Apple's shares, as you
may have seen, have been sliding in the market on the back of strong competition from Android device makers. Today, some new figures on recent smartphone sales will give the market both encouraging and discouraging food for thought on that matter as we dive into the final weekend of sales before Christmas.

Buy Me A Pie!, the cloud-powered grocery list maker for iOS, has released a nifty - and, potentially, relationship saving -- update for its app which adds support for Bump, so that users can now sync their shopping lists simply by bumping their iPhones together. The idea is to make it even easier for households to collaborate on and share grocery shopping duties.

Perhaps because there is not really any use in wasting energy fighting down rather than up the competition chain, today the beleaguered handset maker
Nokia announced that it has settled all of its patent disputes with the equally challenged BlackBerry maker
RIM. Nokia had different claims against RIM, and it looks like RIM is coming out the net loser here: Nokia says that it is getting a one-off, as well as ongoing, payments from the Canadian company. It is not making any payments to RIM. They are not disclosing the financial terms of those payments.

The U.S. Senate has
passed legislation that will make it easier for Netflix users to share what movies they have watched with their Facebook friends. The new legislation has already been
passed by the House of Representatives, so it just needs the president's signature before you start seeing updates about your friends' Netflix habits popping up in your Facebook newsfeed. Netflix already enables users in more than 40 countries and territories to share the titles of films and TV shows on the social networking site.

Instagram just released a
new version of its iOS app which allows people to login through Facebook's iOS 6 single sign-on integrations. It also adds a new filter called Mayfair, and returns the ability to share photos from any album on your iPhone instead of just the main camera roll, which many users missed after it disappeared from the app's last update. Users can now sign in directly with their FB account, while the Mayfair filter adds a cool lavender cast, lightens the center of the photo and has subtle vignetting (Instagram really seems to be into purple lately, as evidenced by Mayfair and
Willow, last week's new filter).

Chinese smartphone maker
Xiaomi, which has been referred to as "the Apple of China," strongly
hinted at an expansion into Hong Kong on its official Twitter account. Though the tweet was cryptically worded, attached is a graphic featuring the company's latest model, the
Xiaomi Mi2, with specs listed in traditional Chinese characters (which is used in Hong Kong, but not mainland China), Hong Kong floral emblem the Bauhinia flower and a silhouette of the Hong Kong islands and peninsulas.

Instagram's
back-and-forth on its advertising policy is a case study in tech PR blundering. It demonstrates the need for clear explanations of terms of services changes. It also raises the question of whether apps should update their terms to cover future monetization strategies as early as they know what these money-makers look like, or if they should notify users right before the ads go live.

Red Hat today acquired
ManageIQ for its IT management software. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ManageIQ is in the data center automation and virtualization business. Data center automation is essentially retrofitting a data center so it can have a degree of elasticity and integrate with public clouds. This means developing methods for managing virtualized servers with infrastructures that spread out over thousands of servers.

Leadbolt is one of those startups that's been flying under the radar for a while (more than two years in fact), but now it's ready to talk about what its founders describe as a smarter, more innovative approach to mobile advertising. According to CEO Dale Carr, most mobile ad companies are just trying to import ideas the existing online ad world: "I.e., they're putting banners on a smaller screen and saying that's mobile advertising." There are other companies experimenting with different ad formats, but with Leadbolt, it's not about any one type of ad. Instead, the company delivers a mix of ads that are specifically targeted based on how long someone has been using the app.

Following the controversy over recently-unveiled changes to its terms of service, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom
just announced via blog post that the advertising-related section of the TOS has reverted to "the original version that has been in effect since we launched the service in October 2010." The Facebook-owned photo service had already
hinted that this was coming, with
Systrom saying that the team was listening to user concerns and that there would be changes to the TOS to make it clear that "it is not our intention to sell your photos."

ThinkGeek's iCade 8-Bitty wireless gaming controller is pretty adorable, though limited. It has a retro feel, eliciting nostalgia for Super Nintendo, and hooks up easily with both iOS and Android devices. The games, however, are limited to various emulators like Atari's Greatest Hits and Pac Man. These are great games and appeal to just about anyone, but the retro controller supports exactly what you'd expect: old games, not new ones.

When I left Athens, Greece, over a decade ago, startups were definitely not cool. In fact, there were no tech startups at all. Since then a lot has changed. Tech entrepreneurship has become a global thing and, inspired by cultural influences like
The Social Network in addition to more serious factors, hackers all over the world want to build the next big thing. Despite the
Greek government-debt crisis and the
high unemployment rate, tech-savvy Greek folks are following the global trends and forging ahead to create their own jobs by founding promising early stage ventures. Tech entrepreneurship has become a legitimate career option for many of Greece's ambitious youth; perhaps they can contribute into turning the economy in a few years time?

Lockers are the new black in e-commerce. Amazon
recently debuted a Lockers delivery program, which allows customers to have their deliveries sent to nearby lockers. The service is especially helpful for consumers who aren't at home to receive deliveries. And Google just acquired BufferBox, a service that provides a locker delivery service,
for $25 million. E-commerce company Overstock is eyeing the locker space, as well.

While a study this week from MoPub suggested that iOS 6 adoption indeed did see a spike coinciding with the introduction of Google Maps, Chitika has a new, longer-term look at adoption in the U.S. that suggests a different explanation for MoPub's results. Culling data from millions of impressions across its mobile ad network, Chitika found that over a six day period beginning December 11f through December 17, iOS 6 impressions remained flat, just as in their initial study.

I was already pretty impressed with activity-recommenation startup
Weotta, but the app got a lot better with its latest update. It still includes the core Weotta experience — bringing up a "stack" of things you can can do right now, near your current location (at the moment, the app is recommending a bunch of lunch spots near my apartment). If there's something you like, you can swipe down to save it. With everything else, you can swipe up or across to show that you're not interested, and the next items in the stack will be tailored based on your interests (so if I keep rejecting lunch recommendations, the app should figure out that I'm not interested in food).

Mobile photo-sharing app
Tracks is today continuing its cross-platform expansion efforts, after arriving on Android earlier this fall and on Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT (yes, RT!) just a couple of weeks ago. RIM has just released its fiscal
Q3 2013 earnings report, and once against its quarterly results managed to squeak by analysts' grim forecasts. RIM reported a net GAAP loss of $114 million (equivalent to $0.22 per share) on revenues of $2.7 billion this time around, while the general consensus leading up to the release was that the company would lose $0.35 per share on $2.66 billion in revenues.
