mocanaMocana has raised $25 million in new funding from Trident Capital for mobile app and smart security solutions.  The Series D round gives Mocana $47 million in total investment. Mocana's goal is to be the next major global security franchise - a market estimated at $3 to $5 billion in size. Mocana executives see two major business markets evolving in the enterprise market. There is the need  to protect mobile devices. And separately is the market to protect apps and the data on them.


Applifier's Everyplay, Which Lets Mobile Gamers Share Glory, Attracts Interest From 100 Developers

everyplay-screenshot1Applifier, a Helsinki and San Francisco-based mobile-social gaming network, added a lot more richness to its user experience this week with Everyplay, a way for gamers to share and replay their greatest moments. Everyplay lets gamers share their favorite titles by recording and replaying sessions of games -- like a time they might have gotten a high score. The company, which is backed by $2 million from MHS Capital, Profounders, Tekes and Lifeline Ventures, says it has racked up interest from about 100 developers in the Everyplay beta so far this week.


Stripe's Capture The Flag 2.0 — A Hands On Contest For App Developers To Test Their Security Know-How

ctf20Online payment company Stripe launched a very cool online contest today that plays off the computer security world's well-known war game: Capture the Flag. In Stripe's version, app developers discover and try to exploit vulnerabilities in mock web apps. The contest launched at noon today and in the first six hours 4,500 people signed up. The contest will be live for a week. After that, the company plans to release the source code so people can analyze or run it themselves.

Twitter did the same thing to Instagram last month. Samsung Invests $4 Billion in Austin To Produce iPhone And iPad Chips

Samsung AustinSamsung announced that it is investing $4 billion in its Austin plant in order to expand the production capacity of processors for mobile devices. Trial or not, Samsung's most important client for those chips is still Apple. The factory already manufactures flash memory chips and the Apple-designed A5, which debuted with the iPad 2 and was improved with the iPad 3. The sum will be used to retrofit the existing installations and to entirely devote the production lines to system chips. It represents the largest foreign investment in Texas of all time. Mass production will begin in the second half of 2013.


Facebook's Instagram Acquisition Greenlit, Now Worth $747 Million Down From $1 Billion

Currently the deal is worth $747 million, with $300 million in cash plus $447 million in stock based on 22,999,412 shares of Facebook at today's $19.44 share price. That's a lot less than nearly $1 billion when the deal first was signed based on the $30 share price at the time, or the $1.14 billion expected from Facebook's $38 IPO price. New App Detects Lies From Political Ads

super_pac_app_largeDeep pocketed political donors are out in full force spreading lies about political candidates. Now, a new app, the Super PAC App, will fact check ads on-the-fly. Much like multi-media tagging apps can identify songs and television episodes through a recording, users hold up their iPhone during a commercial and the Super Pac app will identify the donors and how factually accurate an ad's accusations are. The app was co-created by former MIT Media Lab student, Dan Siegal, with support from the Knight Foundation.


Vancouver's Growlab Accelerator Graduates Its Spring 2012 Cohort

Growlab_Logo600Vancouver's up-and-coming Growlab accelerator is hosting its demo day for its spring 2012 cohort today. The program was founded in 2011 and focuses on consumer internet, social gaming, mobile and cloud services. Growlab currently runs two four-month programs per year and funds up to five companies with $25,000 per session. Companies that are accepted into the program also have a chance of getting $150,000 in follow-up funding from Growlab and BDC Venture Capital, one of Canada's larger VC firms.


HP Reports 3Q Earnings Down 5% – Printers Off 23%

HPHP has reported third quarter earnings are down 5% compared to last year. Printer sales were down 23%, mirroring trends across the market. Revenues were $29.7 billion, down from $31.2 billion. HP's earnings per share came in at $1.00, above the previously provided outlook of 94 to 94 cents per share and in line with its pre-announcements. EPS, though was down 9% from the prior-year period. Like Dell's results yesterday, HP showed its steepest declines in its consumer products with revenue off 13% year over year for hardware and printer units down 23%,


Kayak First Post-IPO Earnings: $76.9 Million Sales Beats Expectations

kayak-1Online travel search engine Kayak today posted its financial results for the second quarter of 2012, its first earnings report as a public company since its well-received initial public offering last month. Kayak pulled in $76.9 million in revenue during Q2, up 36 percent year-over-year from its Q2 2011 sales. Its adjusted EBITDA was $20.6 million, an 85 percent boost from Q2 2011. Its Q2 net income saw the biggest spike year-over-year, at $7.3 million, a 93 percent jump from Q2 2011, representing earnings per share of 19 cents. Its income from operations was $15.75 million.

According to economic think tank, The Milken Institute, a country the size of America will add 4.2 million Spanx-wearing citizens for a 10% growth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). "The main culprit is the knowledge-based society," states the report, "more processed foods, a greater amount of 'screen' time (watching TV, using computers, playing video games, etc.), decreased energy expenditure, and/or higher consumption of snack foods have all played a role."


How Big Is Facebook's Data? 2.5 Billion Pieces Of Content And 500+ Terabytes Ingested Every Day

Facebook Big Data NumbersFacebook revealed some big, big stats on big data to a few reporters at its HQ today, including that its system processes 2.5 billion pieces of content and 500+ terabytes of data each day. It's pulling in 2.7 billion Like actions and 300 million photos per day, and it scans roughly 105 terabytes of data each half hour. Plus it gave the first details on its new "Project Prism". VP of Engineering Jay Parikh explained why this is so important to Facebook: "Big data really is about having insights and making an impact on your business. If you aren't taking advantage of the data you're collecting, then you just have a pile of data, you don't have big data." By processing data within minutes, Facebook can rollout out new products, understand user reactions, and modify designs in near real-time.
