The Enemy Of My Enemy Is My Friend

Feb 21, 8:32AM

friendMicrosoft and Apple should hate one another right now. I mean, really hate each other. After decades of domination, Microsoft has watched their rival move from death's door to become the most valuable company in the world — over $200 billion more valuable than Microsoft itself. And it was Microsoft who helped get Apple there, remember, with a timely cash infusion in 1997. Steve Ballmer laughed off the iPhone, which eventually helped kill off Windows Mobile — and it's now bigger than all of Microsoft's businesses combined. And the company shrugged off the iPad, even as it established a category, tablets, which Microsoft itself had been trying to establish for years.

Yandex, Google's Russian Rival, Is Twitter's New Real-Time Search Partner

Feb 21, 7:46AM

yandexA significant step for Twitter in its international growth: Yandex, Russia's search giant, today announced that it will carry Twitter data in all of its search results. The news also underscores one possible route to revenue generation for Twitter: Yandex describes this as a licensing deal. The terms of it were not disclosed but Microsoft reportedly paid Twitter $30 million for a similar search agreement.

Ad Startup Rocket Fuel Just Had Its First Profitable Quarter

Feb 21, 3:29AM

rocketfuelStartup Rocket Fuel claims to use "rocket science" to ad campaigns, and it sounds like that science is turning into real revenue. The company says it made $44.5 million in revenue last year, compared to $16.6 million in 2010 and $2.4 million in 2009. In fact, CEO George John tells me that in the fourth quarter of 2011, the company was profitable for the first time. Not that he plans to stay profitable — he says it would be "weird" for Rocket Fuel to be profitable all the time, since it's trying to grow. Instead, he plans to be "slightly unprofitable" until Q4 2012, when it will probably be profitable again, thanks in part to seasonal cycles.

China Telecom To Get iPhone In March

Feb 21, 3:29AM

iphone-4sApple may have seen $13 billion in sales in China last year, but apparently those numbers could have been higher if they'd had a bit more faith. The iPhone sold in huge quantities in the markets served by China Unicom, which since October of 2009 has been the only carrier over there to offer it. Adding a second major carrier to the mix should expand the market and the sales, as it has here in the US, and China Telecom has stepped up to bat. It's the third-largest carrier after China Mobile and China Unicom, though the situation over there is rather different owing to fact that much of the industry is state-owned. Regardless, it represents a major opportunity for everyone involved.

Apple's "Project Dolphin" Green Energy Facility In North Carolina Among Nation's Biggest

Feb 21, 1:21AM

SOLARWord got around way back in the middle of 2010 that Apple was building a monster data center near Maiden, South North Carolina. Later, it was shown to be hosting a ton of Nuance software, for obvious reasons. Less widely reported was the fact that nearby, scores of acres were being cleared for a solar array. Now, it turns out that solar array will be the largest "end user-owned, onsite" one in the nation. They're also planning a biogas/fuel-cell facility with similar credentials.

Google TV Root Hack Allows For Hulu Streaming, Makes The Connected TV Platform Interesting Again

Feb 21, 12:04AM

SonyGoogle TV launched a year and a half ago. The platform has gone nowhere since according to a recent survey. It relaunched late last year, which brought improved performance and a sweet search tool, but it's still not worth your time. However, it's finally getting a bit interesting thanks to Sony Internet TV root hack that enables Flash, finally breaking through the big media's blockade preventing users from accessing Hulu and other streaming sites.

Bad Taste In Music? Crowdsource Your Next Party Playlist With Anthm

Feb 21, 12:04AM

anthm2Cultivating the perfect party playlist requires more than a little time and effort, but when there are kegs to be tapped and cheese plates to be arranged, the task can sadly fall by the wayside. That's where a new iOS app called Anthm comes in -- instead of putting the playlist together all on your lonesome, you can have your guests do it instead.

Feb 20, 11:37PM

Well let me just click on this animated red button here ..."

Flurry: Mobile Ads Still Get The Short Straw In Brand Spend; Women Driving eCPMs

Feb 20, 10:06PM

MobileAdSpend_vs_TimeSpent-resized-600There have been some big numbers thrown at the medium of mobile advertising recently -- eMarketer says it will make $2.6 billion in the U.S. alone this year; the IAB says that 72 percent of top brand marketers are going to increase spend in the medium in the next two years. But some new research from app analytics firm Flurry throws a little bit of cold water on what, exactly, is happening in the world of mobile ads today.

India's Times Internet Embraces Real-Time Finance With ET Speed

Feb 20, 9:39PM

et speedA few years ago, we saw a wave of startups (such as Cake Financial and Covestor) that tried to reinvent the way people made financial decisions, usually by adding social features or more data and analytics. Now elements of that approach are coming to India with the launch of ET Speed. The site was created by Times Internet Limited, the online arm of India's Times Group. As the name suggests, the big emphasis is real-time information — users should be able to track Indian stocks in real-time. They can also follow other users (including some yet-to-be-named financial experts, according to TIL), sharing and receiving financial advice. CEO Rishi Khiani that the site was created "keeping in mind the requirements of the Indian consumers — a mix of real time news/analysis, expert advice and community advice." He characterizes the whole combination as a "Twitter-like strategy."

Traffic Vs Friendship: My Tough Decision To Turn On Facebook Subscribe

Feb 20, 8:50PM

fbsub022012I've been using Facebook since its early years. So today it has the most complete and accurate set of connections to people I've known throughout my life. Exactly because of its success in assembling this group, I've avoided turning on its five month-old Subscribe feature -- until now. For the many others of you who both want attention but don't want to spam your friends about your work, here's my reasoning for taking my Facebook profile public.

What On Earth Is Google Doing With Orkut?

Feb 20, 8:07PM

logout_logo_2011_no_betaJust spotted in Orkut, Google's also-ran social networking site: a new Google+ badge, one of the first integrations between the two services. Orkut members who also have a Google+ account are now being rewarded in the form of a badge reading "Google+ user," which they can choose to make visible on their Orkut profile. No, it's not a big deal in terms of the feature itself (oooh, a badge), but it's an indication of Orkut's current status in Google's eyes. Orkut and Google+ are different products, and both sites will continue to exist, the company tells us today by way of explanation. "Orkut has a large user base, especially in Brazil and India, and we will continue to invest in the product," notes a Google spokesperson. Wait really? How on earth does that fit in with your current social strategy? Sorry, Google, continuing Orkut support just doesn't make any sense.

Microsoft's Updated SkyDrive Service Could Put iCloud To Shame

Feb 20, 7:55PM

skydrive2Microsoft's SkyDrive is an adequate cloud storage service (and one that boasts 17 million customers to boot), but it's not something that the folks at Redmond can afford to leave in its current state. With Apple playing up their iCloud integration in their forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion update, SkyDrive program managers Mike Torres and Omar Shahine took to the Building Windows 8 blog to outline what's next for their own cloud service.

Another iPad 3 Component Leak Shows "A5X" Processor

Feb 20, 7:39PM

ipad_3_logic_boardAmong the expected changes to the next generation of iPad is an improved processor. Seeing as the original iPad had the A4 and the iPad 2 had the A5, it was logical to guess that the iPad 3 would have an A6. As it turns out, that's not the case: a leaked picture of the iPad 3's logic board (or what is claimed to be so) shows not A6, but A5X written on top of the chip. In a way it's totally inconsequential; not only is the naming scheme brand new and potentially arbitrary, but we barely understand what's happening under the hood in the A5. A5X or A6, what difference does it make? Well, here's the thing.

Microsoft Nails Down Windows End-Of-Life Dates

Feb 20, 7:22PM

medium_3419565232Still using Windows Vista? XP? Why? Well, whatever the reason, Microsoft has clarified some of their end-of-life dates for older versions of Windows, including XP. This is mostly about support on the business side but it could be useful if you've got an old machine that's acting up (or you refuse to upgrade).

Feb 20, 5:16PM

Thompson currently serves as CEO of Virtual Instruments, which offers products that ensure the performance and availability of applications deployed in virtualized and private cloud computing environments. Thompson also served as chairman and CEO of Symantec from 1999 to 2009, where he grew revenues from $600 million to over $6 billion. The Post-Office Generation

Feb 20, 5:02PM

American-Splendor-thumb-560xauto-23178A recent post on MinimalMac posits an interesting case for the slow, growing sense of the irrelevance of Microsoft, at least in the applications space. Go and read the piece - it's excellent - but the gist is that for years Microsoft banked on Office being as important to users as, say, Windows. Office is Microsoft's biggest money maker and for most of this decade no self-respecting IT department would consider any alternatives, even though they existed. You needed it to get work done. OpenOffice? That stuff was just weird. However, with the rise of tablets, office workers have suddenly noticed that they don't need Office anymore. All they need is an email app, a notepad, and something like Dropbox. You can open Office docs on any device, you can edit text on nearly any tablet, and $9.99 gets you a capable word processor on the iPad. In short, Office is becoming irrelevant.

Motorola Atrix 3 Leak Promises A Quad-Core Chip, 720p Screen, And A Huge Battery

Feb 20, 4:53PM

atrix3The Motorola Atrix line has been a big one for the company. Yet with two iterations out so far, the phones have yet to really wow anyone. But according to this specs/photo leak, the Atrix 3 may leave you humming a different tune. Tian Jin Daily reports that the Atrix 3 will sport a 4.3-inch 720p display, which is a nice start but that's not even where things get exciting. Under the hood, you'll find a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 2GB of RAM and a massive 3300mAh battery.
