Mocana's goal is to be the next major global security franchise - a market estimated at $3 to $5 billion in size. Mocana executives see two major business markets evolving in the enterprise market. There is the need to protect mobile devices. And separately is the market to protect apps and the data on them.

Applifier, a Helsinki and San Francisco-based mobile-social gaming network, added a lot more richness to its user experience this week with Everyplay, a way for gamers to share and replay their greatest moments. Everyplay lets gamers share their favorite titles by recording and replaying sessions of games -- like a time they might have gotten a high score. The company, which is backed by $2 million from MHS Capital, Profounders, Tekes and Lifeline Ventures, says it has racked up interest from about 100 developers in the Everyplay beta so far this week.

Evidence from
Facebook and Instagram plus analysis from outside experts has convinced the Federal Trade Commission to today
approve the landmark acquisition. After four months of investigation, it's also
revealed why. The FTC cites that Camera+ and other competitors dwarf Facebook's standalone Camera app, Instagram has no revenue and limited ways to earn any, and that Google's ad business and social network will be stiff competition for Facebook even if it owns Instagram. Here's the breakdown of how Zuck got his way in 5-0 FTC vote for Facestagram.

Twitter isn't done with its efforts to take tighter control of its API — now Tumblr users can no longer search for their Twitter friends when they sign up on the microblogging service. Twitter
did the same thing to Instagram last month. And last week, it announced
new restrictions to its API, which will
make things especially tough for developers building consumer apps that compete with Twitter's.

The jury is still out --
literally -- on the
Apple v. Samsung court case, in which Apple has accused Samsung of copying the iPhone and the iPad designs with its Android-powered mobile devices. While we wait for the verdict to come in (some experts say the jury's deliberations could very well end before this week is up) to shed a bit of light on what's at stake here we talked to
Christopher Marlett, the founder and CEO of
MDB Capital, a Los Angeles-based investment bank that focuses on intellectual property.

The market for high quality wireless speakers is relatively small. Consider the fact that Sonos and Jawbone have grabbed most of the headlines and buzz over the last few years with creative and attractive hardware design. Relative newcomer Audyssey has made waves since last year with a
uniquely designed set of speakers and an AirPlay dock. Their latest, simply dubbed
Wireless Speakers house Bluetooth connectivity and redesigned components for a thumping set of uniquely designed speaker boxes. But do you really need a set of $299 (they will likely sell for $250 when they hit the street on 8/29) Bluetooth speakers?

Samsung announced that it is investing $4 billion in its Austin plant in order to expand the production capacity of processors for mobile devices.
Trial or not, Samsung's most important client for those chips is still Apple. The factory already manufactures flash memory chips and the Apple-designed A5, which debuted with the iPad 2 and was improved with the iPad 3. The sum will be used to retrofit the existing installations and
to entirely devote the production lines to system chips. It represents the largest foreign investment in Texas of all time. Mass production will begin in the second half of 2013.

More than four months after the
deal was announced, the Federal Trade Commission has
closed its investigation of Facebook's acquisition of Instagram and the deal may proceed. Currently the deal is worth $747 million, with $300 million in cash plus $447 million in stock based on 22,999,412 shares of Facebook at today's $19.44 share price. That's a lot less than nearly $1 billion when the deal first was signed based on the $30 share price at the time, or the $1.14 billion expected from Facebook's $38 IPO price. Here's our breakdown of why the FTC approved the deal and what happens next...

Deep pocketed political donors are out in full force spreading lies about political candidates. Now,
a new app, the
Super PAC App, will fact check ads on-the-fly. Much like multi-media tagging apps can identify songs and television episodes
through a recording, users hold up their iPhone during a commercial and the Super Pac app will identify the donors and how factually accurate an ad's accusations are. The app was co-created by former MIT Media Lab student, Dan Siegal, with support from the Knight Foundation.

The world has paid for the luxury of Angry Birds with its health and looks: a new report finds a strong link between technological advancement and expanding waistlines.
According to economic think tank, The Milken Institute, a country the size of America will add 4.2 million
Spanx-wearing citizens for a 10% growth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). "The main culprit is the knowledge-based society," states the report, "more processed foods, a greater amount of 'screen' time (watching TV, using computers, playing video games, etc.), decreased energy expenditure, and/or higher consumption of snack foods have all played a role."

Facebook revealed some big, big stats on
big data to a few reporters at its HQ today, including that its system processes 2.5 billion pieces of content and 500+ terabytes of data each day. It's pulling in 2.7 billion Like actions and 300 million photos per day, and it scans roughly 105 terabytes of data each half hour. Plus it gave the first details on its new "Project Prism". VP of Engineering Jay Parikh explained why this is so important to Facebook: "Big data really is about having insights and making an impact on your business. If you aren't taking advantage of the data you're collecting, then you just have a pile of data, you don't have big data." By processing data within minutes, Facebook can rollout out new products, understand user reactions, and modify designs in near real-time.
