The Real Reason Open Source Startups Fail
Apr 13, 1:00AM
The recent news around Nebula shutting its doors has stirred speculation that OpenStack startups are struggling because of the state of the OpenStack market. I even read a piece claiming that the OpenStack dream is on “life support.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is that winning in open source requires a playbook that is drastically different from one… Read More
Not Quite Smart, The Luminox ANU Chronograph Is At Least Quite Bright
Apr 13, 12:09AM
This weekend’s watch review comes to us from Luminox, a manufacturer well-known for their amazingly bright luminescent hands and pips. Luminox uses small tubes of tritium coated with phosphor. As the tritium decays it excites the phosphor, allowing the tubes to glow for years without “charging” in sunlight. It’s a neat trick and it affords amazing readability in the dark. Read More

The Power Of Earned Media In Social Images
Apr 12, 6:00PM
Brands are spending large amounts of money on sponsorships, in particular in sports, which are seen as a unique way of engaging emotionally with fans. Ideally the brand will be featured prominently in an image of a star player scoring a key goal for the home side and reap the benefits of being connected to a moment of collective glory. Anecdotally brands get “a lot” of exposure… Read More

How Pixar Solves Problems From The Inside Out
Apr 12, 5:07PM
It’s easy to forget that Pixar is a technology company. Mostly because the invention that they do is in service of a narrative. When done successfully, your attention is held by that narrative, not by the technical achievements that made it possible. With Inside Out, its newest feature due later this year, Pixar had its own unique set of technical challenges to overcome. A bigger vision… Read More
