Adobe Loses CTO But Beats Q1 Estimates: $1.01B Revenue, $0.35 Non-GAAP EPS, 479K Paying Creative Cloud Subscribers

Mar 19, 9:19PM

AdobeAdobe just announced its Q1 2013 earnings, which generally beat analyst estimates. Overall revenue for the first quarter was $1.01 billion and GAAP earnings per share of $0.12 and non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) of $0.35, ahead of the analyst consensus of $0.31 non-GAAP EPS on revenue of $986 million. Overall operating income was $240.7 million and net income was $177.9 million on a non-GAAP basis. Kevin Lynch Leaves Adobe (For Apple?) Just as the company released its earnings, however, an SEC filing also revealed that it’s long-term CTO Kevin Lynch is leaving the company on March 22 “to pursue other opportunities.” Rumor has it that he is leaving for Apple, which would be an interesting move for somebody who long defended Flash against Apple and once likened Apple’s walled-garden approach to 19th-century railroads. Almost 500K Creative Cloud Subscribers Maybe the most important metric of today’s earnings, however, wasn’t about the financial details but the face that the company’s Creative Cloud offering now has more than 479,000 paying subscribers, an increase of 153,000 compared to the end of the last quarter. Adobe also announced that it now has 2 million free and trial subscribers to its Creative Cloud. “We exited the quarter with 479 thousand paid subscriptions, and recently we crossed the half-million mark. With this momentum, we are on track to reach our goal of 1.25 million paid subscriptions by the end of this fiscal year,” Adobe CEP Shantanu Narayen said in a prepared statement (PDF) during the company’s earnings call today. The Adobe Marketing Cloud, another cornerstone of the company’s product line, achieved quarterly revenue of $215.4 million, a 20% year-over-year increase. For the whole year, Adobe expects its Marketing Cloud revenue to increase 25%.

Halfway Through Its 100 Day Voyage, Checking In With The 'Unreasonable At Sea' Startup Ship

Mar 19, 8:20PM

Unreasonable At Sea's around the world voyageWhen we first heard about Daniel Epstein's plan to bring his Unreasonable Institute startup accelerator to the high seas with a 100 day, around-the-world sailing expedition called 'Unreasonable At Sea,' it frankly seemed like a pretty crazy idea. Let alone the risk of pirates (the real kind, not the entrepreneurial kind), there are so many possible things that could go wrong for the 11 startups aboard the ship -- bad Internet connections, seasickness, homesickness, and the like.

India's World Startup Report Is Released And The Future Of Technology Looks Bright For The Country

Mar 19, 7:46PM

Bowei with Brad and DaveWrapping your brain around technology trends here in the United States, or even just in Silicon Valley, is a chore. Figuring out the trends and who the major players are in an emerging market like India is 10 times as difficult. Bowei Gai, former LinkedIn employee by way of his company CardMuncher being acquired, has done just that under his World Startup Report umbrella. Brad Feld and Dave McClure have been leading the mentor and seed-funding charge in India, as well as the Valley, as of late, and shared some interesting thoughts with us based on what they were able to pull from the report. Feld told us that the online and offline business differences in India are what stood out to him: I wasn’t tuned into the difference between online and offline businesses in India. The friction in offline society has a tremendous impact on any businesses, especially ones outside India, whereas the online world has enormous opportunities that seem unconstrained in the near term due to the extremely low penetration of smartphones when compared to the high penetration of mobile. Here’s the extremely detailed report, complete with population information, market opportunity and current players in the country: The idea for the World Startup Report is that one will be done in all major markets that are up-and-comers in the tech space. This is no small task, but if this India report is indicative of the types of information that Gai and his team are mining, then good things are bound to happen. Its mission is to share these documents for free, to empower local startup “activists” to become ambassadors for their region and ecosystem. Once those leaders emerge, then all of the pieces will start coming together for places like India. Gai told me about the experience of gathering all of the information in the report above, which seemed like quite an adventure: It’s been a life changing experience, having the ability to walk into startup’s office and ask any questions about their experience. In the last 3 months, we spoke close to 2,000 young entrepreneurs, well-known successes, angels, VCs and policymakers to get everyone’s perspective on their startup ecosystem. McClure talked to me about what it means to be more global as far as investing goes and why 500 Startups is starting to spend actual time, and money, in India: The benefits and opportunities for getting in

Microsoft To Start Integrating Yammer Into Office 365 And SharePoint This Summer, Deeper Connections Coming This Fall

Mar 19, 7:03PM

yammer365Microsoft wants to make Yammer the social layer across all of its products and today, at Convergence 2013, the company announced a more detailed roadmap for how it plans to do so. Earlier this year, it started by integrating Yammer and Dynamics CRM, but the company obviously has larger plans for the former TechCrunch50 winner it acquired for over $1 billion. This summer, Microsoft will roll out an update to Office 365 that will allow its customers to replace the SharePoint newsfeed with Yammer. This fall, it will expand this integration with support for single sign-on and seamless navigation right inside of Office 365′s global navigation bar. As Microsoft’s senior director of its Office Division Jared Spataro told me earlier today, this first integration of Yammer and Office 365 will be a “very simple integration.” This means, for example, that users still have to sign in to Yammer separately, as the single sign-on will only launch in the fall. The update simply replaces the “Newsfeed” link on Office 365 with a link to Yammer.com for now. The version the company plans to launch in the fall will also provide “rich document capabilities, integrating the Office Web Apps to add editing and co-editing of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents,” Spataro writes in today’s announcement. Come 2014, Microsoft plans to move to a 90-day update cycle for the social enhancements it plans to add to Office 365. It will continue to deepen the connections between Yammer and Office 365 and Spataro expects that these incremental enhancements will “combine social, collaboration, email, instant messaging, voice, video, and line of business applications in innovative new ways.” For on-premise installs of Sharepoint Server 2013, Microsoft will launch the option to replace the Sharepoint Newsfeed with Yammer, creating what is essentially a hybrid service that mostly runs on-premise but uses Yammer in the cloud. This new hybrid deployment, Spataro, told me, should feel very natural to users. Obviously, this will remain a choice for the time being, though, and Spataro noted that the company remains “committed to the on-premise install base,” but that a number of users have asked for this integration. In his blog post today, Spataro notes that he believes companies want to use Yammer for social. It is, he writes today, “our big bet for enterprise social, and we're committed to making it the underlying social layer for all of our products.” For those who can’t move

New "Chameleon" Botnet Could Be Costing Advertisers Up To $6 Million A Month

Mar 19, 6:52PM

chameleonBotnets. To security researchers, they're like digital Hydra. For each head they slay, another two explode from the stump. Just a month ago, Microsoft/Symantec announced that they'd killed the massive Bamital botnet, which was fakin' clicks to the tune of a million bucks a year. This new guy that just popped up? Six million. Per month.

Google Makes Animated Gifs A Permanent Part Of Image Search, Find Falling Cats Easier

Mar 19, 6:45PM

falling_20catThere are few people on the Internet who don’t enjoy a great animated gif. For some, having conversations only using these animated images is a way of life. But finding these images is a whole other issue. Relying on Tumblr blogs and regular Google search just wasn’t enough, so Google has decided to make it easier to find these cat-falling-off-of-chair masterpieces using its image search product. Google is rolling out the animated gif search filter now, and you’ll be able to click “Search tools” and then “Animated” under type to filter your search with animated goodness only. You’ll be able to drill down further by finding images with transparent backgrounds only. Animated gifs are serious, serious business after all. Here’s a look at what you can expect whilst looking for that perfect animated image using Google image search: In all seriousness, finding an animated gif using Google has been a pain in the ass. Usually, I’d search for a string like “cat falling gif,” which means that the results might or might not be animated. No more of that. Click on the image you want to check out and you’ll see it in its animated glory in a preview: Thank you, Google.

One of the Biggest Mistakes Enterprise Startups Make

Mar 19, 6:33PM

professional services repThe era of VCs investing in successful consumer Internet startups such as eBay led to a belief system that seemed to permeate many enterprise software startups that hiring sales or implementation people was a bad thing. And many enterprise startups I meet try to convince me they don't need professional services teams. This is a big mistake. This post explains why ...

Microsoft Being Probed For Bribery By U.S. Investigators

Mar 19, 6:26PM

images (39)Federal regulators are investigating Microsoft for allegedly bribing foreign governments for favor in software contracts. “Lawyers from the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are examining kickback allegations made by a former Microsoft representative in China, as well as the company’s relationship with certain resellers and consultants in Romania and Italy,” sources familiar with the allegations, tell The Wall Street Journal, which broke the story earlier today. An anonymous tipster alleges that Microsoft’s China division instructed him to offer kickbacks in exchange for signing off on software contracts. To further complicate the allegations, the tipster was also involved in a labor dispute with the software giant. The tipsters contact with Microsoft ended in 2008. “Like every large company with operations around the world we sometimes receive allegations about potential misconduct by employees or business partners,” John Frank, Microsoft’s vice president and deputy general counsel, tells The Journal. “We cooperate fully in any government inquiries,” Frank added. The probe is also investigating bribery practices in Italy, related to consultants of Microsoft’s customer loyalty program. Consultants were used as “vehicles for used such consultants as vehicles for lavishing gifts and trips on Italian procurement officials in exchange for government business.” Federal investigators are conducting the probe under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and a new whistleblower program at the Securities and Exchange Commission. “Filing allegations simultaneously with the company and the government provides whistleblowers some job security. Companies can face private lawsuits for sacking employees in retaliation for submitting allegations to the SEC, even if the tips never lead to an enforcement action,” explains the Journal. While Microsoft says it is diligent about investigating corruption, it has offices in over 100 countries and roughly 640,000 partners businesses around the globe. Interestingly enough, ZDnet argues the claims against Microsoft should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism, since The Journal itself was recently investigated for bribery, but never pursued by the U.S. government. “It comes only a few days after the Journal itself was investigated by U.S. federal authorities over what appear to be claims of bribery, but were not pursued by the U.S. government. Instead, the Journal, owned by the Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation empire, blamed China for retaliating against the newspaper’s critical reporting of Beijing in recent weeks,” writes Zack Whittaker. More on this story as it develops.

YC-Backed Humble Bundle Launches Pay-What-You-Want Weekly Deals, Starting With Bastion

Mar 19, 6:26PM

tumblr_inline_mjvvmriLsB1qz4rgpThe Humble Bundles have been an amazing deal for gamers. Today, the company behind the bundles announced that they would introduce a new weekly sale, in addition to the usual bundles that happen every month or so. Everything else remains the same — pay what you want to get DRM-free downloads of indie games that work on Windows, Mac and Linux. A small customizable part of every sale goes to two charities as well. The first weekly sale is Bastion, a game that was part of a previous bundle. But for the weekly deals, Humble Bundle introduced a new tier system that is very reminiscent of how Kickstarter works — the more you pay, the more you get. For example, you can choose to only pay $0.01 to get Bastion. But if you pay $1 or more, you’ll get a Steam key. If you beat the average (currently $2.63), you’ll get the soundtrack, artworks, ringtones and sheet music. Finally, if you pay more than $25, the company will deliver merchandise to your home, such as a soundtrack CD and postcards. The two charities that will receive part of the sales are long-time partners Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child’s Play Charity. New deals will appear every Tuesday on the site. It remains to be seen whether weekly deals will only consist of games that were previously available in bundles. By default, Humble Bundle takes a 15 percent cut. While this portion is customizable, many customers tend to buy with the default settings. The San Francisco-based company just finished another bundle, the Humble Bundle with Android 5. It sold more than 210,000 bundles, representing more than $1.46 million in sales. Even though customers can pay what they want, it represents quite a lot of money for indie game developers, charities and Humble Bundle.

Google Launches Drive Realtime API To Let Developers Build Apps With Real-Time Collaboration

Mar 19, 5:42PM

GoogleGoogle just announced the launch of its Google Drive Realtime API, a new tool for developers that will allow them to bring the same real-time collaboration features that power Google Drive to their own apps. The API, Google writes, “handles network communication, storage, presence, conflict resolution, and other collaborative details so you can focus on building great apps.” Google partnered with three-developer focused tools, the collaborative code editor Neutron Drive, the project scheduling tool Gantter and the diagraming tool draw.io to test and launch this API. To show off the power of the API, Google also developed a cube puzzle that uses the Realtime API, as well as a Drive Realtime API Playground for testing the API. Developers, of course, also need to sign up for the Drive API before they can use the Realtime API, too. The API, Google writes, provides “collaborative versions of familiar data objects such as maps, lists, strings, and JSON values and automatically synchronizes and stores modifications to these objects.” In addition, developers can also add custom objects and references. Because the API tracks the collaborators’ presence, developers can alert users when others join, leave or make changes to a document. Just like on Drive, the Realtime API also ensures that local changes are immediately reflected in the local document thanks to Google’s use of operational transformation (OT) at the core of the system. This means your local app will continue to feel responsive, even on high-latency networks.

Google+ Introduces New Hangouts App Called Capture, To Snap Pics Of Special Moments As They Happen

Mar 19, 5:34PM

2576981899_fef76fd366_zToday, Google introduced a new app for one of its most popular products, Hangouts. While Hangouts let you chat with multiple people over video, there are those moments when someone makes a funny face, does something ridiculous or just makes you want to, well, capture something. This is a feature that is making its way into mobile devices, meaning the ability to shoot video and snap pics along the way. There are so many fantastic still moments that take place during a 10-minute video conversation, and now you can grab them as they come. This is also a nice way for Google to help its users generate content while they’re generating content, without even making a real effort. Here’s what Google’s Jeremy Ng said about the feature today: The challenge, oftentimes, is capturing your favorite moments as they happen, so today we’re introducing the new Hangouts Capture app. With it you can take pictures of your Hangouts-in-progress, including a number of features not available in the usual screenshot workarounds: - Once you've opened the Hangouts Capture app, you can snap photos of your Hangout view with a single click - All photos are saved to a shared album, visible only to other Hangout invitees - You can view these photos while inside the Hangout, when browsing your photo albums, or by visiting the original Hangout post - And, importantly, you'll always know when the app is in use: when you join a Hangout, when someone opens the app, and whenever a picture is taken The Hangouts Capture app will soon be available worldwide, so look for it the next time you join a Hangout. Together with Effects, YouTube and other apps, we hope you'll find Hangouts an even better way to make memories together. Here’s what the flow looks like for snapping a pic of that special moment: The design itself is simple, and looks like the default camera app in Android or iOS. Simply open the app, wait for the right moment, then snap the picture. You could take quite a few of these stills and then go back later to share the best in your stream after the Hangout is over. As Ng pointed out, everyone in the Hangout will know when someone has the app open and when a picture is taken, so there won’t be any surprises. I’ve personally used tools like Skitch to take snapshots

YC-Backed Fivetran Launches A Smart Online Spreadsheet For Data Analysis

Mar 19, 4:29PM

fivetran-logo-lightFivetran, a new Y Combinator-backed startup that is launching today, wants to bring spreadsheets into the modern age and make it easier for users to work with messy data and analyze large amounts of information. Most people, for better or worse, use their spreadsheets as databases, and Fivetran acknowledges this by combining SQL-like queries with standard spreadsheet functions and statistical tools that will look familiar to users of more advanced tools like Matlab. As the co-founders George Fraser (CEO) and Taylor Brown (head of product) told me earlier this week, the idea behind the project is that “spreadsheets have 50 percent of the power of programming and we want to bring the other 50 percent to spreadsheets.” As the founders told me, there is still a huge gulf between tools like Excel and Matlab. The earliest prototypes of Fivetran still leaned more toward the Matlab side of things and looked more like a programming environment. Today, however, the service is more like a regular spreadsheet with extensive wizards that guide you through complex data transformations (including regression models) and the SQL-like selects and joins, as well as the tools data cleaning and text-mining features. Because the calculations happen in the cloud (on Amazon’s EC2 platform), spreadsheets can be extremely large and complex. The service, which the team started working on last December, allows users to upload Excel documents, as well as CSV and JSON files and start working with them immediately (in the long run, the team plans to add direct connections to databases, too). To give people a better idea of the power of Fivetran, the founders also created a March Madness bracket simulator, as well as a set of tutorials. Once they have added their initial data, users can manipulate it using Fivetran’s “step” system, which allows them to create additional sheets based on their calculations. This is a bit of a departure from how most spreadsheets work, but you can also still use your familiar Excel formulas (think SUM(a,b) etc.) to work with your data as well. The team is currently working on adding unit testing and a revision control system for spreadsheets. Fivetran is using an interesting pricing model that is a bit similar to what you would expect from a hosting provider. There are free accounts that allow you to create up to five projects that can use up to 1GB of memory. Basic accounts start
