Dec 10, 10:56AM
Zopa, the oldest of P2P lending sites, certainly in the UK, has announced that it's raised a new "multi-million pound" round led by Augmentum Capital, the VC fund backed by RIT Capital. That the company isn't being more specific with the figure, however, suggests that it may not have reached the heights of its previous C Round, which CrunchBase pegs at $12.9m. It also comes at a time when the UK government appears to taking an interest in the P2P lending sector, with regulation under serious consideration.

Samsung Unveils Its "Premium Suite Upgrade" For The Galaxy S III
Dec 10, 3:15AM
Samsung has unveiled its "Premium Suite Upgrade" for the Galaxy S III, as promised in a teaser last Friday. The update includes the highly anticipated Multi-Window feature, which is already available on Galaxy Note devices and allows users to run two apps in separate windows at the same time. But that's probably the most exciting thing about the changelog.
Hackbright Academy Turns Women Into Pro Developers In 10 Weeks, And It's Accepting Applications For 2013
Dec 10, 2:42AM
Amidst all the argument about "brogrammer" culture and the presence of women in Silicon Valley, here's a company that's actively working to change things, albeit on a small scale (for now) — Hackbright Academy, which describes itself as "a 10 week training program designed to help women become awesome programmers." The academy just graduated its 16-person second class (that's a photo of graduation day to the left). Graduation comes shortly after career day, so it's probably too early to talk about how many of the recent graduates actually get jobs, but co-founder David J. Phillips (who also co-founded location startup Banjo) shared some earlier data. Eight out of 12 students in Hackbright's first class, were looking for immediate employment, he said, and all eight of them got offers, from companies like New Relic, Survey Monkey, Cisco, and Bump.

Gabe Newell Foresees A Slew Of Living Room Gaming PCs (Including One From Valve?) In 2013
Dec 10, 12:01AM
I don't normally expect much to come out of Spike TV's annual Video Game Awards, but Kotaku managed to score a gem of an interview with Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell earlier this weekend. In his brief exchange, Newell said he expected to see several PC makers crafting Steam-centric gaming PCs for the living room in 2013, and that their products would rival the next generation Xbox and PlayStation.
Balancing Innovation And Regulation In The Sharing Economy
Dec 09, 11:00PM
The sharing economy is booming, as companies like Airbnb, Getaround, and Lyft are disrupting incumbent industries. But by using technology to create new services, these companies don't fit neatly into the regulatory framework in those industries. New York University Stern School of Business professor Arun Sundararajan believes regulators should evolve to deal with these new businesses.
It's Rumor Sunday! Apple Has Been Cozying Up To DIY Guide App Snapguide
Dec 09, 10:52PM
It's Rumor Sunday!® again here at TechCrunch. We have been hearing a recurring report, from a couple of different sources, that Apple has been interested in buying Snapguide -- the web and mobile app that lets people create and share do-it-yourself guides for things like crafty holiday gifts, cooking, and teaching your dog to play the piano. Before we go any further with the details, we should let you know that Daniel Raffel, the co-founder of Snapguide, has been very clear that the startup, which has to date raised $7 million from a mix of VCs and angel investors including Index Ventures, Atlas Venture, CrunchFund, SV Angel and Dave Morin, is not engaged in any formal negotiations with Apple.
10 Conferences To Attend If You Are Looking To Meet Developers
Dec 09, 10:00PM
The event world is getting really stale while at the same point showing a new spring of innovation that in many respects mirror the enterprise and its own paradox of sluggishness and fresh perspectives. The big trade events and user conferences do have their merit.
Half A Million People Voted Against Facebook's Governance Changes, But Not Enough As Polls Close Tomorrow
Dec 09, 9:57PM
615,000 people have cast their ballot in Facebook's vote over site governance and policy changes, and 87% want to stop them. But unless 299.4 million more people vote by tomorrow morning, Facebook users will lose the ability to vote on future changes, and their data will be intermingled with Instagram. Enough votes won't be cast, so Facebook's experiment with "democracy" will be coming to a close.

Dec 09, 9:00PM
Alexandra Wilkis Wilson walked into famed celebrity designer Zac Posen's showroom in November 2007 prepared to give the pitch of her life. The Gilt co-founder was attempting to sell Posen and his team on putting some of the designer's excess inventory on the yet-to-be-launched flash sales e-commerce platform. At the time, the flash sales industry was nascent, so many, including the fashion industry, had no idea what a flash sale was.

We're seeing chatter on Twitter that Instagram photos are not showing up in Twitter streams anymore. This is obviously interesting considering Instagram's recent moves to remove support for Twitter cards last week. We've reached out to both Facebook and Twitter for confirmation.
Will Zynga Emerge As A Gaming Company Or Gambling Company?
Dec 09, 7:31PM
There is more than a bit of schadenfreude among longtime insiders in the gaming industry at Zynga’s performance over the last year. The company has fallen from a private, pre-IPO valuation of around $14 billion to just $2 billion over the past year as it failed to maintain growth on the Facebook platform and didn’t transition quickly enough to compensate on Android and iOS. At a $2 billion market cap, Zynga isn’t worth that much more than the $1.6 billion in cash and marketable securities it had at the end of the last quarter. But now that shares are up more than 10 percent since Zynga acknowledged that it is taking steps toward real-money gaming in the U.S., the company faces an interesting question about its identity in the long-term. Will it be a gaming company, or a gambling company? Zynga has a number of growth opportunities — on mobile platforms, its own destination site and in real-money gaming. But Zynga’s efforts at building its own platform have had mixed results over several years and mobile platforms haven’t lent themselves to a winner-take-all environment so far (and this applies to everyone). So Zynga’s shares are acutely sensitive to any real-money gaming possibilities. They rose 7 percent the day after Zynga said it was making steps toward applying for a gambling license in Nevada, and they fell by 5 percent back in June when Zynga’s vice president and Zynga Casino general manager Jesse Janosov didn’t mention tangible progress on the gambling front at a big press event. Like every newly public company, Zynga faces the question about how much it is willing to succumb to the short-term profit pressures of the public markets. And it will probably give in. Zynga has always been more of a mercenary company than a missionary company. Many of its earliest employees didn’t have histories in the gaming world, and in many ways, that allowed them move quickly and not be too attached to any of the industry’s long-term notions of what a game should or ought to be. Even though we’re sometimes critical of the company, Zynga has done a lot to influence the direction of the industry in popularizing the freemium business model that has long been accepted in Japan, China and South Korea. It pioneered an aggressive metrics-driven approach to gaming. It pushed many older companies to move quickly from treating games as a consumer product you
