Cruel Irony: Egypt's Morsi Announces Protester Crackdown Over Twitter

In an ironic twist of fate, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has threatened military force against thousands of student protesters through one of the very mediums used to liberate the country in 2011: Twitter. "Security forces will deal with the utmost decisiveness to law enforcement and the protection of state enterprises," tweeted the official account, through a string of 1984-ish updates. "Presidency confirms that these destructive practices that have nothing to do with the principles of the revolution and not to any illegal practices in the peaceful expression." (Google Chrome translation from Arabic).
Social TV Startup Dijit Buys Miso To Re-Define The Second Screen

When rumors come true! Two weeks ago we reported on a tip that social TV startup Dijit, maker of the NextGuide iPad app, was in the process of acquiring quasi-competitor Miso. The deal took a little bit longer than we expected to actually get done, but the companies are announcing this morning that the tie-up is complete.
Gigya Says Its Social Tools Reach 1.5B Users Each Month, Making 'Tens Of Millions' In Annual Sales

"Social infrastructure" provider Gigya released some data this morning that highlights its growth over the past year. The biggest number? The 1.5 billion unique users reached by Gigya's tools each month, up from 1 billion a year ago. To have that kind of reach, Gigya presumably needs big clients, and the company says new customers added last year include Wal-Mart, DirectTV, RedBox, Beats Electronics, Pacific Sunwear, American Heart Association, Jelly Belly, Barneys New York, Bad Boy Marketing Group, Adidas, Food Network, AlItalia, and Lush Cosmetics. The company says it now has 650 clients total, including 50 percent of the comScore's top 100 US web properties.
Apple Takes 3 Of Top 5 Spots In U.S. Mobile Phone Sales For Q4 2012, Says NPD

Apple has managed to nab three of the top 5 spots for the top-selling mobile phones in the U.S. during Q4 2012 according to the NPD group, with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 ranking first, third and fourth respectively. Apple also retained the crown for best-selling overall smartphone maker, accounting for 39 percent of smartphone sales in Q4 2012, compared to Samsung's 30 percent.

Google Maps just won Best Mobile App at the Crunchies 2012 and Daniel Graff, Google's director of Google Maps for mobile talked to our own Colleen Taylor after accepting the award. In the interview, Graff noted that it was a unique opportunity for him and his team to start from scratch. Looking ahead, Graff stressed that the next frontier for maps will be about personalization.

Sesame, the recently launched mobile gifting app from Sincerely, a company known for its mobile photo postcard and greeting card applications, is now web-friendly with the debut of the Sesame online store. Like its app-based counterpart, the web store will allow users to browse through the various gift boxes for sale, including the trio of new additions for Valentine's Day, then purchase and send them without the need to install an app on their phone.
Gravity Fully Launches Its Content Personalization Tools, Making Them Available To Any Publisher

A little more than three years after the company was first announced, personalization startup Gravity is doing a big launch today, opening up its suite of APIs so that they're available to any publisher who wants to use them. Founded by a trio of former Myspace executives, Gravity has created an "interest graph" mapping different topics, which it then uses to recommend different content to users based on their activity on a given site. As the technology becomes better-acquainted with each visitor, the recommendations should improve.

Mobile Phone Network Truphone Raises $118M Led By Russian Tycoon Roman Abramovich, At $473M Valuation

Truphone, a UK-based mobile network that lets its users make free or low-cost calls to other mobile devices, has today announced a large funding injection of £75 million ($118 million) from a group of investors led by Roman Abramovich, the wealthy Russian owner of Chelsea Football Club, among other things. Abramovich's investment company Minden accounted for £70 million of this investment, giving it a 23.3% stake in the company at a £300 million ($473 million) valuation.

Google Submits Proposals To EU Antitrust Regulator To Allay Biased Search Concerns

A European Union antitrust investigation into Google, launched in November 2010, is still ongoing but Google has now submitted detailed proposals to the EU's competition commissioner, JoaquÃn Almunia, according to Reuters. The EU has the power to levy a fine of up to 10 per cent of a company's annual turnover if they are found to have breached its rules.

BlackBerry, the Canadian smartphone maker formerly known as RIM -- aka Research In Motion -- will start trading under its new name on February 4, with its new ticker symbols effective from the start of trading on that day. BlackBerry said it will trade as BBRY on the Nasdaq, and as BB on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Apple took the title of largest mobile maker by volume in the U.S. in Q4 2012, according to Strategy Analytics, which said Cupertino rose to the top of the U.S. phone maker charts for the first time ever -- taking a record 34 per cent marketshare, and shipping 17.7 million iPhones in the quarter. Samsung came second, with a 32.3 per cent share, shipping an estimated 16.8 million smartphones.
FTC Chair Announces Resignation One Month After Settling Google Antitrust Case

FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz announced on Thursday that he will resign, one month after the agency reached a settlement with Google after a 20-month investigation into the tech giant's alleged anticompetitive behavior. The resignation had been expected by antitrust lawyers since last summer and will take effect in mid-February. Leibowitz said that he plans to move to the private sector and will likely focus on competition policy and privacy.
