LinkedIn Is Gearing Up For A Redesign: Bigger Pictures, Anchored Menu (And A Life Less Tweeted)

Jul 11, 1:48AM

Untitled-9LinkedIn these days may be the social network that is used most by those looking for a new job (and not the place to read tweets), but the company has long wanted to be seen as the place for a whole lot more, and we're now getting a glimpse of how it plans to put that into action. LinkedIn has been quietly rolling out a new version of its homepage to some of its 160 million+ users -- the first major update in years -- with a layout that will put a lot more emphasis on building out relationships, make better use of socially curated news content -- and, if things go according to plan, should make the site a lot more sticky. We've had three different people contact us about the new-look LinkedIn, and a spokesperson for the company has also confirmed as much:

Predictive Game Studio PrePlay Raises $3.1M Series A From Gary Vaynerchuck And Others

Jul 11, 12:31AM

Screen Shot 2012-07-10 at 5.05.08 PMPrePlay, a New York-based predictive sports game startup, has raised $3.1 million in Series A funding. The company says it will use the funding to expand its staff and develop new apps for baseball and "other entertainment related content." The funding round was led by social media entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, RSE Ventures' CEO Matt Higgins, and other angel investors, who's names have not yet been released. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Users compete in social games on PrePlay to predict the outcomes of live TV shows. The company, formed in April 2010, currently has two titles: PrePlay Football and Molson Canadian NHL PrePlay, which was licensed by the NHL and (obviously) sponsored by Molson. As founder and CEO Andrew Daines said, the games are based on " the most interesting question in the world--what's going to happen next."

Zendesk Now Offers Facebook Private Messages For Customer Service

Jul 10, 11:27PM

pigeonZendesk has a new feature for customers to send private Facebook messages that automatically go to agents as Zendesk customer service tickets. Customers get the same experience that comes with sending messages on Facebook.  As with any private message, only the recipient and the sender see the information passed between the two.

Meraki Plans To Conquer Enterprise Wi-Fi, Hire Like Crazy With $40M In New Funding

Jul 10, 9:54PM

logo-miles-color-450x450An all-hands meeting at wireless network provider Meraki just closed with a bang: it's raised $40 million and is now looking for a 100,000 square foot office according to my sources. The financing comes mostly from existing investors that likely include Sequoia and Northgate. Much of the $40 million is debt with the principal to be repaid within five years. Details on exact investors are still coming together because Meraki hoped to keep the round quiet as not to rile up competitors. Meraki will use the funds to keep a cash cushion, pay for its new headquarters, and aggressively hire in sales so it can break away from competitors like Aerohive and Cisco. If all goes well, I hear an IPO is on the horizon.

Zombie SOPA? Congressman Introduces Pieces Of Defeated Bill, With Support From Former Opponent Issa

Jul 10, 8:15PM

zombiesIt's alive! Hollywood darling U.S. Representative Lamar Smith is attempting to reanimate portions of the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) bit by bit. The Intellectual Property Attaché Act, slipped in for consideration over the weekend, revives one of the sneaker portions of SOPA to create a global intellectual property task force, charged with aggressively promoting anti-piracy law around the world. But the problem, as TechDirt's Mike Masnick points out, is that the proposed task force seems biased towards the very overreaching anti-piracy principals that were the basis of SOPA. In other words, Congress and local governments have a habit of sidestepping important policy debates with backdoor laws that force through a particular point of view before there's general public consensus on the issue. (Representative Darrell Issa, an early opponent of SOPA, is supporting an amended version of the bill, and we've included his full, exclusive statement at the end of this post)

Telltale Galaxy Note Documents Spotted On T-Mobile's Website Ahead Of Launch

Jul 10, 7:29PM

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-007Well, if you needed any more proof that the Galaxy Note will soon make an appearance on T-Mobile's store shelves, take a gander at this. TmoNews has discovered that a slew of Galaxy Note related documents can be found by searching for -- what else? -- "Galaxy Note" on T-Mobile's website. Sadly, there's no word yet on whether or not that rumored July 11 release date is still in the cards.

New Twitter Apps Are Here: Push Notifications From Your Favorite Tweeters, Better Expanded Tweets, More

Jul 10, 7:24PM

Blog-headerTwitter is adding more features for iOS and Android today, allowing users to receive push notifications from tweeters they select, giving users the ability to expand tweets on their phone, improving search results and supposedly providing a better user experience for events. The major upgrade is push notifications. While users could previously receive updates by SMS, they can now adjust their settings to receive push notifications whenever their favorite users tweet or re-tweet. The expanded Tweets, previously only available in web browsers, allows users to see more media right beneath the Tweet

Pinterestification! Sociable Labs Signs Up Wine.com, 19 Others For Its Pinterest-Like EverShare Offering

Jul 10, 7:22PM

pinterest_275wideThe Pinterest effect on e-commerce sites continues: online wine retailer Wine.com, a company with $67 million in annual revenue, is adding a social shopping component to its website which not only looks like Pinterest, but is also powered by Facebook. Wine.com says it's using technology provided by Sociable Labs, a San Francisco-based startup which introduced its licensable "EverShare" product suite earlier this year. But while Wine.com's change is a notable one for them, the bigger story here is the traction that Sociable Labs is seeing, thanks to the "Pinterestification" (not a real word!) of e-commerce.

Kleiner Perkins Discrimination Case Presses On, Publicly: Next Court Date Set For July 20

Jul 10, 7:15PM

JudgeKahnThe gender discrimination case brought against legendary Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins by one of its female partners, Ellen Pao, will continue to play out in the public arena -- at least for the next week, and likely for much longer. Judge Harold Kahn ruled in San Francisco Superior Court today that Kleiner Perkins' motion to force the case out of the court and into a more private arbitration process will be revisited on July 20, after supplemental papers have been filed.

Neat Launches NeatCloud And NeatMobile, Two New Document Storage Services

Jul 10, 7:09PM

Screen Shot 2012-07-10 at 3.07.10 PMI've had a love affair with Neat scanners for a while now and the company has just updated their roster with two new cloud offerings, the aptly-named NeatCloud and a mobile scanning system called NeatMobile. For those not in the know, Neat is essentially a scanner for receipts, documents, and business cards. It's surprisingly fast and efficient and has allowed me, personally, to reduce my paper load considerably. NeatCloud is a fairly simple concept. It's basically a cloud backup service for Neat documents. The service is a lot like Evernote in that it allows you to save documents via email and grab information on the fly.

OpenFeint's Jason Citron Raises $1.1M To Go After Core Gamers With New Startup Phoenix Guild

Jul 10, 7:00PM

jason-citron-openfeint-founderJust a year after selling his mobile-social gaming network OpenFeint to GREE for $104 million, Jason Citron is at it again. He's starting a new company called Phoenix Guild and has pocketed $1.1 million from YouWeb, Accel Partners, and General Catalyst Partners. The goal is to be the "Blizzard of the post-PC era." After months of playing video games and traveling, he decided to have another go at it. "I knew that I wanted to do another gaming company," he said. "So I took a nice, deep breath and did it. I love making games." He added, "I'm a core gamer and it's just weird to me that I didn't find much on my iPad to play. Early on, it became apparent that there was a lot of action in free-to-play Farmville-style games. So there are still a lot of fairly low fidelity titles. We want something that's more like what you would see on consoles and PCs but re-imagined and built with modern monetization mechanics."

But as I've mentioned the app to various friends and such, I've learned that Android has been missing out. But no more. Songza's core feature — Concierge — is now available within the Android version of the app. The update is now live, so if you're interested in checking it out, go ahead and download the update.

Playcraft Labs Launches HTML5 Dev Tools, Aiming At Games And Beyond

Jul 10, 6:36PM

playcraft-logoHTML5 game engine Playcraft Labs officially launched today. The engine had been in a soft, beta launch since May. Founder and CEO Martin Wells, who started his first game company when he was 16, describes Playcraft as a toolbox for game designers, especially ones who want to accelerate how fast they develop a game. Wells came up with the idea when he was looking to design web games and couldn't find many professional-grade HTML5 tools. In November, he set about designing what eventually became Playcraft. "Like any good engineer I set about building my own stuff," he tells us.

Dropbox Revamps Pro Storage Plans, Doubles The Amount Of Space At No Extra Cost

Jul 10, 5:45PM

dropboxConsidering the sheer amount of data people produce every day, there's really no such thing as having too much storage space. Users of cloud storage service Dropbox seem to agree, which is why the company revealed that it would be significantly bumping up the amount of storage space available to its paying users at no extra cost. According to Dropbox's official blog, the company will be replacing their 50 and 100 GB tiers with 100 and 200GB tiers for free.

In other words, she has some impressive credentials, and it seems like a pretty big vote of confidence that she's willing to join an Say.

TechCrunch Disrupt Hearts Argentinian, Brazilian & Israeli Startups – Pavilions FTW!

Jul 10, 4:59PM

Pavilion LoveOur hair-brained idea to pilot a Brazilian Pavilion at the upcoming TechCrunch Disrupt has taken a life of its own! We expected 10 startups to show interest. Boy did we underestimate... There are now — wait for it — 76 Brazilian startups that have signed-up to take part in the Pavilion! This is on top of the 23 Israeli startups that have lined-up for their own Pavilion. But the surprises didn't stop there. Argentinian startups emailed us, asking if they can have their own dedicated Pavilion as well. The answer was, 'por supuesto amigos!' Let's wind this back a bit... Last week we announced that Disrupt SF will feature both the staple Israeli Pavilion and a new Brazilian one. Flying half a world to attend Disrupt isn't cheap, especially for early stage startups. That's where the Pavilion packages come in.
