Lobe's ridiculously simple machine learning platform aims to empower non-technical creators

May 05, 6:30PM

Machine learning may be the tool de jour for everything from particle physics to recreating the human voice, but it's not exactly the easiest field to get into. Despite the complexities of video editing and sound design, we have UIs that let even a curious kid dabble in them — why not with machine learning? That's the goal of Lobe, a startup and platform that genuinely seems to have made AI models as simple to put together as LEGO bricks.

Unroll.me to close to EU users saying it can't comply with GDPR

May 05, 3:33PM

Put on your best unsurprised face: Unroll.me, a company that has, for years, used the premise of ‘free’ but not very useful ’email management’ services to gain access to people’s email inboxes in order to data-mine the contents for competitive intelligence — and controversially flog the gleaned commercial insights to the likes of Uber — […]

A life sciences firm run by a top VC and a cofounder of Alphabet's life sciences arm, just raised its biggest fund yet

May 05, 3:05PM

There’s no end to the number of fascinating devices and therapies being created right now in the fields of health and life sciences. The investors behind them are often pretty interesting, too, given the expertise needed to make informed bets on what are often completely unproven projects. Such is the case with Foresite Capital, a […]

NSA triples metadata collection numbers, sucking up over 500 million call records in 2017

Particle physics gets the machine learning treatment as collider data multiplies

May 04, 8:16PM

The volume of data particle physicists have to sort through at the Large Hadron Collider is staggering, and it's about to increase by an order of magnitude. To cope with this torrent of data, CERN is turning to machine learning, offering prizes for AI models that can cut through the clutter and help make the next breakthrough.

A friendly robotic arm plays tic-tac-toe to help rehabilitate patients

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel are building a tic-tac-toe game to help patients with their rehabilitation exercises. The game is played on a grid of boxes and includes “embodied” and non-embodied play. Embodied play means a robotic arm will grab and place a marker – in this case a small cup […]

May 04, 5:08PM

There will be no “Vine 2” — at least for now. Trying to take on the giant social networks without external funding proved too tall a task for six-second video app Vine’s co-founder Dom Hofmann. “I've made the very difficult decision of postponing the V2 project for an indefinite amount of time. There are several reasons […]
