In Case Anyone Cares, Here Are A Bunch Of Early Samsung Slider Concept Designs
Aug 02, 2:09AM
Samsung and Apple are currently fighting over rectangles and retail packaging. The legal battle is a classic CF, but the process has yielded a treasure trove of early Apple product designs. So far court documents have revealed early iPhone and iPad designs. Some models have kickstands, others are inspired by Sony -- all pretty interesting. But today is Samsung's turn with freshly-minted court documents revealing some early feature phone concept designs. And you know what? Samsung's early designs are lame.
Social Media Manager Buffer Opens API To Developers, Looks To Become "Widespread Sharing Standard"
Aug 02, 1:08AM
Buffer, a social media manager that aims to become a "widespread sharing standard," opened its API to developers today. Buffer lets users post to their Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts (Google+ isn't as lenient with its API) and offers the usual array of analytic feedback. However, its focus on non-original content sharing, especially photos, videos and articles, and individual users differentiates it from a crowded market.

Crack journalism is coming to the land of cat and Justin Bieber videos: YouTube is helping to launch a new channel with the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIR). The new "I Files" channel will curate videos from sources such as The New York Times and Al Jazeera, in a attempt to bring some much needed attention to the fledgling investigative journalism space and bolster YouTube's multi-million dollar foray into professional content. An $800,000 grant from the Knight foundation is seeding the channel, which will share revenue with its content partners.
Howard Lindzon On Why He Sold His Twitter Stock, And The 'Hijack' Of StockTwits' Cashtags [TCTV]
Aug 02, 12:49AM
Twitter has been dominating headlines in the tech blogosphere and beyond in recent days, and for the most part the tone has not been glowing. Specifically, the company seems to be making more aggressive steps toward controlling its API, which could have quite negative effects for the independent startups that have built their businesses around the microblogging service. One of these examples has played out with StockTwits, the stock market and investment information service headed up by longtime finance and tech industry player Howard Lindzon.

Aug 02, 12:37AM
A developer known by the nickname of welder has just released CLMapper, a Chrome extension reminiscent of PadMapper. When that extension is installed, you will find a map view on the right side while browsing apartment and housing postings on Craigslist. In other words, the developer found a workaround to provide the PadMapper experience without the legal issues that have been troubling the service lately.
Facebook's Justin Osofsky Rises To Director Of Platform Partnerships As Ethan Beard Heads Out
Aug 02, 12:19AM
Facebook keeps its network tight. Today it promoted Justin Osofsky to director of platform partnerships and operations, taking the spot of Ethan Beard who is departing after leading the partnerships team along with Dan Rose since 2008. Director of platform marketing Katie Mitic also announced she was leaving today, and mobile platform marketing manager Jonathan Matus stepped down last week. Along with Sheryl Sandberg's addition to the board of directors, and long-time Facebook engineers Mike Vernal and Cory Ondrejka taking on former CTO Bret Taylor's role, the message is clear that while some talent may be draining away post-IPO, Facebook prefers new leaders who've been steeped in its open and connected philosophy.

Splurgy Now Lets Brands Offer Special Discounts & Promotions To Pinterest Pinners
Aug 01, 11:16PM
Pinterest has been growing fast and furiously, and as a result, many retailers have been rushing to add "Pin It" buttons to their social sharing options. A few months back, flash sales giant Gilt City got some buzz for becoming one of the first to incentivize "pinning," allowing users to unlock special deals on Gilt by re-pinning certain items. In other words, after a product was pinned, say, 50 times, the pin would link to a hidden sale on Gilt where users could purchase that special, discounted item. Gilt's clever move was further evidence that retailers are starting to understand the inherent value of Pinterest as a marketing platform. Seeing a growing demand among brands for better ways to incentivize their users to socially engage with their products (especially via Pinterest), Splurgy is today releasing a tool that allows brands to do just that.
Kevin Rose Responds To Reddit AMA: Biggest Digg Regrets, Thoughts On New Digg, More [Video]
Aug 01, 9:46PM
Last night, I wrote about Kevin Rose not responding to questions on his AMA on Reddit. Rose was at a birthday party last night but has returned to Reddit today and has posted YouTube responses to five Redditers' questions. After all the coverage on Digg's sale and Rose personally a few weeks ago and now on the launch of new Digg, it's very interesting to hear Rose's thoughts. He does a good job going in-depth in his responses, and seems pretty open. Here are the responses.
App.net's Dalton Caldwell Turned Down A Facebook Acqui-Hire Offer Before Rebooting His Company
Aug 01, 9:27PM
So here's the real story behind App.net founder Dalton Caldwell's plans to build a new, open API framework for developers to build off of. According to him, Facebook pressured him into selling his company, rather than compete with the social network's newly released App Center. In an open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted to his blog on Wednesday, Caldwell recounted his side of a meeting with Facebook's developer relations team, which occurred in mid-June. Prior to the meeting, App.net was working on a mobile app that would let users see which apps their friends were using, and make suggestions about new apps to download. It used Facebook Connect and Facebook Open Graph to identify interesting apps and to share them with social connections, and Caldwell hoped to get "executive-level support" for his upcoming product launch.

Stoppelman also said that apps currently account for 40 percent of all Yelp searches — making up the majority on weekends.

Using adjustable brackets, the BackPack can mount on the front or back of the unit, added a nice shelf to hold an iPhone, external hard drive, or your Troll Doll collection.
Can A YC, Mobile-Rookie Founder Crack The Image Sharing Space With Imgfave?
Aug 01, 8:05PM
Popular image-sharing service imgfave launched an iOS app last week, causing most of their engagement metrics to at least double, and signups to quadruple. Underscoring the power of both mobile and social right now, imgfave's app reached the same level of activity as the main website, which gets 30 million monthly page views and 3.3 million monthly unique visitors, just two days after it launched, according to the founder, Gabe Ragland.
Y Combinator-Backed Instacart Wants To Be Amazon With One-Hour Delivery
Aug 01, 8:00PM
When it comes to being the Mall of the Internet, no one really does it better than Amazon. Yet, to truly best its offline competitors and put the icing on the cake in terms of user experience, Amazon has been pushing hard to offer same-day delivery for all items purchased within its virtual walls. However, Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak said last week during the company's second quarter earnings call that it "doesn't see a way to do same-day delivery on a broad scale, economically." In the meantime, one startup wants to pick up Amazon's slack and offer not just same-day delivery, but one-hour delivery. And naturally, it's a product of one of their own. Founded in early June, Instacart is the brainchild of Apoorva Mehta, an ex-Amazon Supply Chain engineer, who is leveraging his experience building Amazon's own complex backend logistical systems in the hopes of creating a more efficient back and front-end grocery delivery experience at Instacart.

Rumor: Google Puts A Hold On New Google+ Acquisitions
Aug 01, 7:16PM
According to a source close to Google, the company has put a stop to all acquisitions related to Google+ until at least the end of the year. This source also tells us that Google is not growing the Google+ right now and not providing the team with any additional resources until the end of the year. The Google+ project itself is not on hold, but if this rumor is indeed correct and Google is cutting back on expanding the team's resources, this could be an indication that Google+ isn't doing quite as well as the company's public comments would indicate.
This Is Medium, Obvious Corp's Secret New Product
Aug 01, 7:15PM
When Evan Williams and a bunch of other Obvious Corp teammates suddenly follow a snazzy, un-launched product called Medium, you know something big's about to happen. For now, Medium.com is a website that lets you easily drag in or upload a photo and annotate it with overlaid text, but we hear there are bigger ambitions for the product. Medium's Twitter account describes it as "The new thing", and its only tweet is "Getting antsy", which was posted last night and seems to foreshadow an imminent launch. We couldn't find other details, but Medium's placeholder product lets anyone combine an image and quote to quickly get a point across. That doesn't seem world-changing enough for Obvious, though, so expect it to reveal something much grander.
