at YouTube on the company's earnings call today, saying that the company had finally found a business model for the giant video site. Without giving firm numbers, Arora said the site had come a long way since 2007, when some of us in the press questioned YouTube's ability to monetize what was then a largely user-generated content site. "We found our model," he said. "YouTube unites the world through video," Arora continued. He noted several recent milestones to support that claim, including the site's participation in this year's Summer Olympics. YouTube will be the live streaming platform for NBC Universal in the U.S., and it will also be providing video coverage of the events for more than 60 other countries around the world.

Microsoft Posts $492M Q4 2012 Loss Because Of $6.19B aQuantive Writedown, $18.06B Revenue
Jul 19, 8:05PM
Microsoft just released its Q4 2012 earnings report, posting just $192M in operating income before taxes and its first ever loss ($492M) due to the writedown the company took because of its failed aQuantive acquisition. Revenue for this quarter was $18.06, up from $17.41 billion in the last quarter and $17.37 billion in Q4 2011. Loss per share - and this is the first time Microsoft reported a negative EPS in its history - was $0.06. Analysts previously expected Microsoft to post around $18.13 billion in revenue and earnings per share were expected to be around $0.62 on earnings of around $5.3 billion. These numbers don't reflect the aQuantive writedown, however. In the year-ago quarter, Microsoft reported a profit of $5.9 billion and $4.5 billion in Q4 2010.

Rosetta Stone Brings Live Video Chat Tutorials To Mobile Language Learners With New App
Jul 19, 7:00PM
It wasn't all that long ago that Rosetta Stone released its free iPad app. We liked it, and felt like it was a great way to bring Rosetta Stone's now-famous ease-of-use to a mobile education-friendly device like the iPad. But not all of the features available on Rosetta Stone desktop made the migration to iOS, until today. The company has released a brand new application to the App Store that will allow for video tutorials to be performed on the go, direct from the iPad. The app is called TotalE Studio HD and is meant to be used in conjunction with Rosetta Stone's current iPad app.
"In the Studio," Greylock's Josh Elman is Looking for Social Products with the Power to Incept
Jul 19, 7:00PM
"In the Studio" this week features someone who has taken on early product roles at many of the web's definition social networking companies in the Valley, honing his craft for the last decade before packing his bags for the journey to Sand Hill Road, where he and his colleagues invest in the types of companies he's helped build. Now an investor with Greylock Partners, Josh Elman's LinkedIn profile reads like the resume of the times. Somehow, Elman had the touch to work on early product at companies like Zazzle and Real Networks before making the jump to LinkedIn, followed Facebook, and eventually Twitter. Through these experiences, Elman has amassed a rare level of expertise in the initial growth phases of social product companies and now, as an investor, is looking for the next generation of foundational social companies.
