Twitter's All Like "We Don't Need You LinkedIn," But Still Bends Over Backwards For Facebook

Jun 30, 1:55AM

Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 6.21.38 PMNothing is more fascinating than the tech platform API wars because they are so, so similar to high school, once a company feels it's too cool for another company, it starts shutting off parts of its API to that company, like what happened here with Facebook and Google. It's basically one of those big, swinging dick types of things, that I, as a female, don't entirely understand.

Unmetric Scores The Virality Of Brands' YouTube Campaigns

Jun 30, 12:28AM

unmetric logoSocial benchmarking startup Unmetric just expanded its tools to include YouTube, giving brands a new way to measure the effectiveness of their video campaigns. Of course, companies can already see plenty of stats about their videos — views, likes, and more. But Unmetric tries to synthesize all that data into a single score, and then shows how that score stacks up against competitors.

Alexia's Headphones: How We Used CrowdTilt's Group-Funding Platform To Replace Stolen Property

Jun 29, 11:11PM

Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 9.51.53 AMOn the 25th of June, our dearest Alexia Tsotsis had an incredibly rough day. First, her car was looted by very bad people in San Francisco, who stole her laptop and a pair of excellent Bose headphones that were near and dear to her heart. And as if that wasn't enough, her car then got smashed by someone running a red light, totaling her vehicle and leaving her in quite a bit of pain. When fellow TechCrunch sharks heard the news, we knew we had to do something to help out one of our fearless leaders, and so our very own Ryan Lawler stepped up to the plate with a suggestion to buy some new headphones for Alexia. "Knowing that we can't replace the sentimental value, I was thinking we could maybe (at least) help replace the item that was taken." After a little back and forth, the team settled on an app to help us accomplish the task at hand (we at TC need an app for everything), and that's where CrowdTilt enters the mix.

Paul Oakenfold On The Intersection Of Technology And Music [TCTV]

Jun 29, 10:44PM

Screen Shot 2012-06-29 at 3.37.14 PMPaul Oakenfold, the world-renowned electronic music producer and DJ, has seen a lot of change in the industry since his career began more than 25 years ago. And perhaps the biggest shifts have come from technology -- from the way music is made, to how it's distributed, to where and how people listen to it, to how artists become known and signed to labels, to the tools DJs use in clubs to spin records. So it was really amazing to have Oakenfold swing by the TechCrunch TV studios while he was in San Francisco this week...

Fashion-Focused Blog Aggregator Bloglovin Raises $1M From Betaworks And Others

Jun 29, 9:50PM

bloglovin_printscreenBloglovin, a startup that has been compared to Tumblr and RSS, has just raised a $1 million Series A. The company bills itself as a fun, simple way to follow all the fashion blogs that interest you. Like RSS, you can sign up to read updates from any blog (not just the ones on a single platform or content management system), and like Tumblr, there's an emphasis on high-quality visuals and community. Bloglovin even held a fashion awards ceremony in New York earlier this year.

Facebook's First Public Earnings, Q2 2012, Scheduled For July 26th

Jun 29, 9:04PM

Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 2.05.53 PMFacebook will give investors and the world their first official look at its post-IPO earning for Q2 2012 at 2pm PST on July 26th, according to a brief note posted to its investor relations page just now. There's been no indication of whether CEO Mark Zuckerberg will participate in an earnings call or if more business focused execs COO Sheryl Sandberg and CFO David Ebersman will be the ones fielding questions. The company pulled in $1.058 billion in Q1 2012 revenue with a net income of $205 million. Critics will want to see both of those increase and will likely focus on its mobile revenue. Facebook only began showing ads on mobile at the end of February, but monetizing the medium is believed to be the linchpin of Facebook's future success.

AgLocal Raises $1 Million From Andreessen Horowitz & Others To Enable Sustainable Meat Production

Jun 29, 8:44PM

aglocalAgLocal, a startup that's using the power of the Internet to disrupt how animal farmers connect with meat buyers and distributors, has just scored $1 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Midwest VC firm OpenAir Equity Partners and other angels including John Fohr (Partner at Lux Capital), Thad Langford (former CEO of Zave Networks), Dan Carroll (founder of Leap2 and AdPredictive), Andy O'Hara (Partner at Tradebot Ventures), and Matt Watson (Founder of Vin Solutions and Stackify). The additional funding will help the company build out its technology platform, hire additional engineers, and establish relationships with potential partners in advance of its late summer/fall launch planned for later this year.

Social Travel Site Gogobot Redesigns: Less Text, More Photos

Jun 29, 8:30PM

gogobotGogobot, the social travel site that recently passed the 1 million registered user mark, just launched an interesting redesign this week that turn the site's homepage into more of an interactive magazine experience with a focus on photos instead of the site's previous text-heavy design. As Gogobot's founder Travis Katz told me earlier this week, the Gogobot team noticed that its users didn't just use the service to plan their trips and update their friends, but that many of them also used the service just to browse photos. This, said Katz, became especially clear after Gogobot launched its mobile app earlier this year and allowed users to share and create virtual postcards from their trips.

Allied Electronics Is Now Accepting Orders For The Bite-Sized Raspberry Pi

Jun 29, 8:21PM

6a00d83451b2c969e20168e83761ef970c-500wiThe Raspberry Pi is a tasty little Linux computing device but it's so far been rather hard to buy. I've wanted to order one since it officially started to ship in April. However, due to the limited quantities, retailers sold out nearly immediately. Enter Allied Electronics. The Texas-based electronic distributor is now taking orders for the Raspberry Pi at the list price of $35 each with the only caveat being shipping is not for 10-12 weeks. But I'll take it!

ZURB Launches Foundation 3 To Take On Twitter's Bootstrap Framework

Jun 29, 8:10PM

zurb_foundation_3Twitter's Bootstrap gives developers an easy to use, grid-based and responsive framework for quickly designing prototypes and basic web pages, as well as production-ready interactive sites. With Foundation, product design company ZURB offers a direct competitor to Twitter's product and the company is launching version 3 of its framework. This new version, which the company just announced at Groupon's Schmonference, is significantly easier to customize and, as ZURB tells us, almost all of the CSS code has been rewritten to make it more polished and easier to restyle and modify as well. The Foundation team also rewrote some of the grid system - which is really the heart of the framework.

Grou.ps Launches LoveBucks, A New Subscription-Based Monetization Platform For Online Publishers

Jun 29, 8:00PM

Love BucksMaking money in the online content business isn't always easy, especially for publishers and bloggers who don't have a huge audience. Besides advertising, there aren't too many options for online publishers and even though it looked like micropayments would offer a solution a few years ago, they never caught on with the public. Today, Grou.ps is taking a stab at solving this problem. It's launching a new program called LoveBucks that allows users to buy a monthly subscription (starting at $2.95/month) and then users can spend this money by clicking on the LoveBucks widgets on sites that sign up for the program.

Tagstand Hits 1M Actions, Launches New Tag Writer To Bring NFC To The Mainstream

Jun 29, 7:36PM

Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 12.57.39 PMGoogle is making a serious push with NFC on Android. As we detailed last night, Android product management director Hugo Barra revealed yesterday that Google is now shipping 1 million NFC-equipped devices every week. Beyond Google Wallet, the company announced some cool new features to Android Beam at I/O on Wednesday, including giving users the option to share video through NFC or pair their phones to other NFC-enabled devices just by tapping it. Last night, Google showcased Beam's new functionality with two apps, Paper Camera and Tagstand's Task Launcher. Y Combinator-backed Tagstand, in particular, has been on a mission to make NFC more of a mainstream technology and is starting to pick up steam as a result.

YouTube And Google+ Grow Closer: All Users Can Now Switch Their Usernames To Their Google+ Profiles

Jun 29, 6:11PM

youtube-full-nameYouTube's comment section isn't exactly known for being a hotbed of in-depth intellectual conversations. One of the reasons for this, some would argue, is the fact that YouTube still lets people post comments using handles like 'cutepuppies99' without having to reveal your real identity. Starting today, however, you will have the option to use your Google-wide Google+-based identity that will show your real name (or at least the name you are using on Google+) to all YouTube users.

AdMob Founder Omar Hamoui Has A New Polling Startup, Calls It 'Maybe'

Jun 29, 5:56PM

maybe screenshot 1Can't decide what shoes to buy? Or what book to read next? AdMob founder and former CEO Omar Hamoui is launching a new startup called Maybe to help with your decision. Last month, Hamoui told me that he was leaving (and shutting down) Churn Labs, the startup generator that he founded with AdMob engineer Mike Rowehl, because he'd been lured away by one of the Churn startups. At the time, he wasn't ready to say anything about the startup in question, but now he is, because a preview version of the Maybe site just went live.

Google Pumps Up Jelly Bean's Face Unlock Feature With A New 'Liveness Check'

Jun 29, 5:39PM

livenesscheckBack when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first introduced in Hong Kong last year plenty of us jaded tech folk took a shine to its new Face Unlock feature, which allows users to unlock their devices with their front-facing cameras. Of course, we now know that it isn't terribly secure — a picture of your face was apparently good enough to fool it — but Google seems to have made Face Unlock just a bit more secure in their early Jelly Bean release.

Salon Booking Service StyleSeat Launches Offers Platform To Pull Stylists Away From Daily Deal Sites

Jun 29, 5:16PM

Welcome to StyleSeatStyleSeat, the "OpenTable for hair stylists" backed by Founders Fund, 500 Startups, Ashton Kutcher, and others (including a who's who of angel investors), is today launching a service called "New Client Offers." The platform allows salons to reach out to potential new clients by offering discounts or extra services redeemable upon their first visit. The offers will be available in the company's online marketplace where customers can also browse area salons, search for professionals based on location, speciality or price, read reviews, view photos of the stylist's work, and then book their appointments directly.

Whisk And Foodity Both Raise Funds To Link Recipes To Grocery Stores

Jun 29, 5:11PM

ikea-cookbook-recipe-ingredientsIt's been an interesting day for a developing market which seems so utterly niche as to be untrue. There really are startups out there linking recipes to supermarket so you can just buy the food you need to make the dishes. Niche, but potentially quite powerful. Two start-ups announced funding today in the UK. Whisk, a startup produced by a minor UK TV celebrity, has raised £170,000 for a product that has yet to launch, while Foodity has secured over £300,000 seed funding for a platform that's already being traded on and has customers after bootstrapping for two years.

YouTube's Next New Creator Program Is Meant To Bring In The LOLs

Jun 29, 5:00PM

youtubeOver the past year, YouTube has been busy with outreach to its community of independent creators through its YouTube Next program. The idea is to identify the next big YouTube stars and to provide them with the resources they need to improve the quality of their content, as well as help build their audiences. So far, the YouTube Next Creator program has focused on a couple of different verticals. Most recently it sought to help out vloggers, and before that worked to find talented producers of cooking and fitness videos. With that in mind, the next vertical it's focusing on is comedy.

NFC Cometh? 1M Android NFC Devices Shipping Each Week, And Prototypes Show iPhone 5 Is Next

Jun 29, 2:22AM

nfc_android_320x320Google I/O is in full swing, and news has been pouring out at a fairly steady pace: Tony Stark Sergey finally demoed Google Glass, Google Drive passed 10 million users and is available on iOS, and we all got a look at Jelly Bean -- to name a few. Yet, overshadowed and buried in lengthy liveblogs is one piece of news that deserves some more attention -- and it's all about NFC. During yeserday's keynote, Hugo Barra, the director of Android product management, revealed that Google is now shipping 1 million NFC-enabled Android devices every week. That's pretty significant.

Pivot Patrol: YC Alum SwipeGood Is Now Elastic, A Sales-As-A-Service Platform For Tech Startups

Jun 29, 12:18AM

Elastic_Logo_RGBIn early 2011 SwipeGood graduated from the winter class of top-tier startup incubator program Y Combinator, and it went on to land $500,000 in seed funding from a reputable group of angel investors. But in the months following, the company ran into a problem -- it found that it couldn't truly compete and grow the business, largely because it lacked the kind of sales force it would need to play in the big leagues. And that led co-founder and CEO Steli Efti and his co-founders Thomas Steinacher and Anthony Nemitz to an "a-ha" moment of sorts -- and soon, the company was reborn as Elastic, a sales-as-a-service platform aimed at startups.

Don't Expect A Full Read/Write Google+ API Anytime Soon, Google Doesn't Want To Disrupt Something "Magical"

Jun 29, 12:01AM

GooglePlus-redDespite the fact that Google has been slowly launching more APIs for Google+, don't expect the company to launch a full read/write API anytime soon. During a Google+ platform fireside chat at Google I/O today, Google+ VP Bradley Horowitz and other members of the Google+ team said that Google is still taking a very deliberate approach to Google+'s APIs. The company, Horowitz said, doesn't want to "disrupt something very special" and "magical" by just opening up a full read/write API that would allow developers to write apps that can easily post to Google+.

Hands On With Google's Chrome For iOS: Just Like Chrome For Android, Only Slower

Jun 28, 10:56PM

App Store - ChromeGoogle today launched Chrome for iOS and it's now available in the App Store. Don't get too excited, though. While it's a nice enough browser, it's hobbled by Apple's rules for third-part developers and doesn't feature Google's fast JavaScript rendering engine. Instead, as Google confirmed to us earlier today, it uses Apple's relatively slow UIWebView to render web pages and that sadly means the browsing experience on iOS isn't exactly optimal. Sadly, the browser feels a bit sluggish on iOS, something that obviously can't be said about Chrome on any other platform.

Fast-Growing Luxury Vacation Club Inspirato Quietly Brings In $15.5M From DAG and Millenium

Jun 28, 10:53PM

Screen Shot 2012-06-28 at 3.25.19 PMCollaborative consumption -- generally, marketplaces for buying and selling access to products and services -- have been defined recently by startups like TaskRabbit and Zaarly for tasks, or short-term rental service Airbnb. But Inspirato is bringing the concept to the luxury vacation market, driving down the cost of renting Tuscan villas, Napa cottages, and even a seaborne yacht coming next July. And it's doing well enough that it decided to raise another $15.5 million this past month from DAG Ventures and Millenium Technology Value Partners, we learned from a regulatory filing that hit this week.

Google's TV Strategy Is Doomed

Jun 28, 10:43PM

th_DoomedI feel like we're watching Google TV roll by and off into a nearby ditch. The company doesn't have much dedication to the platform and, like Apple TV, GTV is failing to gain traction. As Ryan notes, outside of a few I/O sessions, Google said very little about the Google TV project this year and I'm almost certain it means they've scrapped the project but don't want to tell their partners. They are running seminars on the platform at I/O, but until they've officially announced the closure they have to maintain appearances.

How Google Pulled Off Their Live Video Skydiving With Glasses Demo

Jun 28, 10:29PM

google skydiveGoogle won the Internet by pulling off a truly impressive Google Glass skydiving stunt, twice, during their I/O event. Skydivers in wingsuits 4,000 feet above San Francisco delivered the high tech glasses to the Moscone stage in just four minutes, with help of 25 cameras, a zeppelin and a helicopter, stunt bikers and someone repelling down the side of the convention center. The whole thing was shown on live video in a Google Hangout from the skydivers' and bikers' glasses to the surprise of developers in the audience and those watching on YouTube. This was Google's winning answer to Steve Jobs' "One More Thing" and for the moment, it made Apple's ground-based surprises seem less dramatic.

RIM Ships 7.8M Smartphones In Q1 2013, Down 30 Percent From Last Quarter's 11.1M

Jun 28, 9:29PM

sadberryIt's been a bleak call, thus far. We just heard on RIM's Q1 2013 earnings call that the Waterloo-based company only shipped 7.8 million smartphones this quarter, which is down 30 percent from 11.1 million units shipped last quarter.

GymPact Grabs $850K From Guitar Hero Founder & More To Give You Cash For Getting In Shape

Jun 28, 9:28PM

success-1It's no secret that Americans could lose a few pounds. I'm not calling them fat per se, but let's just say that Hans and Franz are pretty busy these days. In January, GymPact launched a website and iPhone app with the goal of complementing all those newfangled health data trackers, devices, and virtual training apps to incentivize couch potatoes to get up and go to the gym -- or yoga, the pool, or spin class. Today, the TechStars grad is officially announcing that it has raised $850K in seed funding led by Mike Hirshland of Resolute.vc, with contributions from the TEEC Angel Fund, Mike Dornbrook and Alex Rigopolous, the COO and co-founder of Harmonix (better known as the creators of Rock Band and Guitar Hero), Brightcove CTO Bob Mason, and others. As part of the round, TechStars Boston Managing Director Katie Rae will be joining the startup's board of directors.

RIM Hits 78 Million BlackBerry Subscribers, Up From 70 Million In September 2011

Jun 28, 9:19PM

950Today on RIM's Q1 2013 conference call, CEO Thorsten Heins admitted that "this was a challenging quarter for the company," but announced 78 million subscribers with "churn remaining high." He admitted particular success with the BlackBerry Bold product. For a little context, RIM hit 70 million global subscribers all the way back in September of 2011.

RIM's Q1 2013 Results: $518 Million Loss On $2.8 Billion In Revenue, BlackBerry 10 Launch Pushed To 2013

Jun 28, 8:23PM

rim-redRIM has just released their fiscal Q1 2013 financials, and they're about as bleak as the company expected. The Canadian company reported a net GAAP loss of $518 million (which breaks down to $0.99/share diluted) on revenues of $2.8 billion. To put that in a bit of perspective, RIM reported a net loss of $0.24/share diluted (or $125 million) on $4.2 billion in revenues in Q4 2012. Meanwhile, analysts expected RIM to report a net loss of $0.03/share on revenues of $3.1 billion in the days leading up to the release. The company also reported that despite their longstanding claims to the contrary, the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone isn't expected to see the light of day until the first quarter of calendar 2013.

Fits.me Finally Shipping A New Robot That Makes It Easier To See What You're Going To Look Like In That Suit

Jun 28, 8:14PM

fitbot01As a fat, lazy blogger, I find myself often buying clothes online only to discover that XXL for a designer in Spain is basically a XXS for babies in America. The resulting shape and return fees were enough to drive me to distraction - until I saw this wild robot call the FitBot. The robot - which is finally in production - essentially takes your measurements and reproduces them in real time. Got a big old tummy and broad shoulders? FitBot will show you what that shirt will look like on you. It can reproduce up to 2,000 body permutations and can be used by, say, an online store to show exactly what a certain shirt will look like on various people.

Peel Announces AllPlay TV, A Remote Control For Netflix, DVR, And (Eventually) More

Jun 28, 8:08PM

UnknownSocial TV startup Peel is at the Google I/O developers conference today, showing off an upcoming Google TV integration called AllPlay TV. VP of Marketing Scott Ellis demonstrated AllPlay TV for me earlier this week. He says it's fulfilling "the vision that we've been aspiring to for a long time — live TV, DVR, and web-based content, multiple sources all brought together in the app experience." In other words, when you want to watch something, you should able to find it in one interface, regardless of the delivery method.

Hands On With Google Drive On iOS

photo 1As promised at this morning's Google I/O conference, Google has launched a version of its Google Drive application on iOS today, which offers native support for the service formerly known as Google Docs on both iPhone and iPad. The app is live now in iTunes, and looks to give competitor Dropbox a run for its money. Although Google Drive has offered a mobile web version of its service for some time, many people prefer using a native application on their smartphones or tablets. This is somewhere Dropbox has previously excelled, but it no longer has that same advantage after today.

Google Bows To Apple: Chrome On iOS Will Use Apple's Slow UIWebView To Render Web Pages

Jun 28, 8:04PM

chromelogoGoogle is launching Chrome for iOS today. Many pundits assumed that Google was holding back Chrome from iOS because it couldn't use its own rendering engine, however, Google just told us that Chrome will actually use the same rendering engine that Apple makes available to every other third-party developer on iOS.

With New Mobile Apps, Eric Schmidt-Backed HealthTap Brings The House Call Back To Healthcare

Jun 28, 8:02PM

99135v6-max-250x250Over 80 percent of people seek health-related information online, on everything from insurance to help diagnosing aches and pains. As the world goes mobile, so too does health. Instead of using Google for your health queries or perusing WebMD, HealthTap launched last year to give people a way to connect with doctors in realtime via their mobile devices. Today, the startup is announcing a significant update to their interactive mobile health network, including a suite of new apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android and the Web, and a revamped, cleaner UI.

White House Will Take To Twitter To Answer Questions About SCOTUS Obamacare Ruling

Jun 28, 8:00PM

Obama_Tweeting_croppedThe United States Supreme Court today voted to uphold the Affordable Care Act (informally referred to as Obamacare), the health care reform bill that will require nearly all Americans to have health insurance coverage. It's a very, very big deal -- and it's apparent on social media sites that many Americans have very impassioned opinions about the ruling, both positive and negative. And lots of people out there just want to know what it all really means. And at 1:30pm PT (4:30pm ET) today, the White House will take to Twitter to clear up people's questions and worries, 140 characters at a time.

Wait, What? No Update For Google TV?

Jun 28, 7:45PM

googletv2Heading into Google I/O, there was one thing that confused me: Sony and Vizio announced new Google TV products a few days before the annual developer conference. Which I thought was pretty silly, because like, why would anyone release new hardware days before Google announces new software capabilities at the conference? And then the conference happened, and the answer became clear: Because there is no new software for Google TV. A representative for Google says that its focus at this year's conference is on the devices that are coming out and already in stores, not any update to the platform. That includes Sony's Internet Player with Google TV, which is available for pre-sale now and will retail for $199, and Vizio's Co-Star streaming box, which costs $99 and will go on pre-sale next month. There's also LG's series of Smart TVs, which run the Google TV operating system and went on sale in May.

Blue Jeans Puts Another $25M In Its Pocket To Attack Video Conferencing Giants

Jun 28, 1:13AM

onmuteBlue Jeans Network, a video conferencing company founded by a serial entrepreneur who has sold two companies to Cisco, is adding another $25 million to its coffers from NEA, Accel and Norwest Venture Partners. Interestingly enough, quite of bit of that capital will be going toward a marketing campaign meant to woo enterprise customers away from other video conferencing providers. The company's already got a billboard in San Francisco (pictured above) and the goal is to get more companies to switch from pure audio conferencing to video conferencing.

Infographics That Don't Suck: FindTheBest's Comparison Charts Are Now Embeddable

Jun 28, 12:17AM

findthebest logoFindTheBest, the startup led by DoubleClick founder Kevin O'Connor, has built charts comparing everything from financial advisors to dog breeds to smartphones. And now that those charts can be embedded in blog posts, you might start seeing them a lot more often. O'Connor's aim, as he's explained to me in the past, is to create the site where you can find the data you need to make a decision, presented in structured, easily understandable format. (FindTheBest is also trying to use that data to improve classified ads.) The company says it has created comparison widgets for more than 800 products and services.

Yahoo's Media Vision Comes Into Focus: Three Hires, Social Content Services (And Acquisitions?)

Jun 28, 12:03AM

CrowdOptic_1Yesterday the WSJ outlined how Yahoo's new, interim CEO Ross Levinsohn is taking the company back to its earlier roots of focusing on advertising around its media properties. The last 24 hours indicates that Yahoo is trying to move fast on that idea. Today the company announced three executive media hires, and TechCrunch has had a look in on a new interactive mobile TV service it's using to enhance its video offerings. The news comes less than a day after Yahoo announced a global deal with Spotify for music content, which will see the company integrate Spotify music across its media properties and create content for the Spotify platform, but also move away from offering a music platform of its own.

Google's First Foray Into Hardware Is All About The Ecosystem

Jun 27, 11:53PM

_MGT4115It's Day One of Google I/O, and the company set out to prove that it's not just about software and algorithms and whatnot, introducing a neat set of hardware devices that are available -- or will be soon -- to take advantage of its Android mobile operating system. But while Google is historically a software provider, it was its hardware that stole the show. Take a close look at the Nexus Q, its first piece of hardware, and you realize that the device pretty useless for doing anything as a standalone device. It is entirely dependent on the user to control it with an Android phone or tablet, and to be connected to Google Play to stream content from the cloud. The Nexus Q, in short, is positioned right in the center of a broader Google ecosystem, bridging the divide between Google's software and cloud services and the hardware that depends on its Android OS.

Facebook Now Lets You "Follow" Someone In Any App, Get Their Updates In News Feed Where The Ads Are

Jun 27, 11:30PM

FACEBOOK OM Nom NomAds, not payments, are the future of Facebook monetizing mobile, but it needs content to show them beside. The new Follow action announced today could deliver that content by letting you follow someone in a mobile app, and then sending the updates you'd normally see in that app back to your ad-laden news feed. More content -> more engagement and return visits -> more ad impressions, more money, and more reason for investors to buy. It will send referral traffic to developers, and it's actually convenient for users too. Why trapse from site to site and app to app when you can see everything your friends are doing everywhere, all from your news feed? You won't. You'll sit right there where Facebook can advertise to you.

Jun 27, 11:19PM

But to that end, a company called VolunteerSpot has just raised $1.5 million in Series A funding ff from Venture Capital here in New York, with participation from various angels in the Central TX Angel Network, Nebraska Angel Network, Angel List, and Baylor Angel Network.

Google+ History: The New API That Powers Its More Private Version Of Facebook Timeline

Jun 27, 10:40PM

GoogleWhile people were skydiving into I/O, Google quietly made a massively important announcement about a new feature called Google+ History, which gives apps an API to auto-share content to a private holding tank on your G+ profile, which you can then choose to share from. Developers who integrate History will score added discovery and referral traffic from the 75 million daily Google+ users the search giant announced today. Testing begins now and Google admits it will be bumpy. But it has the potential to populate Google+ with desperately needed content and make it a destination people actually want to visit.

Google's New 3D Imagery Comes to Google Earth For Android, iOS Coming Soon

Jun 27, 9:54PM

google_maps_3d_logoA few weeks ago, Google hosted a last-minute press conference in San Francisco to announce its new, highly detailed 3D maps. While many of us expected the company to actually launch the maps then, Google never announced actual launch date. Today, the wait is over, as the new version of Google Earth for Android (version 7.0) now offers access to the new 3D imagery. You can download the updated Google Earth for Android app from the Play store now.

Exclusive: Foodspotting Teams With The Melting Pot To Allow People To Take Pictures Of Cheese

Jun 27, 9:48PM

Screen Shot 2012-06-27 at 5At TechCrunch we like to get the rest of the story. That's why we go in-depth, hard-hitting, and close to the ground. Nowhere is that clearer than in this hardcore, hardball, and soft cheese interview with the folks from the Melting Pot, a popular fondue (from the French "What do we do with this old cheese? Melt it?") restaurant that may or may not be in your general vicinity. The Melting Pot has teamed up with Foodspotting.com, a popular site for spotting food, and, like a tempest-tossed couple engulfed by a sea of hot broth, both companies are clawing their way back into the public consciousness by offering a $100 gift card to lucky foodspotters who deign to spot their fondue. I'm not exactly sure how the contest works (presumably you take pictures of whatever fell into your gruyere) but $100 is nothing to sneeze at nor would you want to because sneezing into fondue can make quite a nasty sort of conglomerate.

Google's Play Store Now Lets Users Remotely Update And Uninstall Android Apps

Jun 27, 8:32PM

remoteuninstallAll Googled out yet? I can't blame you if you are, but it seems that the company has been even busier than their two hour press conference let on. In addition to pushing the Android version of their Chrome browser out of beta, Google has also added some new app controls to the "My Android Apps" section of the Google Play Store.

OrangeScape Launches Kissflow, A Workflow-Builder For Google Apps

Jun 27, 8:19PM

KiSSFLOW_WhiteBusinesses using Google Apps should have an easier time managing complex tasks starting today with the launch of Kissflow from startup OrangeScape — it's supposedly the first workflow-creator that's "deeply integrated" with Apps. OrangeScape is pitching this as an alternative to using email and spreadsheets to track approvals and other tasks, which can turn into a headache as the company grows and tasks get more complex. With Kissflow, businesses should be able to create workflows for things like expense reporting in five relatively easy steps: Naming the process, designing the form, defining the workflow, configure the permissions, then publish.

The Facebook Ecosystem CrunchUp + Our 7th Annual August Capital Party: Aug 3rd In Silicon Valley

Jun 27, 8:03PM

crunchup2012TechCrunch has been throwing an annual summer party at August Capital since 2006, the point at which Michael Arrington realized it had gotten too big for his Atherton back yard. And this year we're doing it again, on the same big sunny Sand Hill balcony at the venture firm's headquarters. The party starts at 5:30 p.m. and goes til 9:00 p.m. And, we'll also be back with our fourth-ever CrunchUp earlier that day, at Fox Theater in Redwood City -- with a new, more specific theme. TechCrunch has looked at The Mobile Web Wars, The Real-Time Stream, Social Currency and Mobile First in previous years. Now lots of developers and investors in Silicon Valley are focused on a big and newly-public company: Facebook.

Confirmed: NY Times Is Launching A Site In China Tomorrow, With No Paywall

Jun 27, 7:11PM

Screen shot 2012-06-27 at 13.13.53Earlier today we posted a story about what appeared to be a new direction for the New York Times: a Chinese-language news site, and a blogging account with Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. The New York Times has now confirmed its move into China and the authenticity of both. The Weibo account now has over 10,000 followers, and the site will be kicking off on Thursday morning, Beijing time. According to the statement from the NY Times we've just received, the site will be launched as a beta version. "The site will grow in scope and functionality over the course of the next several months," the statement says. A spokesperson has confirmed to me that it will sit outside of the paywall.

These Are The Top Five Features Of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Jun 27, 7:00PM

_MGT3919Today Google announced the latest version of its mobile operating system: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It's an incremental upgrade — a number of valuable features have been added, but there's no real revamp to be seen. Still, these features are incredibly competitive, and in many ways threaten Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 6. Google's voice transcription and search now has the look and feel of Siri's UI, the camera app works in a more streamlined fashion with swipe to preview, and Google Now goes a step further than Siri to offer everything you need to know without you ever saying a word. That said, here are the top five features of the new platform for your drooling pleasure. Check it out:

Named Glass Explorer Edition, it's available to those at Google I/O and costs a whopping $1500. Plus, the device will not ship until next year. But Google Glass is real. This is big.
