Snapchat Launches v5.0 With Revamped UI, Swipe Navigation, And In-App Profiles
Jun 06, 1:06AM
Snapchat, the app that lets you send pics and videos that self-destruct, has just released a huge update to version 5.0 "Banquo" (I'll get to that in a minute), which includes a dramatic revamp of the app's UI. The update also brings with it a few new features, like the ability to double-tap to reply, in-app profiles, and better tools for adding friends.
Report: NSA Secretly Collecting Phone Records Of All U.S. Verizon Calls
Jun 06, 12:46AM
The National Security Administration is secretly collecting phone record information for all calls on the Verizon network. "Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls," reports The Guardian, which broke the story of the top-secret project after it obtained record of a court order mandating Verizon hand over the information.
On A Mission To Build The Next Big Pet Brand, Whistle Launches A $99 Fitbit (And Health Monitor) For Pooches
Jun 06, 12:33AM
Yes, it's become exceedingly clear that the Internet has entered into a prodigious, lascivious (and hilarious) relationship with cats. But, at the end of the day, when it comes to the title of "Man/Woman/Child's Best Friend," it's the friendly neighborhood pooch that takes the cake. In my own experience, even when The World thinks you're an idiot, life gets you down and you've forgotten to feed them, their tales are still going to wag -- just at the sight of you. Sure, they may have questionable taste, but there's probably no better representation of unconditional love than your local canine.
Fastly Raises $10M For Content Delivery Network Built For Mobile, Real-Time World
Jun 05, 11:36PM
Fastly has raised $10 million in a Series B round for its SSD-powered content delivery network (CDN) used by the likes of Disqus, Twitter and GitHub. The round was led by August Capital. Fastly, founded by Artur Bergman, the former CTO of Wikia, uses a patent-pending fast-caching engine that delivers content at what the company says is the fastest recorded time to first byte. Fastly caches content, making it possible to do instant purges. For example, on a blog like TechCrunch, a writer may post and then a few minutes later update the story. Until the cache purges, readers will see the older version. As we all know, purges that do not happen quickly can make for a horrid user experience.
Google Wants To Make Your Android Device More Like A Nexus With Its New Keyboard App
Jun 05, 11:08PM
Heads up Android keyboard aficionados -- if your handset runs Android 4.0 or later and you're just not thrilled with the keyboard you already have, you can now download Google's stock keyboard app from the Google Play store. According to a post on the official Android Google+ page, the app has launched in certain English-speaking markets with a wider rollout to follow shortly. That's not to say that people in those launch markets are restricted to pecking out missives in English -- the app comes with libraries for 26 languages, as well as the ability to select next word suggestions and swipe across the keyboard to form words. In the event you haven't played around with it yet, it's really quite good.
Meet SpinMe, The iOS Alarm For People Who Suck At Waking Up
Jun 05, 10:48PM
I'm not sure I can aptly explain just how absolutely terrible I am at getting up in the morning. I know, I know. "BOO HOO, GARFIELD, EVERYONE HATES MORNINGS". No. I don't just hate getting out of bed. It's more like I was genetically engineered to be part of a superhuman army of soldiers that are REALLY GOOD at not sleeping, but they screwed up and got my shit all backwards. I've got high hopes that this app can help.
Mourn The Loss Of Odwalla, Mourn The Loss Of Your Job
Jun 05, 8:57PM
When the Odwalla and the Red Bull dry up, when the weekly happy hour becomes crappy hour, when you have to peel your own eggs — these are the leading indicators that your company is in trouble. That's one of the key takeaways — for me, at least — of a wide-ranging Reddit AMA with a user calling himself former_zyngite.
App Infrastructure Startup Buddy.com Gets Into The Analytics Business
Jun 05, 8:50PM
Buddy.com today announced a mobile analytics service that's supposed to give publishers and brands a better sense of who's actually using their apps and how they're using them. There's plenty of competition on this front — Andreessen Horowitz-backed Mixpanel, for example, has increasingly become a mobile analytics company, and it makes a big deal out of not focusing on "bullshit metrics" like downloads. Buddy CEO and co-founder David McLauchlan was similarly dismissive of using downloads as a meaningful way to measure app engagement.
Social Media Is "Worst Menace To Society" Says Turkey PM, 25 Twitter Users Arrested
Jun 05, 8:15PM
Turkish authorities have arrested 25 protesters for the high crime of using Twitter. Amid widespread violent clashes, police rounded up netizens on Tuesday night for "spreading untrue information." Embattled Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan has labeled social media "the worst menace to society," saying of Twitter, "The best example of lies can be found there." Social media has been an essential tool for Turkish protesters to skirt the tight-lipped government-run media. "The Turkish media should be ashamed. For the past 48 hours, the people have been waging a struggle and you have not reported anything about it. Shame on you," said Fatih Akin, a prominent Turkish film director.
TechCrunch Returns To China, For Keeps
Jun 05, 7:09PM
TechCrunch has a big international readership, and we all know there are no geographical boundaries to the startup revolution. No country has ridden that wave better than China, where huge markets, a red-hot economy, a controversial governmental hand and plenty of technologists and entrepreneurs have delivered a huge number of new companies, including giants Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba.
Founder Stories: Climate Corp's David Friedberg On Why Leading A Company Is Like Playing Poker
Jun 05, 7:00PM
For this week's Founder Stories, I sat down with David Friedberg of The Climate Corporation to talk about building a business around big data and machine learning. The Climate Corporation collects data and tracks weather patterns on a field by field level to aid farmers in better planning agricultural operations. The company uses this data to offer insurance policies to individual farmers and agricultural businesses whose income is almost entirely dependent on weather.
Microsoft: Internet Explorer 10 Is The Most Energy-Efficient Browser, Uses Up To 18% Less Power Than Chrome And Firefox
Jun 05, 6:57PM
If everybody switched from Chrome and Firefox to Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8, we could save enough energy to power 10,000 U.S. households, a new study (PDF) commissioned by Microsoft says. The reason for this, Microsoft says, is its focus on making IE fast and the fact that IE taps into modern PC hardware like native graphics cards to speed up its rendering performance.
Amazon Resurrects The Kindle DX, That Most Awkward Cousin Of A Device Family On The Way Out
Jun 05, 6:33PM
Amazon has made official the return of a device many thought was bound for the e-reader graveyard, the Kindle DX. The DX is Amazon's big-screen reader, with a 9.7-inch e-ink display and a full keyboard at the bottom. It's almost comically oversized compared to the more popular and current e-reader models, which include the Kobo Aura HD and Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, and the technology within is now almost three years old.

Google Backtracks On Its CalDAV API "Spring Cleaning" And Launches CardDAV API
Jun 05, 5:00PM
All Google wants to talk about this week are APIs, it seems, but today's announcement that it is not making the CalDAV API partner-only, as it announced during one of its latest "spring cleaning" purges earlier this year, definitely comes as a bit of a surprise. Later this year, the CalDav API, which allows developers to access calendar data, was scheduled to become unavailable for developers who weren't part of a select list of whitelisted companies (Microsoft, which needs it to power its Windows Phone calendar syncing with Google, was one of these companies, by the way).

With New Extension, Google Allows Businesses To Add Images To Their Search Ads
Jun 05, 4:37PM
Google just announced the beta launch of a new capability for the businesses that advertise alongside its search results — the ability to include images. While the company offers a variety of ad formats across its networks and properties, its search ads have remained text-only until now. Earlier search ad extensions allowed businesses to include things like more links, an address or a phone number.
Developer Auction Begins Offering Free Intern Placement, Tests Expanding To Designers As It Pushes To Change Recruiting
Jun 05, 4:30PM
Developer Auction, the startup that flips recruiting on its head by allowing engineers to put themselves up for bidding from companies in need of talent, is expanding its service to intern placement and experimenting with expanding into auctions for designers. Mickiewicz says Developer Auction has seen "tremendous demand" from UX and UI designers and will hold an auction of designers on June 15th.
Airbnb Commits To Fighting New York Regulators In Nigel Warren Case
Jun 05, 4:08PM
Airbnb is taking the offensive in the fight against regulators, providing legal support for Nigel Warren, a host who recently was fined $2,400 by an administrative law judge. The company, which provides a peer-to-peer marketplace for people to make their homes available to rent to others, says it is committed to fight the ruling "until justice is done."
