Google Puts Nail In The Coffin For Static Analytics, Real Time Now The Only Option

Jul 18, 2:02AM

rightnow-socialIn a move that struck fear in the hearts of under-educated web editors everywhere, Google announced today that it will remove the old version of Google Analytics tomorrow. After releasing a new version focused on real time analytics in September, Google has kept a link to the old version, which it has supported, at the bottom of the Analytics page for the past year. What can you expect from Google Analytics if you haven't transitioned yet? Never fear, straggler. We've got you covered with a link and media bonanza.

Google Search Gets New Interactive Weather Widget On iOS And Android Tablets

Jul 18, 1:50AM

google_weather_newHere is a small but nifty update to Google's search interface on tablets (both iOS and Android): just search for [weather] and a new tablet-optimized weather widget will show you the current weather at your location (or anywhere else if you add a city's name or ZIP code to your search), as well as hourly and ten-day forecasts for temperature, precipitation, humidity and wind speed. Google officially confirmed this update on Google+ earlier today. The new widget looks like the developers took their design cues from Android's new Google Now feature. Earlier this year, Google launched a similar widget for iPhone and Android phones as well, but its design is significantly different and the feature set is limited to a three- or five-day forecast depending on the size and orientation of your screen. Just like the new tablet widget, though, the phone interface is also interactive.

VMware CEO Paul Maritz Named EMC's Chief Strategist – Next Job CEO?

Jul 18, 1:19AM

icon-vmwareAs expected, EMC shuffled the deck today. It named COO Pat Gelsinger as the new VMware CEO, replacing Paul Maritz who has moved into a new role as EMC's chief strategist. Yesterday I reported that Maritz was out as VMware's CEO and was being considered as a replacement for EMC CEO Joe Tucci, who is expected to retire by the end of next year. We also reported Maritz is a candidate to lead Cloud Foundry, the successful open-source platform as a service (PaaS) that has the potential to become a core part of EMC's core cloud offering.  It has been reported that Cloud Foundry will be spun out as a subsidiary of EMC. VMware is a subsidiary of EMC.

Will AT&T Charge For 3G FaceTime? CEO Randall Stephenson Says It's 'Too Early' To Know

Jul 18, 12:09AM

randall stephensonAT&T CEO Randall Stephenson took the stage this afternoon at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, where he was asked about a recent report in 9toMac that AT&T might charge customers extra if they want to use FaceTime over 3G cellular networks (a feature that was announced for iOS 6). The company previously offered a generic "we'll share more information with our customers as it becomes available" statement with 9to5Mac. Stephenson didn't go too much further, but he certainly didn't rule the charge out.

Sunny Clouds: Intel Data Center Rev Up 15%, Beating Other Categories In Otherwise Lackluster Earnings

Jul 18, 12:03AM

Server roomA shining light appeared in Intel's otherwise mediocre second quarter earnings results today. Data center revenues were up 15.1%, beating all other categories. The news reflects the changing IT landscape. Companies are looking to get more out of their data centers in an effort to optimize what they already have. Servers are getting abstracted so technology vendors are looking to differentiate. That comes in the form of better efficiencies that Intel can offer.

Here Are Our Favorite Companies From The Fourth 500 Startups Demo Day

Jul 18, 12:01AM

dave mcclureToday in Mountain View, Calif., 500 Startups unveiled the latest class of companies to participate in its Accelerator program. This batch had startups addressing an incredibly wide variety of spaces -- from kids' computer games, to necktie shopping, to tktk, and beyond. Founding partner Dave McClure said during today's program that with this batch of companies, 500 Startups aimed for one unifying thread: "Hopefully, these pitches make sense and solve problems that matter," he said, whether those problems affect consumers, parents, or small business owners. All the pitches were compelling, but we picked out seven that seemed especially interesting. Here are our favorites from the class of 27 startups.

Yahoo Sheds A Little Light On Its Mobile Activities In Q2: Revenues Up 50% (But From A 'Small Base')

Jul 17, 11:54PM

yahoo axis screenshotsIn Yahoo's earnings call, CFO Tim Morse did not diverge much from his prepared script based on numbers from Q2. And when asked about when new CEO Marissa Mayer might be making her first appearance before analysts and investors, he simply replied, "I don't know." But he did take a question near the end that shed a little light on where it is standing today with mobile. He noted that mobile revenues at Yahoo are up by 50 percent on last year -- although he also noted that this was from a "small base."

Jul 17, 11:07PM

Screen shot 2012-07-17 at 3.58.36 PMIn the midst of today's news whirl, this tidbit slipped through the cracks; Part of the design team Cuban Council has apparently been acq-hired by Google, according to a note on their blog. Google has also confirmed the mini-acquisition in an email to TechCrunch. "We're very excited to share that some folks on our team will be joining Google to focus on design aspects of Google+," reads the Cuban Council blog, titled "A New Voyage," "Having worked closely with a variety of Google product teams since 2005, we're thrilled to have the opportunity to focus our creative efforts within the organization."

Square, Google Wallet Have Mobile-Challenged PayPal Shaking In Its Boots: Enter card.io

Jul 17, 10:21PM

m6PayPal announced today that it has acquired card.io, its partner company that allows developers to use a smartphone to capture credit information. In the mobile payments space that is becoming increasingly crowded with major players like Square and Google Wallet and minor upstarts like Venmo, PayPal has acquired its first company in over a year. While last year's moves were aimed at mobile payments, this acquisition points toward bolstering PayPal's digital wallet--the area where Square, Google Wallet and others have boldly entered before PayPal.

PayPal Acquires Mobile Payments Startup Card.io

Jul 17, 10:03PM

cardio-logoPayPal just announced that it has acquired card.io, a company that allows developers to capture credit card information by using a smartphone's built-in camera. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. As we reported earlier this year, PayPal's PayPal Here feature is already being powered by card.io's service, so the two companies already had a close relationship before this acquisition. According to card.io, the company's SDKs will continue to remain available for developers.

Yahoo Realized It Might Actually Have An Interesting Earnings Call, So It Put A Stop To That Right Away

Jul 17, 10:03PM

marissa mayerWell, that was pretty thrilling. Today we learned that Yahoo's sale of Alibaba is still on track. Meanwhile, its search alliance with Microsoft continues to underperform. Oh, and CFO Tim Morse is pretty excited about the Olympics! Wait, is that not what you wanted to hear about? In that case, the earnings call was probably a snoozefest. To be fair, with a few exceptions (like Apple), these calls tend to be pretty focused on the numbers. Even when the famously brash Carol Bartz was CEO, her earnings comments usually stuck closely to bland talking points. And Yahoo PR warned us that new CEO Marissa Mayer wouldn't be joining the call. If she had joined, it's her first day on the job, so she probably wouldn't have been able to offer anything said.

Hands-On With Organic Transit's Pedal-Solar Electric Hybrid Vehicle, "The Elf"

Jul 17, 9:34PM

ELFmodelOur week in the Southeast gave us plenty of memorable moments, but perhaps my favorite of the entire trip was when I stumbled upon the Elf — a pedal-solar electric hybrid vehicle from Organic Transit in Durham, NC. It's one of those products that — given the right financing and marketing — could be completely disruptive in Urban areas. The vehicles come in two models currently, The Elf which can hold up to 150lbs, and the TruckIt, which can handle an 800lb payload. Both have solar charged batteries that can last for 30 miles before switching to pedaling mode, and they have turn signals, brake lights and front head lights. They even have side mirrors. I stole away Rob Cotter, CEO at Organic Transit, to tell us a little more about what I like to call "sunbikes."

FYI: Marissa Mayer Won't Be On Yahoo's Q2 Earnings Call Today

Jul 17, 8:45PM

marissamayerShe's the new CEO of Yahoo as of today, but a PR from Yahoo has just told me that Marissa Mayer won't be on the Q2 earnings call, which is due to start in about 20 minutes. The call will not be led by Ross Levinsohn, either. It will be Tim Morse, the CFO, leading today's proceedings. Noting that it was only her first day on the job, he said that he would be taking listeners through Yahoo's results, including an update on Alibaba. "[Mayer] is very mindful of the investor community and I'm sure you'll be hearing from her very soon," he said.

Intel's earnings per share were flat, rising 1 cent over last quarter.

Checkmark Brings Better Geofenced Reminders To iPhone, Mac Version In The Works

Jul 17, 8:19PM

checkmarkCheckmark is yet another one of those buzzy iPhone apps which people were talking about, blogging about and raving about, even before it officially launched. And today, it launched. It's hard to resist taking a look at it, when even weeks before its debut, people were saying this is the "reminders app Apple should have made." Wow, is it really that good?

Report: Chrome For iOS Now Owns 1.5% Of iOS Browser Market

Jul 17, 8:12PM

Chrome-logo-2011-03-16At its I/O developer conference last month, Google launched Chrome for iOS. Despite the fact that it's being held back by Apple's security protocols and can't use its own rendering engine, Chrome has been among the most popular free downloads in Apple's App Store since then. According to the latest data from online advertising network Chitika, Chrome for iOS currently has a market share of about 1.5% on its network. Safari, of course, continues to have a virtual monopoly on iOS browsing, but according to Chitika, Chrome continues to see moderate growth on Apple's mobile platform.
