Enterprise wasn't ready for blockchain, so Manifold brought its ledger to consumers instead

May 06, 7:11PM

While the cryptocurrency craze last year brought more consumer attention to blockchain technology, the future of this movement will be in the enterprise. Blockchain's true potential is its ability to replace the archaic and centralized infrastructure that powers everything from payments to land registries with digital-first, decentralized, and trusted networks of data. Skepticism, though, abounds. […]

Subscription hell

May 06, 4:14PM

Another week, another paywall. This time, it's Bloomberg, which announced that it would be adding a comprehensive paywall to its news service and television channel (except TicToc, its media partnership with Twitter). A paywall was hardly a surprise, but what was surprising was the price: the standard subscription is $35 a month (up from $0 […]

Kubernetes stands at an important inflection point

May 06, 3:33PM

Last week at KubeCon and CloudNativeCon in Copenhagen, we saw an open source community coming together, full of vim and vigor and radiating positive energy as it recognized its growing clout in the enterprise world. Kubernetes, which came out of Google just a few years ago, has gained acceptance and popularity astonishingly rapidly — and […]

Original Content podcast: No hiding from Netflix's show about killer rain

May 06, 2:00PM

We were skeptical about The Rain, a new Danish series from Netflix. Not that the trailer was bad, exactly. It’s just hard to take a show with the tagline “Stay Dry. Stay Alive.” very seriously. But here at the Original Content podcast, we don’t just judge shows by their trailers. No, we actually watched the […]

Personal privacy vs. public security: fight!

May 06, 1:00PM

Personal privacy is a fairly new concept. Most people used to live in tight-knit communities, constantly enmeshed in each other’s lives. The notion that privacy is an important part of personal security is even newer, and often contested, while the need for public security — walls which must be guarded, doors which must be kept […]

How did Thumbtack win the on-demand services market?

May 05, 10:30PM

Earlier today, the services marketplace Thumbtack held a small conference for 300 of its best gig economy workers at an event space in San Francisco. For the nearly ten-year-old company the event was designed to introduce some new features and a redesign of its brand that had softly launched earlier in the week. On hand, […]

Lobe's ridiculously simple machine learning platform aims to empower non-technical creators

May 05, 6:30PM

Machine learning may be the tool de jour for everything from particle physics to recreating the human voice, but it's not exactly the easiest field to get into. Despite the complexities of video editing and sound design, we have UIs that let even a curious kid dabble in them — why not with machine learning? That's the goal of Lobe, a startup and platform that genuinely seems to have made AI models as simple to put together as LEGO bricks.

UK watchdog orders Cambridge Analytica to give up data in US voter test case

May 05, 6:08PM

Another big development in the personal data misuse saga attached to the controversial Trump campaign-linked UK-based political consultancy, Cambridge Analytica — which could lead to fresh light being shed on how the company and its multiple affiliates acquired and processed US citizens’ personal data to build profiles on millions of voters for political targeting purposes. The […]

Unroll.me to close to EU users saying it can't comply with GDPR

May 05, 3:33PM

Put on your best unsurprised face: Unroll.me, a company that has, for years, used the premise of ‘free’ but not very useful ’email management’ services to gain access to people’s email inboxes in order to data-mine the contents for competitive intelligence — and controversially flog the gleaned commercial insights to the likes of Uber — […]

A life sciences firm run by a top VC and a cofounder of Alphabet's life sciences arm, just raised its biggest fund yet

May 05, 3:05PM

There’s no end to the number of fascinating devices and therapies being created right now in the fields of health and life sciences. The investors behind them are often pretty interesting, too, given the expertise needed to make informed bets on what are often completely unproven projects. Such is the case with Foresite Capital, a […]

Particle physics gets the machine learning treatment as collider data multiplies

May 04, 8:16PM

The volume of data particle physicists have to sort through at the Large Hadron Collider is staggering, and it's about to increase by an order of magnitude. To cope with this torrent of data, CERN is turning to machine learning, offering prizes for AI models that can cut through the clutter and help make the next breakthrough.

A friendly robotic arm plays tic-tac-toe to help rehabilitate patients

May 04, 7:47PM

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel are building a tic-tac-toe game to help patients with their rehabilitation exercises. The game is played on a grid of boxes and includes “embodied” and non-embodied play. Embodied play means a robotic arm will grab and place a marker – in this case a small cup […]
