Apple's Flashlight Is Why We Can't Fund Nice Dumb Things
Jun 11, 1:47AM
Flashlight apps are a testament to the power and simplicity of modern technology. Power outage because of a hurricane? There's an app for that. Need to stealthily kill a mosquito without waking up your partner? There's an app for that, too. Actually, there are more than 1,000 in the App Store alone, many with 5-star ratings, because flashlight apps, which turn the flash of your iPhone camera into a literal flashlight, are awesome. Flashlight apps make you feel like your phone is more Swiss Army knife than Twitter receptacle.
Take A Good Look At Apple's New iOS 7 With These Early Screenshots
Jun 11, 1:27AM
iOS 7 was announced today officially at WWDC 2013, and it brings a lot of visual changes to Apple's mobile OS, plus a host of new features and functionality as well. The official release is still a few months off, but one enterprising developer, Brian Roizen, has posted a fairly extensive collection of screenshots from the new beta out today. The screens really just show a close-up view of what Apple demoed on stage, but they're definitely worth a look if you want a better idea of the coming changes.

Apple Publishes iOS 7 Transition Guide To Help Developers Adopt Flat Design
Jun 10, 11:50PM
As expected, Apple is introducing a completely new design language for iOS 7. For developers, this means they will have to adapt their apps to match the rest of the operating system if they don't want them to look antiquated. Thankfully, Apple today also published a pretty extensive guide to designing for iOS 7 and transitioning apps to the new version that helps developers understand how they should use new UI elements like borderless buttons, translucent bars and full-screen layouts for their apps.
With $1.2M In Funding, TapCommerce Aims To Bring Ad Retargeting To Smartphones
Jun 10, 11:23PM
Retargeting, everyone's favorite web advertising technology, is coming to smartphones thanks to a startup called TapCommerce. The company isn't exactly launching today, but it has been relatively quiet, and now it's announcing some initial advertisers, as well as disclosing a $1.2 million round that it raised last year. Retargeting allows businesses to target their ads based on a user's past activity. At its best, that means the ads are smarter, with a better sense of what you're looking for and where you are in the purchase process. (At its worst, it can be creepy and annoying.) It has become a staple of web advertising, particularly for e-commerce companies, but it doesn't work on Apple's mobile devices because they don't support third-party cookies.
MindTouch Delivers For SAP And Salesforce By Turning The FAQ Into A Self-Service Sales Tool
Jun 10, 11:23PM
MindTouch is using data to provide context to customer support pages so people can get better answers to the questions they have about a product or a service. The FAQ just doesn't do it anymore. It's either because the questions don't apply or the answers don't address a customer's issues. MindTouch has won customers such as SAP and Salesforce.com by turning the manual into a contextual data engine that correlates to the individual and the overall customer base. It turns product and service data into a knowledge engine that serves relevant information on a per-article basis. The contextual knowledge base can also be applied to search results. Articles that get the most interest rise to the top.
iOS 7 Leaves Older iPhones And iPads Out Of The Fun
Jun 10, 11:01PM
iOS 7 hits iPhones this Fall, but only the iPhone 5 and iPod touch will get all the features announced at WWDC. The iPhone 4 and 4S will get the new look and a splattering of features. And forget about the iPhone 3GS and older iPhones. They will be stuck in the skeuomorphism world of iOS 6 forever.
Chinese Microblog Site Tencent Weibo Will Be Baked Into iOS 7, Just Like Facebook And Twitter
Jun 10, 10:45PM
It's been a big news day for all things Apple, and a lot of the buzz has been around the company's renewed focus on American manufacturing. But one feature announced today in Apple's new iOS 7 mobile operating system shows that Apple's dedication to China -- and specifically, the market of Chinese iPhone users which is growing at a "mind-boggling" rate -- is only getting stronger.

On Tuesday, the company is announcing a new injection of $130 million -- understood to be a record round of funding for a Russian ecommerce site, passing the $100 million that Ozon, Russia's Amazon, picked up in 2011. This latest round was led by Access Industries, the VC and holding company controlled by Len Blavatnik, with participation also from Rocket Internet regulars, Summit Partners and Tengelmann.
Survey: Majority Of Americans Think NSA Spying Is More Important Than Privacy
Jun 10, 10:09PM
Despite the conniption fit over the National Security Agency's Internet snooping, most Americans are perfectly okay with Big Brother spying on them. "A majority of Americans – 56 percent – say the National Security Agency's (NSA) program tracking the telephone records of millions of Americans is an acceptable way for the government to investigate terrorism," explains a new Pew Report.
iTunes Radio? Pandora And Slacker Are Not Impressed
Jun 10, 10:03PM
Apple unveiled its long-rumored iRadio, er, iTunes Radio service this morning at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Now that we know the basics of the streaming music service (which is supposed to launch this fall), one of the obvious questions is: What does this mean for existing Internet radio/online music services like Pandora and Spotify? Well, I emailed Pandora, Rdio, Slacker, and Spotify to see what they thought. Spotify declined to comment, and Rdio says it's still working on something (I'll update this post when I get it), but the other services all sent me brief statements. There are no huge surprises, and yes, the dreaded "validate" word gets trotted out once. Even so, there's some entertaining talk about why they're not feeling too threatened by the news.

The Best Features Of iOS 7
Jun 10, 9:41PM

Not only has Apple given iOS an entirely new look and feel, courtesy of head designer Jonathan Ive, but it has also revealed a revamped suite of core apps like Photos, Camera, Calendar, Weather and others, added new services like iTunes Radio and features like AirDrop, while also making it less lucrative for would-be thieves to steal your iPhone, and much more.

BuzzTable Forks Over Even More Restaurant Customer Data With New ControlCenter
Jun 10, 8:50PM
BuzzTable seems to be progressing in its noble quest to make getting seated at a restaurant as quick and painless as possible. With its newly launched ControlCenter, BuzzTable's guest communication platform now comprises three parts: WaitList+ for hosts, the BuzzTable app for guests, and ControlCenter, a web app that delivers to operators information gathered by the first two. That includes wait-time analytics, customer demographics, loyalty reward redemptions, guest feedback, and the ability to export customer data like email addresses. In short: a whole lot of information that can help restaurants figure out what’s selling, to whom, and what they can do better, straight from customers’ mouths in real time. This kind of constant feedback could have huge implications for the management of both single storefront eateries and national chains. And it looks like corporate heads are catching on. BuzzTable is currently being incorporated at all Famous Dave's locations nationwide, and they are now working with major chains like California Pizza Kitchen, On The Border, TGI Friday’s, Boston's, Joe's Crab Shack, and Macaroni Grill. BuzzTable reports that in the last 120 days, they have increased their registered restaurants by over 350%. The company was founded in 2011 to streamline the process of seating guests at casual dining restaurants and improve customer experience by nipping the chaos and aggravation of waiting for a table in the bud. The hungry masses can check their progress on the BuzzTable app (iPhone and Android; those without the app can sign up for SMS messages), receive rewards updates, and give feedback. Meanwhile, restaurant hosts use Waitlist+ (iOS, Android, and web) to manage their lists and automatically build guest profiles. These profiles include history with the restaurant, preferences, and birthdays — and this information is shared between chain locations nationwide, meaning an Applebee's in Milwaukee will know you as well as one in midtown Manhattan. BuzzTable reports that use of their products has reduced guest complaints by more than 50% and cut guest walk-away rates by 28%. BuzzTable CEO and co-founder Warner Siebert said the company’s goals for the next year are all about sales. “We’ve developed a number of distribution channels that allow us to train and launch at restaurants all across North America right from our offices in New York City… so, it’s time for us to step on the gas,” he said. “In terms of platform development, we’ve completed our core products, but we
