Alibaba announced today that it has created a $129 million non-profit organization to help young people who want to start businesses on the e-commerce giant’s online marketplaces. P&G's #LikeAGirl Ad Scored The Most Social Buzz During Super Bowl 2015
Feb 02, 4:43AM
The 2015 Super Bowl between the Patriots and Seahawks has wrapped, but the scores on how well this year’s advertisements performed are just now rolling in. These coveted time slots reach millions of viewers, and advertisers take advantage by showing some of their best – or, in some cases, most controversial – ads of the year. Adobe this evening has been monitoring the… Read More
The SaaS Adventure
Feb 02, 2:00AM
“What does it take to build a billion-dollar SaaS enterprise-software company?” I hear this question a lot in my work as a tech investor, and it’s incredibly tough to answer. I bet mountain climbers feel the same way when they’re asked how they conquered a major summit. The answer is both incremental — you succeed by placing one foot in front of the other, of… Read More

Feb 02, 1:45AM
Line — the Japanese messaging service known for its zany cartoon stickers — is taking a first step towards grocery sales and delivery in Southeast Asia, in the mold of U.S. startup Instacart. Read More
I'm Not Sure This Will Actually Happen If You Spill Coke On Your Computer, But I'm Willing To Try
Feb 02, 1:17AM
Did you guys see that Coca Cola Super Bowl commercial? You know the one. It opens with a weird montage of people who are sad because of the Internet, then segues into a Tron-style data center, where some guy spills Coke on a server. Now, you might think that this would be bad news, but no! Instead of everything breaking down, some puzzling combination of Coca Cola and positive emotions… Read More
Super Bowl Advertising Moves Beyond TV Commercials
Feb 01, 11:00PM
Editor’s Note: Scott Ferber is chairman and chief executive of the video technology services firm Videology, and the co-founder of Advertising.com (now a division of our parent, Aol). The Super Bowl has always been a showcase for cutting-edge advertisements –no surprise when you consider that last year’s 111.5 million viewers made Super Bowl XLVIII the most-watched TV… Read More
Closing The Computer Science Gap, From Classroom To Career
Feb 01, 10:00PM
My twins will turn four in 2015, and they know more about computers now than I did when I took over as president and CEO of Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) in 2003. And it’s a good thing because currently there are more than 75,000 open jobs in computing in California and only 4,324 computer science graduates to fill them. Read More
The Diary Of A Cord Cutter In 2015
Feb 01, 8:42PM
I know I’m late to the party by some accounts. Early adopters cut the cord years ago and haven’t looked back. For me, turning off cable TV was an idea I flirted with, yet I just kept renewing my package deal for some reason. But there has been no better time to finally severe ties with big cable, and their pricey television packages that have you paying for hundreds of channels… Read More
The Freedom Clip Breaks Coffee Pod DRM Because Java Wants To Be Free, Man
Feb 01, 8:41PM
The latest Keurig K-Cup machines have a dirty secret: built into the little ground coffee pods that so many know and love is a nefarious form of DRM. A special ink found only on real cups (and damaged by use) ensures that you can only use “real” K-Cups, thereby preventing you from making your own pirate cups. But freedom’s just another word for sticking it to the man, and… Read More
The Pirate Bay Is Back After Nearly Two Months Of Downtime
Feb 01, 7:56PM
One of the Internet’s most targeted, and yet also most hard-to-kill sites is back again following a raid on its servers over seven weeks ago: The Pirate Bay resides once again at its familiar “.se” URL, offering a database that appears to be fairly intact, with torrents mostly in place up to its closure on December 9. The website, a famed destination for those seeking… Read More
The Storm eBike Is A $499 Entry-Level Electric Bike
Feb 01, 6:19PM
At its $499 launch price on Indiegogo, the Storm eBike seems like a solid entry-level option. Comparable bikes I’ve tried cost a few hundred dollars more, and if you really do want things like fancy industrial design and storage for stuff while you ride, you generally have to pony up well over $1,000. This Search Engine Wants More Human Input
Feb 01, 6:00PM
Does the ever-increasing volume of digital information demand a more powerful search interface? One that allows for more complex queries to be formulated, and supports instances where the information being sought out is not necessarily something the user is aware of when they begin tapping on the keyboard? Read More
Virtual Reality, The Empathy Machine
Feb 01, 6:00PM
I’ve never been to Syria. Never been in a terrorist attack. Never experienced the confusion and fear, the loss of faith in my species in the face of senseless violence. But now I know just a little bit what it feels like. And it makes me want to help. What if you really could walk a mile in someone’s shoes? Shared perspective breeds understanding. Until now, though, the closest… Read More
NBC's 10-Hour Super Bowl Live Stream Begins Now
Feb 01, 5:00PM
As we reported weeks ago, NBC is bringing the Super Bowl to the internet for free offering a live stream of the big game today starting at noon ET. This isn’t the first time that NBC has streamed the big game, but it is the first time that the whole game (from pre-game, to the game itself, to half-time and beyond) will be streamed start to finish on the internet. Also, users… Read More

Pulsate, a startup with a platform to deliver content for brands based on a user’s location and preferences, has raised $1.2 million in funding from PayPal and Dunnhumby (the customer science company). The money will be used to expand the platform and service customers. Menlo Park-based Pulsate is a so-called “end-to-end context marketing” platform. Brands use it to surface… Read More
Follow The Data Down The Rabbit Hole
Feb 01, 4:00PM
When it comes to analyzing big data, often we are urged to “follow the data,” “unlock its secrets,” analyze it and expect obscure truths to finally be revealed. While this is essentially true, data can tell many tales, and the way analytics are used nowadays, those tales greatly differ, depending on the human minds that interpret them. Read More
StartSLC Kicks Off To Support A Burgeoning Utah Tech Culture
Feb 01, 3:42PM
A crowd of tech enthusiasts sat warm inside the grand hall of an old train station this last Saturday night, on the west end of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. They braved the otherwise chilly evening, the traffic and eschewed several other events like the star-studded Sundance to hear the next startup pitch at the state’s biggest ever technology event, StartSLC. An estimated 4,000… Read More
Milk Nanny Automatically Makes A Refreshing Bottle Of Formula For Baby
Feb 01, 1:39PM
As a parent I understand that gadgets like the Milk Nanny will be forgotten – like the Diaper Genie and the no-pacifier rule – five months into the severe sleep-deprivation experiment that is parenthood. As a gadget freak, however, I do think it’s pretty cool. It’s a simple device. The system holds an amount of formula and water. When you need formula you simply press… Read More
Hockey And Big Data
Feb 01, 2:00AM
Hockey is a naturally aggressive sport, and the casual fan has learned to associate it with violence, the kind that makes the daily sports highlight segment on the news. But like other sports, there are subtle nuances to the game that are lost in between the bare-knuckle brawls and bone-jarring hits. Hockey is the ultimate team sport in the regard that players are more than willing to… Read More
How Connected Cars Have Established A New Ecosystem Powered By IoT
Jan 31, 10:00PM
Not long ago, after you bought a new vehicle, the manufacturer had very little contact with you for years until it was time to sell you another car. The Internet of Things is changing all that. The IoT-enabled “connected car” turns the vehicle itself into a hub for an entire ecosystem of connected services that offer consumers a wealth of benefits including enhanced safety and… Read More
