The first thing Don Draper does when he gets to his office is give his busty secretary a suggestive wink. The second thing he does is take off his fedora. Finally, depending on the severity of the previous night, he completes his morning routine with a stiff drink.

Real Gamification Mechanics Require Simplicity And, Yes, Game Designers Can Do It

Dec 09, 2:00AM

wpid-Photo-8-Dec-2012-1559.jpgThe mysteries of mechanics are the reason why gamification seems like voodoo. And it shouldn't be. Game mechanics should be simple to explain, with clear actions and outcomes. So why do we get so confused by this, and how do we separate the "real" mechanics from the "fake" ones?

Problem Solved: IFTTT Produces A Way To Bypass Instagram Turning Off Twitter Cards

Dec 09, 12:19AM

Screen shot 2012-12-08 at 4.16.13 PMYou may have heard the disappointing news that Instagram (now a Facebook property) recently decided to tweak its support for Twitter cards such that users will no longer see their artistically-filtered iPhone photos in all their majestic glory.

Gamification Can Work — Just Don't Hire A Game Designer

Dec 08, 11:00PM

Rajat PahariaEditor's note: Rajat Paharia is the founder of Bunchball, a provider of online gamification solutions. Gartner recently issued a press release that made the following provocative assertion: "Gamification is currently being driven by novelty and hype. Gartner predicts that by 2014, 80 percent of current gamified applications will fail to meet business objectives primarily because of poor design."

However, there are a handful of myths about the purpose and function of growth hacking itself that have gained traction. In this article, I will explore six of the more common myths ones that serve to misconstrue growth hacking methods and goals and set false expectations.

Crowdsourcing Is Booming In Asia

Dec 08, 9:00PM

Alec LynchEditor's note: Alec Lynch is the founder and CEO of DesignCrowd, an Australia-based design crowdsourcing service that recently launched in India, Singapore, and the Philippines.  When most people think of crowdsourcing, they think of websites like iStockphoto, Mechanical Turk, Threadless or Wikipedia. But not many people think of Asia. The truth is, crowdsourcing in Asia is secretly booming, and Asia has quietly assumed a leadership role in the space.

Dec 08, 7:58PM

Titlecard-Best_FrenemiesSometimes self-interest can make for some unlikely friendships. According to Bloomberg, Apple and Google have finally teamed up to buy Kodak's portfolio of patents out of bankruptcy for an estimated $500 million. Yes, the two companies are bitter rivals when it comes to the smartphone market, and really every other market -- even wearable tech, apparently.

What The Daily Got Right From Day One

Dec 08, 7:00PM

Brian AlveyEditor's note: Brian Alvey is chief scientist and founder of Ceros News Corp announced earlier this week that it was shutting down The Daily. The following day, TechCrunch writer and CrunchFund General Partner MG Siegler criticized the iPad-only magazine, as well as other mag apps for being too big to quickly download and for clinging to a magazine format.

Gillmor Gang: Locked in the Trunk

Dec 08, 6:00PM

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang — Doc Searls, Robert Scoble, Dan Farber, John Taschek, and Steve Gillmor — celebrated another undisclosed term of imprisonment in the siloed world of Twitter. Sure, we talked about lots of stuff. Microsoft losing its huge bet on Windows 8 and Surface. Netflix and Spotify carving up the media that used to be called TV and radio. How the Internet is too big to fail or be taken over.

Square For Services, Not Just Goods: Payment Company Partners With San Francisco Ice Rink [TCTV]

Dec 08, 5:10PM

Square For Services, Not Just Goods_ Payment Company Partners With San Francisco Ice Rink [TCTV] | TechCrunchWhen you think about using Square, it’s very easy to drift off into thoughts of paying for coffee, food, or goods at a farmer’s market. In reality, the point-of-sale system that Square has created is a powerful thing for any business, small or large. Yesterday, TechCrunch spent some time at Safeway Ice Rink in Union Square, right in the heart of San Francisco. I’ve learned that the company is seriously infatuated with squares (even its new office will be in the shape of one), so it makes total sense that they approached the Union Square rink for the promotion. So far, so good. Have a look:

Q: What's Wrong With Quora?

Dec 08, 2:00PM

answerImagine that you are transported by a time machine to somewhen in the depths of prehistory, like maybe 2005 or something. Imagine further that you subsequently must try to convince people there/then that one day in the future, an online service which codifies, organizes, and ranks excellent answers to very nearly any imaginable question--for free!--will be wildly less successful than one that lets people post messages of 140 characters or less. I think you would have a hard time. From the early days of Quora, when it was the Biggest Thing In The Valley, people have been saying "Quora will be bigger than Twitter." But--sorry. No. Not even close. There are various theories as to why. Some claim "Quora power-users, the self-proclaimed elite who dominate the site, prevent Quora from growing its community."

Moscow's Tech Mojo Is Working — And Awakening

Dec 08, 10:02AM

ukraina 2With our TechCrunch Moscow event coming this week, Monty Munford gives us a flavour of the atmosphere amid Moscow's tech scene. The Radisson Royal Hotel in Moscow isn't a cheap place to eat blinis and caviare, but rather like some people who like to have tea at the Ritz in London for the hell of it, it's not the worst place to spend a morning.

Realtime Analytics For Education: Ontract Wants To Do For Student Data What Mint.com Did For Financial Data

Dec 08, 5:52AM

Screen shot 2012-12-07 at 9.28.53 PMJulian Miller taught high school for four years, and like many teachers, he cared about his students' learning outcomes -- about getting them across the finish line. Unfortunately, current educational software and systems don't make that easy. Teachers that want to follow student progress and understand which tools or methods are working and why are routinely forced to log into six to eight different software products to get any sort of 360-degree view of students and classes, he says.

The Subscription Economy Is About Strengthening Customer Relationships, Not Just Recurring Revenues

Dec 08, 5:00AM

Tien TzuoEditor's note: Tien Tzuo is the CEO of Zuora, a subscription billing company. It's not about subscriptions versus pay-per-use. Just as industries have different needs, businesses and customers are different and so have varying needs. There is not a single pricing model that is best for everyone. We've found that offering a plethora of options is often better for both customers and vendors.

Gift Guide: Graphic Novels Worth Buying In Print

Dec 08, 3:00AM

imagesSometimes it's nice to share a good book, and if you know me then you know that most of the books I'm buying are comics and graphic novels. These are a few of my absolute favorites this year and I recommend picking up a solid, meaty hardcover and hanging onto it for a few years. You know, like the old days.

After Taking Flak For Sketchy Promotion, Carwash Startup Cherry Changes Wording And Cancels Trial Memberships

Dec 07, 11:48PM

cherry logoSome people really don't like a recent promotion from Cherry, the startup that brings car washes to its users. In a series of tweets which he then aggregated on Storify, Rod Begbie declared that Cherry was made up of "scammy rip-off artists who deserve to die unloved and alone" — and it looks like the company is responding to his criticism. Begbie's complaint is with a free carwash promotion that Cherry was offering. Turns out that promotion came with some strings attached — the carwash is indeed free, but people who sign up for it were automatically enrolled in a Cherry membership plan, with recurring payments that automatically start after the trial period.
