Brad Feld Is Looking For Founders To Live And Work Rent-Free In His New Kansas City 'Fiberhouse'

Feb 13, 7:54PM

fiberhouseBrad Feld, the Boulder, Colorado-based entrepreneur and early stage investor, is well known for helping to jump start new tech and entrepreneurial ecosystems in areas outside of the well-trodden Silicon Valley region. The most recent place on which he's set his sights? Kansas City. The Kansas City metropolitan area (which spans both the states of Kansas and Missouri) is of course home to the first implementation of the Google Fiber Internet service provider project, which purportedly brings TV and Internet service that's 100 times faster than what Americans typically have today thanks to a 1-gigabit fiber optic cable installation. Google began rolling out Fiber in Kansas City late last year. This obviously gives Kansas City a big boost in its potential to be the home for new startups.

InstaThis Prints Out Your Instagram Photos On Wood Or Acrylic

Feb 13, 7:36PM

Screen Shot 2013-02-13 at 2.29.39 PMPrinting out your Instagram photos isn't all that revolutionary. We've seen countless companies do this: CanvasPop puts your Instagrams on Canvas, Printstagram turns them into calendars, minibooks, and stickers, while Kanvess will hook you up with 3x3-inch Instagram prints for 25 cents a pop. But a new service called InstaThis is taking it to a whole new level, letting users print their Instagram photos onto either wood or acrylic. "There's a bit more craftsmanship in what we do," said founder Nate Larkin.

Autodesk Releases 123D Creature, A Tool To Design, Paint, And Print Your Own 3D Monsters

Feb 13, 7:08PM

photoAs a fan of monsters and 3D printing, in that order, I was intrigued by Autodesk's new iOS app, 123D Creature. Aimed at beginning 3D modelers, the app allows you to build cute (or scary) monsters right on your screen by pinching, grabbing, and rotating a lump of virtual clay hanging on a skeleton.

Twitter's Crashlytics Enterprise Features Are Now Available To All Developers For Free

Feb 13, 6:18PM

665300179_f10e561d50_zTwitter surprised some folks when it acquired a mobile analytics firm called Crashlytics, but it’s clear that Twitter has an idea of what it would like to do with the firm. Step one since acquiring the company is opening up all of its enterprise features to developers for free, with no limits. Here’s what the company posted on its developer blog: You may know that a couple weeks ago, Twitter acquired Crashlytics, a mobile crash reporting solution. Today, we thought mobile developers would like to know that Crashlytics is folding its Enterprise features into its main product. This means that developers can now use Crashlytics with no usage costs or limits. Here at Twitter, we love using Crashlytics for mobile crash reporting, and we think that you will too. You can read more about their announcement on their blog. On the Crashlytics blog, the team goes into more detail on what’s changing for the better for developers using its free offerings: With Crashlytics Enterprise, there are no usage costs, fees, or limits when it comes to your app's performance monitoring. The features and usage we used to charge for based on limits are now unlimited across the board. This means that you no longer need to worry about numbers like monthly active users, disk space or API limits. And since Crashlytics Enterprise has no limits, you can add as many apps and developer seats as your team needs. In the future, all new Crashlytics accounts will be automatically upgraded to the unlimited, free version of the product; existing users have already been transitioned. And the capabilities of Crashlytics Enterprise don't stop here. Working with Twitter, we'll continue to develop new features even faster. The service allows companies to get real-time analytics for their mobile apps, which is something that has benefited Twitter’s own app and userbase quite a bit. Pouring through crash data is time-consuming and by acquiring Crashlytics, Twitter has helped its project flow for itself as well as others. Crashlytics says that it can process crash information in 18 milliseconds. That allows companies to make decisions on the fly. Opening up its feature set to developers is an added bonus. The biggest apps using the analytics suite are Twitter, Vine, Yelp, Kayak, TaskRabbit, Walmart, Groupon and Waze. It’s nice to see that this acquisition didn’t drift off into the ether, which doesn’t appear to be how Twitter handles

Feb 13, 6:06PM

weevOn June 14th, 2010, Michael Arrington awarded a Crunchie to two members of Goatse Security via a blog post for discovering, publishing and trying to fix a pretty egregious security flaw that they discovered on AT&T's public website. Before going to jail, Andrew Auernheimer's (aka "weev") bucket list of what he wanted was the Crunchie that TechCrunch awarded to him.

Leanplum Raises $825K Angel Round For Its Mobile A/B Testing And Optimization Tool

Feb 13, 5:01PM

leanplum_logoLeanplum, a TechStars Seattle 2012 alum that wants to make A/B testing easier on iOS and Android, just announced that it has closed an $825,000 angel round from TechStars, Kima Ventures, VoiVoda Ventures, and several "high-profile individuals." The service, which was founded by ex-Google employees Momchil Kyurkchiev and Andrew First, allows developers, product teams and product managers to optimize their apps in real time. Leanplum is still in private beta and the team remains relatively tight-lipped about how who its beta testers are and how exactly the service works, but the idea here is to give developers the tools to understand how small changes in their apps affect how users interact with it.

Khosla-Backed Hampton Creek Foods Launches Beyond Eggs, A Genuinely Convincing Egg Replacer

Feb 13, 5:00PM

hampton creek foodsJosh Tetrick, founder and CEO of Hampton Creek Foods, isn't the first person to try to convince people to eat fewer animal products (after all, someone manufactured the Tofurky that I eat every Thanksgiving), but he's not satisfied with what's already out there. "Let's face it, a lot of vegans have low standards," Tetrick said — and he's a vegan himself. His point: There are plenty of meat and animal product substitutes available, but people usually eat them because they're vegan/vegetarian, not because the food is particularly good. Tetrick, on the other hand, is hoping to create plant-based foods that are actually better than the animal products they replace. And his company just launched its first product, Beyond Eggs.

AOptix Lands DoD Contract To Turn Smartphones Into Biometric Data-Gathering Tools

Feb 13, 4:44PM

aoptixSmartphones may be invading pockets and purses across the world, but AOptix may soon bring those mobile devices to some far-flung warzones. The Campbell, Calif.-based company announced earlier today that it (along with government-centric IT partner CACI) nabbed a $3 million research contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to bring its "Smart Mobile Identity" concept to fruition.

Firebase Opens Its Real-Time App Infrastructure To All Developers

Feb 13, 4:39PM

firebase-logoWhen Y Combinator-backed Firebase first announced its app infrastructure service last April, it saw 4,000 developer sign-ups in the first week and raised a $1.1 million round shortly afterwards. Since then, co-founder James Tamplin said the company has been quietly bringing on more developers and improving the technology — and today it's launching its public beta, giving any interested developer access to the service. Firebase grew out of the chat service Envolve. Tamplin told me last year that he realized there's a bigger opportunity in making the real-time infrastructure used by apps like Envolve available to all developers, so they can "build apps really, really fast without worrying about servers or writing server code."

GroupTalent Grabs $1M From Founders Co-Op, Menlo & Others To Help Businesses Connect With Top Technical Talent

Feb 13, 4:30PM

Screen shot 2013-02-13 at 5.45.15 AMToday, it seems that everyone you know has their own startup. While this might be good for the economy long-term, it also has the makings of a talent drain. As more and more startups hit the scene, companies find themselves in a war for talent -- especially of the technical variety -- making it seemingly impossible to secure those top engineers, designers and data scientists. GroupTalent launched in December 2011 to help provide a solution. To help simplify the job search for the technically proficient (and the companies that want to hire them), GroupTalent has developed a matching engine that automatically pairs talent with relevant projects, and vice versa.

A Digital Guide To A Sexy Valentine's Day

Feb 13, 4:24PM

valentine-phoneDepending on where you're at in life, Valentine's Day can be one of the best or worst days of the year. If you're with someone, then just go ahead and tick off February 14th as one of those obligatory gift days alongside birthday, christmas, and anniversary. However, the chances that you'll have a nice meal, a stiff drink, and get laid are quite high, so that's a plus. On the other hand, if you're alone, be prepared for a lot of pink, red, white and flowers being delivered to your co-workers and a pinching sense of loneliness that only shows its face once a year.

Feb 13, 4:01PM

Skype PictureMicrosoft-owned Skype is rolling out updates today to both its Mac and Windows desktop applications, which introduce the ability for Skype users to send each other gifts in the form of Skype credit Gift Cards. Incubated By Siri Birthplace SRI, Tempo Launches A Calendar App With The Info You Need For Any Meeting

Feb 13, 4:00PM

tempo screenshotEven if you're not as laughably disorganized as I am, I'm guessing you've had a few of those "oh, crap" moments before a meeting or a phone call. You've sat there desperately trying to remember why you're meeting with someone, or the exact address that you're supposed to drive to, or some other important piece of information. A new startup called Tempo aims to eliminate those situations with a smart calendar app launching today. The company spun out from SRI International, the research institute that also incubated the voice-powered assistant Siri (which was acquired by Apple and is now a key part of the iPhone). Like  other recent SRI projects, Tempo is type of personal assistant, but of a very different sort than Siri.
