Want To Be Like Steve Jobs? Well It's Probably Not Going To Happen, Says BF Larry Ellison

May 31, 1:38AM

Screen Shot 2012-05-30 at 6.17.54 PMBecause Steve Jobs had visited the AllThingsD stage so many times over the course of the past decade, Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher decided to pay him tribute by inviting two of his friends for 25 years, Dr. Ed Catmull and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, to talk for the closing hour about "The Lessons of Steve Jobs." When both men were asked by Mossberg about what advice they had for aspiring entrepreneurs who'd like to replicate Steve's success, both had similar answers but Ellison, who was Jobs next door neighbor in Woodside, dominated the conversation. Want to be like Steve Jobs? Well you're not going to get there by trying, Ellison asserted.

Y Combinator's Harj Taggar On Bad Pitches, Learning To Code, And The Power Of Hacker News [TCTV]

May 31, 1:09AM

Screen shot 2012-05-30 at 6.05.22 PMPaul Graham may be the most public face of Silicon Valley startup incubator Y Combinator, but as the firm has grown so has its managing team. One of the first people to join YC as a partner besides its founders was Harjeet Taggar, an Oxford-educated entrepreneur who first came on the startup scene as the co-founder of Auctomatic, a company in YC's 2007 class that went on to be acquired by Live Current Media in 2008. Though he's relatively young, once you hear Taggar speak for a few minutes you get why YC snapped him up as a partner...

Larry Ellison Has Learned To Embrace Cloud Computing, Not Convinced It's An "Incredible New Thing"

May 31, 12:24AM

larry ellisonOracle's Larry Ellison has acquired a reputation as a cloud computing opponent — after all, he famously called the term "complete gibberish" a few years ago. Today, however, he said, "I'm no longer resisting the name. Call it what you want." In fact, Ellison made it sound like he doesn't get enough credit for starting the trend: "NetSuite was my idea. I called up Evan Goldberg and said, 'We're going to do ERP on the Internet.'" That, he said, was an early example of software-as-a-service, and Salesforce.com co-founder Marc Benioff (who has worked to tie his company's identity to the cloud) copied the idea a few months later, but "in a narrow way." (Apparently this got a smirk out of Benioff, who was in the audience.)

NASDAQ's Gamble With Facebook's Fortune

May 31, 12:02AM

NASDAQ DICE FinishedNASDAQ had a choice. When its systems buckled under the titanic volume of Facebook IPO share orders, it could have pushed back trading a day, or at least recommended as much to Mark Zuckerberg and company. But as the IPO's scheduled time passed, NASDAQ made a cavalier decision to stumble forth on broken legs, pretending like little was wrong rather than halt trading as brokers asked. There seemed to be no plan for if things went wrong. An error-filled day of trading ensued, and confused investors pulled back. Financials aside, public perception is important for a public company. And when Facebook's share price sunk, public perception went down with it.

Kleiner Perkins Partner John Doerr Speaks Out On Lawsuit: "Our Firm Does Not Discriminate Based On Gender"

May 30, 10:22PM

John Doerr PictureJohn Doerr, the longtime partner at Silicon Valley venture capital stalwart Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers who is perhaps the firm's most recognizable public face, has spoken out for the first time about the gender discrimination lawsuit filed against the firm earlier this month by partner Ellen Pao (news of which was first broken by TechCrunch last week.)

The Internet Never Forgets: Politwoops Saves The Tweets Your Politicians Tried To Delete

May 30, 10:15PM

sunlight_foundation_logoOnce something is on the Internet, it's typically pretty hard to delete it. Unless somebody retweets a posting to Twitter, though, a deleted tweet it is pretty much gone forever. With Politwoops, however, the Sunlight Foundation is now preserving these tweets for posterity. Politwoops follows all the 433 official Twitter accounts for members of Congress, as well as President Obama's and Mitt Romney's. As Tom Lee, the director of Sunlight Labs, noted in today's launch announcement, "in politics, Twitter is part of the ever-present 'spin room' of the digital age. But unlike other mediums, the record of events can be edited; tweets deleted from twitter.com are hard or impossible to see after the fact."

Death To The Dock Connector? Apple Is Looking For A Connector Design Engineer

May 30, 10:01PM

apple-dock-connector-to-usb-cableCould Apple really be looking to end their longstanding affair with the 30-pin Dock Connector? It's been a move that's been rumored for years, and a job opening at Cupertino for a Connector Design Engineer adds a bit of fuel to that fire. This person will be "responsible for managing multiple connector designs and developments in support of the iPod product lines." It goes on to describe that this task will "involve adaptation of existing connectors or complete new designs." It's apparently important enough to Apple that they've got another, very similar listing on their jobs page.

Sean Parker: Apple Tried To Keep Spotify Out Of The U.S.

May 30, 9:46PM

photoAnswering a question at AllThingsD, Sean Parker confirmed that "there was some indication" that Apple tried to keep Spotify out of the U.S. market. "There was some indication that that was happening," Parker said, "It's a very small industry in a lot of ways, certainly smaller than it was 12 years ago," He joked.

So Why Is LinkedIn An IPO Standout?

May 30, 9:19PM

Screen Shot 2012-05-30 at 1.57.16 PMEarlier this morning at D10 KPCB analyst Mary Meeker showed a pretty definitive slide about the current state of the public markets with regards to tech companies. "The private market is in a bubble," Meeker said, "We have a $1 billion fund, and didn't invest once in Q1 because the valuations too crazy." The problem with these valuations is that public market investors are more skeptical, Meeker asserted bringing up the above slide comparing the IPOs of Facebook, Zynga, Groupon, Pandora and LinkedIn. Because of this skepticism their valuations are suppressed, almost all were trading at 20% lower than their initial IPO pricing, all except LinkedIn that is. The public market has taken kindly to the career focused social network, which is currently trading at $100 a share, 137% above its strike price of $32.

MiniDates Schedules Real-Life (Legitimately) Blind Dates For You

May 30, 8:38PM

Screen shot 2012-05-30 at 4.37.18 PMTraditionally, dating sites like eHarmony and OkCupid follow the same format. You input your info, browse through all the thumbnails accompanied by A/S/L, and send out a barrage of flirty messages. Then you wait. Maybe you're hit with some match-type options, but for the most part it's a lot of browsing/messaging. But a new crop of online dating services have found interesting ways to approach the space, not least of all MiniDates - Time2Meet. MiniDates joins Cheek'd and Coffee Meets Bagel in pushing a real-life connection much harder than a virtual one, by simply scheduling dates (or MiniDates) for you based on your schedule and suitor preferences. No messaging, no browsing, just a real-life blind date at a neutral, public location.

Users interested in taking the pre-release version of the app for a spin can mosey over to Flipboard's Android landing page, where they can sign up for the beta and wait patiently to receive a download link in their inbox. Google Voice's New Update Lets Users Manage Anonymous Calls

May 30, 7:06PM

google_voice_logo_medFor all its faults, Google Voice has gotten to be pretty solid with regard to how it routes calls from different groups of people, and today the search giant has gussied up the service even more. According to the official Google Voice blog, a new update now gives users more control over what to do with people who hide their phone numbers when they call. But let's back up a minute here.

Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs Movie Probably Won't Be "Cradle To Grave" Biography

May 30, 6:56PM

aaron sorkinScreenwriter Aaron Sorkin offered some early thoughts today on the movie adaptation of Walter Isaacson's biography Steve Jobs, which he has signed on to write. Sorkin was speaking at the D10 conference, and it sounds like he hasn't actually written any of the screenplay yet — he said the initial stages of the process will look at lot more "like watching ESPN."

Mary Meeker: "We Are Still In Spring Training — Magnitude Of Upcoming Change Will Be Stunning"

May 30, 6:48PM

re-imagining-computing-devicesMary Meeker's annual Internet Trends report is usually full of good stuff and this year is no exception. We already covered her comments about mobile monetization and the Facebook IPO, but one of the most interesting sections of her presentation were her thoughts about the future of the Internet. In her view, technology has already allowed us to re-imagine everything from book to news to note taking to crime awareness. Still, according to her, "we are still in spring training" and "the magnitude of upcoming change will be stunning."

Keen On… Big Data: Why UC Berkeley Might Have An Edge Over Stanford [TCTV]

May 30, 6:19PM

Screen Shot 2012-05-29 at 4.20.11 PMBig data is not only hot in the startup world but also in the university. Stanford, with its intimate access to Silicon Valley is most readily associated with the study of big data. But UC Berkeley, the other great university in the Bay Area, is hot on Stanford's heels in terms of making sense of our new data driven economy. And later this week (May 31-June 1), Berkeley is hosting a conference about big data entitled Data Edge which promises to explore many of the most interesting questions about defining, understanding and extracting value from big data.

Microsoft Launches Office 365 For Government

May 30, 5:52PM

office_365_logoGoogle scored an important win over Microsoft a few weeks ago when it won a $35 million U.S. government contract to bring its cloud-based office solution to the Department of the Interior. Microsoft's legacy solutions, of course, remain a staple in government offices, but as more and more agencies want to move their productivity and collaboration services to the cloud, Microsoft is running the risk of losing out in this lucrative market. Today, however, the company is launching a new service that should give more of its government customers, which tend to have very strict data security and privacy regulations, the option to move to the cloud. Microsoft's new Office 365 for Government is, in the company's own words, "a new multi-tenant service that stores US government data in a segregated community cloud."

If The Spec Is Dead, So Is The Nexus Tablet

May 30, 5:47PM

Nexus-6-ReplicantsIt seems the much-rumored Google Nexus Tablet is nearing release. Citing Basemark benchmarking reports, the device is supposedly codenamed Grouper, running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and employing a 7-inch, 1280 x 768 display powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3. If true, this means the upcoming tablet will likely lack 4G wireless connectivity since Nvidia's latest SoC is incompatible with current 4G chipsets. Without 4G, and since this is a forward-thinking Nexus device, it's safe to say that the tablet will lack a data wireless radio of any sort and will instead ship with just WiFi. Besides, even without the compatibility issues (which might be resolved), Google will not be able to launch a wireless-enabled tablet at a Kindle Fire price. They can't in essence eat their Jelly Bean and have it too.

True&Co Takes $2M Seed Funding From First Round, SoftTech, Others To Shake Up The Bra Industry

May 30, 5:40PM

True&Co logoThe women's liberation movement once taught ladies to cast off their bras in solidarity and empowerment; now a new startup, founded by two women, is inverting that formula to make sure that when you put it back on, that bra fits like a glove. True&Co is launching an online bra fitting service and shop that takes a very traditional (and tedious) process -- finding bras you like that actually fit well -- and makes it quick and kind of fun, and it is doing it with $2 million in seed funding from a great list of investors: First Round Capital, SoftTech VC, Aileen Lee, Softbank Capital and former LinkedIn executive Ellen Levy. (Lee's investment comes from her new, yet-to-be-named seed fund, True says.)

ShareMyPlaylists Relaunches Spotify App Based On Hand-Curated Playlists

May 30, 5:21PM

Screen Shot 2012-05-30 at 18.20.39ShareMyPlaylists was the first site to allow the sharing of Spotify playlists (launched 2009). It's now relaunched its music discovery Spotify app based its 91,000 hand-curated playlists. The site competes with the record label Spotify apps like Digster (from Universal Music) and Filtr (Sony Music) but its advantage is that it allows music from all labels and allows user generated content - something the labels get nervous about.

Educational App Maker Mindshapes Picks Up $4M Round Led By Index; Adds Big 5 Publishers To Magic Town

May 30, 1:15AM

magic town lionAnother funding announcement that underscores what big business kids' and educational apps can be. Mindshapes, a UK-based developer of interactive learning apps, has picked up a $4 million round of funding led by Index Ventures, with Richmond Park Partners and existing investors also participating. The news caps off an eventful couple of weeks for Mindshapes. Earlier in the month, it had launched a flagship app, Magic Town, which Mindshapes calls the first virtual world based on picture book characters. Magic Town, a highly visual app, incorporates content licensed from Hachette Group, Simon & Schuster and Penguin Group, among others, into e-learning tasks. Mindshapes is ramping up content on Magic Town quickly: it currently contains content from 70 popular picture books but aims to have 200 titles in there by year's end.

Now our sources say the price is considerably higher, more in the neighborhood of $1 billion.

While the terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, Groupon has made a run of acquisitions over the last six months, and this move is likely one being made for talent. Not only that but the daily deals behemoth is looking to create more defined inroads with local mom and pop restaurants in its quest to become "the OS for local commerce," and adding Breadcrumb and its technology to the team is a step in that direction.

Google Brings ChromeOS To The Desktop, Launches Its First Chromebox

May 29, 10:30PM

chromebox_largeGoogle, together with its partner Samsung, launched a new Chromebook and its first desktop Chromebox today. The most important change to the new Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is that it is significantly faster. While earlier versions featured a battery-friendly Intel Atom chip, these first Chromebooks often felt underpowered. This new version features an Intel Core chip, as well as 4GB of RAM, an HD camera, two USB 2.0 ports and a 1280x800 display. Pricing starts at $449 for the WiFi-only version. While this is a nice update, what's more interesting here is the launch of Google's first Chromebox ($329), a Mac Mini-like desktop version of the Chromebook that features more ports than the Chromebook, though it is missing an SD card reader. Otherwise, though, its specs are pretty similar to the laptop version. This is the first time Google is officially putting ChromeOS on a desktop machine, something it hopes will make the browser-centric operating system more appealing to business customers.

Why Facebook Is Still The Perfect Startup (Slides)

May 29, 10:16PM

Facebook and mobile walled gardensFacebook had another tough day today in the public markets, with shares now trading at around $28 after debuting less than two weeks ago at $42.05. Good timing, then, for a new slideshow report out today from the boutique French consulting firm faberNovel, which encourages us to look at the bigger picture, and why, in its words, Facebook is "the perfect startup." The mammoth slideshow is an annual thing for faberNovel, which picks one company to tackle each year -- others have included how Amazon controls e-commerce, how Apple dominates, and what could go wrong with Google. Like those before, the one out today on Facebook is a deep-dive into the company, and it looks not just at the origins of the social network, but what sets it apart from other attempts at global social networks -- and other startups. (And by the way, faberNovel sees all this drama and attention on the IPO as just "one point on a startup trajectory." Some investors may not feel quite the same.)

Morgan to help the company evaluate their financial strategies going forward.

Bitly Goes Beyond Link Shortening, But Its Users Are Not Amused

May 29, 8:25PM

bitly logoBitly launched a major update and redesign of its link shortening service today that, in the eyes of many of its users, de-emphasizes some of its core feature. Instead of being able to just copy and paste a link, users now have to go through a few extra steps to get their shortened links, for example. This extra complexity brings many new features to the service, but some of its users are anything but happy about the changes.

Facebook Has Lost About $35 Billion In Value Since IPO As Shares Dip Below $29

May 29, 7:31PM

Screen Shot 2012-05-29 at 12.51.12 PMPain, pain, and more pain for Facebook's stock. Facebook sunk into the $20s for the first time today, declining about 9 percent as options trading started. The decline also came a day after a third wave of reports came out about a Facebook phone, which would push the company into the risky and expensive world of building hardware. Shares hit a new low of $28.65 and have closed nearly 10 percent lower at $28.84. After-hours trading has the company down another 0.5 percent to $28.69. That gives the company a market capitalization of $79.02 billion, down from $115 billion market cap Facebook opened at on the day of its IPO when it started trading at $42.05 a share.** (That said, if you're a glass-is-half-full kind of person, Facebook is now cheap, cheap, cheap!)

Game Closure Poaches Zynga's CTO Of Mobile To Lead HTML5 Game Development

May 29, 6:51PM

l_desegur_game closureLast we heard from Game Closure, the young startup had just turned down offers from Zynga and Facebook on its way to a $12 million raise from Highland Capital, Greylock, Benchmark, General Catalyst, and more. Even in spite of $100 million-plus offers, Game Closure CEO Michael Carter tells us that the startup is not eager to sell -- not now, and not in the future. Yet, stealing high-placed executives at the big gaming companies? Not a problem. Today, Game Closure, which is building a game development environment and SDK that makes it easy for developers to create, host, and deploy HTML5, cross-platform, multiplayer games, is announcing that it has poached Laurent Desegur away from Zynga, making the engineer and executive VP of Mobile Engineering. Until recently, Desegur had been CTO of Zynga Mobile, on top of being a veteran of Netflix, Big Fish Games, Amazon, Apple, and EA -- to name a few.

Doing It Wrong: Irish Newspaper Licensing Organization Asks Women's Charity To Pay For Links

HTC Evo 4G LTE Review: Initial Impressions (Hands-On Photos)

May 29, 5:41PM

photo8Evo. It's one of the few HTC/Sprint models to make a splash in the mobile ocean, and after a brief stay at U.S. customs, the latest iteration should do the same. The Evo 4G LTE is the most powerful Evo to date, with a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and 1GB of RAM under the hood. But these specs are in no way novel, which means that quite a bit comes down to HTC's software offerings and design language.

This Sassy Little Robot Lets Your Friends Follow You Around With Telepresence

May 29, 5:15PM

mh2_4-1338278337573Although one could argue that Facetime and Skype are already nearly perfect telepresence systems, there's definitely some value in having a jolly little robot sit on your shoulder and transmit, in real time, everything you see and hear to a friend far away. Right? Please say I'm right? This experimental robot is called the Miniature Humanoid 2 or MH2 and was built in Japan by Yuichi Tsumaki, Fumiaki Ono, and Taisuke Tsukuda of Yamagata University in Japan. The robot requires a big honking backpack so it's a little bit cumbersome but essentially the MH2 can move around on your shoulder as you move around the world, creating a sort of Master/Blaster relationship or, more likely, a Kuato/host human situation.

iPhone App Downloads Dropped Again In April, As Apple's Bot Crackdown Continues

May 29, 4:21PM

gtekna-botMobile app downloads continued to decline in April and the cost to acquire loyal users picked up, reports mobile marketing firm Fiksu in its latest report out today. This downward trend was expected, as no major events sparked app discovery during the month, explains Fiksu CEO Micah Adler. However, mobile app marketers were particularly aggressive in the social networking and games categories during April, both of which experienced volatility throughout the month. With the former (social networking), the reason had to do with the $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, which drew increased attention to the category. There were also a number of new game releases in April, which led to increased interest and competition among the developer community in that category, as well.

More FB IPO Fallout? Russia's Leading Social Network Vkontakte's IPO 'Postponed Indefinitely'

May 29, 4:05PM

Work At A Startup: Weebly, Codecademy, And Stripe On Startup Recruiting [TCTV]

May 29, 1:28AM

recruitingEarlier this month, Y Combinator held its Work At A Startup Event, where many of its alumni took the stage — not to pitch investors (as is the case at the incubator's enormous demo day), but instead engineers who might be lured to work at the startups in question. After the presentations, I grabbed some one-on-one time with a few of the presenters (Weebly's David Rusenko, Codecademy's Zach Sims, and Stripe's John Collison) to answer some basic questions: Why should someone work for your startup? And what's it like to recruit right now?

The Art of Raising Seed: You're Either Hot, Or You Make Your Own Heat

May 28, 10:35PM

626px-Dandelion_seed_dispersalI'd started raising 3 rounds. One fell apart and the others raised $1M & $1.3M in a few weeks each. The startup game is a marathon and while I'm not yet qualified to give advice about crossing the finish line, I feel like I know a lot about the first 5 miles… It's from that perspective I give the following advice to fellow founders who are looking to raise their seed rounds.

As Layoffs Loom, RIM's Chief Legal Officer Steps Down

May 28, 9:55PM

office_5x3_med-resThere goes another one -- RIM announced today that Chief Legal Officer Karima Bawa will soon be leaving the company. This is RIM's second major departure in as many weeks, with RIM sales head Patrick Spence leaving the ailing smartphone maker last Wednesday. At the time, sources pointed to audio electronics company Sonos as his likely landing spot, though neither Spence nor Sonos have officially commented on the situation. Unlike Spence, who reportedly jumped ship after being passed over for the company's vacant COO spot (Sony Mobile EVP Kristian Tear eventually got the job), Bawa's situation seems much less contentious. After spending nearly twelve years with the company (two of which were in her current spot), she's finally looking to retire.

Death To Powerpoint! Piccsy Rethinks The Pitchdeck, Gets Tons Of Pageviews

May 28, 6:53PM

Piccsy PitchdeckYour Powerpoint pitchdeck is so boring. So. Freaking. Boring. Although tech bloggers aren't sent startup's actual pitchdecks as often as investors are (thankfully), we're still walked through them on dreadful, "let me read to you from my Powerpoint" phone calls more often than should be socially acceptable. That's why when image aggregator Piccsy, which is simultaneously a competitor to Pinterest as well as a top 20 content source for the site,  pinged us to take a look at its pitch deck, we were pleasantly surprised. A pitchdeck that's actually fun to read? Can such a thing exist?

Yahoo! Licenses Platform To Reach Out To The Arab Web

May 28, 6:26PM

Screen Shot 2012-05-28 at 19.24.16We're currently used to more drama-oriented stories coming out of Yahoo!, but that doesn't mean business hasn't entirely halted there. Yamli is a service which offers a smart Arabic keyboard that allows users who type in Latin characters to find -in real-time - the most accurate equivalent Arabic term. It debuted in 2007 but has become an important part of a market which serves hundreds of millions of users worldwide. The platform also offers services to help navigating the 'Arabic web'. Today Yahoo has acquired a license to use Yamli for its Arabic service, Yahoo! Maktoob, which will see it integrate Yamli's existing technologies into a new product, "3arrebni," or "Arabize me" in other words.

How Face(.com) Recognition Could Fit Into Facebook Mobile

May 28, 6:13PM

klik-1Face.com's CEO has shrugged off rumors that it is being acquired by Facebook for up to $100 million when we asked. But the addition of its facial recognition tech to Facebook's mobile apps could make sure friend tagging continues as the social network's user base shifts away from desktops. In fact, about 45% of users of Face.com's app KLIK end up sharing their photos on Facebook, which shows how popular mobile facial recognition could be.

Got Money To Burn? iPad Prototype Appears On eBay, Shows Off Its Two Dock Connectors

May 28, 6:05PM

H92Sn - ImgurEvery gadget that graces our shelves goes through plenty of tweaks and changes during its design phase, but it isn't too often that we get an actual glimpse of those scrapped iterations. It can be tremendously cool to see what our stuff could have looked like in some alternate timeline, and a new eBay listing reveals a peculiar iPad that may have been. The listing is for an early first-generation iPad prototype, and unlike the final model it sports two dock connectors, allowing the iPad to be docked in either portrait or landscape mode.

Apple Rejects Apps Integrating Micro-Payments Service Flattr, Company Claims "It's Not the End"

May 28, 6:00PM

flattr-logoIt may not be the end, but the prognosis doesn't look good. Social micro-payments platform Flattr is taking an unkind hit in terms of its future growth opportunities on mobile, the company details on its blog this morning. After being integrated into popular third-party podcast manager Instacast back in February, Apple decided at the beginning of May to reject the app from the iTunes App Store due to its Flattr integration. The result? The only way Instacast could get back into the app store was to change the user flow in the app to direct the actual "flattr" (as the micro-payment process is called) to take place in the Safari web browser instead. Not an ideal user experience, Apple admits, but it's as required by the App Store Review Guidelines.

Google Apps For Business Gets ISO 27001 Certification

May 28, 5:45PM

certify_pointGoogle just announced that its Google Apps for Business service has earned ISO 27001 certification. This certifies that Google is following the standard ISO information security management protocols and best practices "for the systems, technology, processes and data centers serving Google Apps for Business." If you're a startup or individual user, chances are you don't care too much about whether a company you are working with is following any of the ISO's over 19,000 standards. This certification, however, will likely give give larger and more highly regulated businesses (and the executives who sign off on these deals) the necessary reassurances that moving to Google's cloud solutions is safe.

Push Level Agreement

May 28, 5:00PM

20120527-200328.jpgThat's the big secret Wall Street is struggling with, that push is the monetization model of mobile. Who cares what the UI is, or what the advertising surface is. The moment a push hits your screen, it comes down to a binary decision: do I want to know more, or do I already know enough. To make that decision, we need social metadata to help out. Who said this, who retweeted it, who @mentioned it, and how are these signals parsed to prioritize the queue.

Backstage at Disrupt, Cornell's Dan Huttenlocher is Bringing Big Red to the Big Apple

May 28, 3:00PM

Screen shot 2012-05-27 at 10.28.50 PMCornell University made big news earlier in the year when it was announced the Ivy League school, located in upstate New York, would open a technology campus in New York City. Leading the charge for Big Red will be Dan Huttenlocher, dean of computing and information science -- and a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Dean Huttenlocher was kind enough to come backstage after his session to discuss more details about the campus and program. Cornell will build a technology campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City, which will house a full master's program that combines academic research in computer science and engineering along with a variety of practical training programs. While the curriculum will focus mostly on software, Huttenlocher did hint at the possibility of having programs focusing on smaller-scale hardware, as well. This video would be of interest to folks who are in the New York technology community, as well as those could have some type of relationship with the campus in the future.

The Authors Of Space Quest Are Back With Another Adventure

May 28, 1:59PM

Dome_Postcard_1024x768If you're an older gamer, you will remember the holy trinity of Sierra RPGs - King's Quest, Space Quest, and Police Quest. All three of these games used something called "imagination" and "storytelling" to immerse early gamers in an Ad Lib sound card-induced gaming coma. Now you can relive those heady days with a new game by the makers of Space Quest, Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe (aka "The Two Guys from Andromeda"). Their new game, called SpaceVenture, is a refresh of the old Sierra series and promises spills, chills, and horrible jokes. It's getting funded on Kickstarter as we speak.

GameStop Rolls Out Android Tablets With Pre-Loaded Games To 1,600 Stores

May 28, 1:49PM

galstopDiversification is the key to longevity. With that likely in mind, GameStop just announced widespread availability of Android tablets throughout its chain of retail stores. This comes after a 200 store trial that started last October. These aren't ordinary Android tablets, though. GameStop is pre-loading the Samsung, Asus, Acer, and Toshiba with extra gaming titles such as Sonic CD, Riptide, the Kongregate Arcade app and a free issue of GameStop's gaming mag, Game Informer. Thanks to these extras and with prices that are inline with other stores, GameStop actually has a chance to capture a bit of the tablet market.

Fast Track To A Facebook Phone — Buy INQ Mobile?

May 28, 1:21PM

Facebook-phone-INQAs the heat around the "Facebook Phone" story gets higher, our thoughts turn to the days a couple of years ago when it emerged Facebook had been thinking about developing an actual phone. Back then, it transpired that Facebook was working with INQ Mobile on a smartphone. The phone duly emerged - the INQ1 - and did indeed have great Facebook integration. Even if it hasn't exactly been a smash hit, it's fared well enough. Indeed, HTC has also released their own "Facebook" phone, such HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa respectively. INQ's runs on Google's Android operating system, but with deeper Facebook integration. When asked about the INQ phone back in 2010, Zuckerberg said it wasn't "some massive big thing". But quite clearly, a phone is now firmly on the agenda.

A Bit Too Much Klout: User Says He Can Sign In To Someone Else's Account

May 28, 1:06PM

kloutIt's not clear if this is a one-off glitch, a signal of a bigger issue -- or a way of pumping up/sabotaging Klout scores for those who care. But it's not great news any way you spin it, if it's true: a Klout user has gotten in touch to say that when he accesses the social influence ratings service, he is getting signed in to Klout not as himself but as someone else. Using an HTC Sensation device running the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android, IT consultant Halil Kabaca,of Istanbul, Turkey-based Novarum Consulting, tells us that when he goes on to Klout via the phone's mobile browser, he is being signed in automatically as someone completely different -- someone he doesn't know at all who happens to work for Adobe in business development (see screenshots of Kabaca's and the other guy's profiles after the break).

EU Privacy Directive: Why All The Fuss? Just Be Open With Users

May 28, 12:45PM

markEU Cookie legislation is now in force across Europe, but in a last minute change on Friday, the UK's information commissioner amended the way it will be implemented in the UK. It's now the case that sites will only have to obtain 'implied consent' from users not explicit consent. This is much friendlier for businesses but means the UK is now out of the step with the EU on privacy online and the transparency of cookies. In the middle of a recession, UK businesses probably won't lose too much sleep. This is a much more pragmatic approach and most websites have yet to even comply with the legislation. In this guest post, Mark Macdonald, of Skimlinks argues sites should still consider being up-front with users about their use of cookies.

Protip: Do Not Post A Pic Of A Pile Of Cash To Facebook

May 28, 12:43PM

21087284As tempting as it might seem, please do not upload a picture of a bunch of cash and then upload it to a social network. That's just dumb. But that's also what one 17-year-old Australian girl did only to have two robbers armed with a knife and a club show up at her house. The story goes that a 17-year-old girl was helping her grandma. Likely somewhere in between vacuuming and feather dusting, the two started counting money, and, as we all know, the elderly tend to keep a good sum of cash on hand. Apparently the 17-year-old snapped a picture of the pile which was likely fanned-out in the traditional gangster style. This girl then uploaded the picture to Facebook.

Yandex.Factory Seed Funding Bears Fruit: SocialMart Launches Social Shopping With Yandex.Market

May 28, 10:01AM

socialmart logoIt's not a given that a leader in search can successfully pivot into other areas like social media -- just ask Google -- but a new service launching in Russia today, from that country's search leader Yandex, shows one route a company with a lot of smarts can take to make sure they remain a central player in the social game. Today sees the launch of SocialMart, a social shopping startup financed by Yandex (through its seed-funding program Yandex.Factory), and powered by Yandex (via Yandex.Market), but is not Yandex itself. Both Yandex and SocialMart are banking on the fact that the rising popularity of ecommerce in Russia is inevitably going to cross over with the equally popular trend of social networking: up to now, those twains have not met, unlike in other markets, where services like Mertado (now part of Groupon), Sneakpeeq, and Fab have been running away with the "social shopping" banner, picking up users and funding in the process.

It'll Be A Miracle If The Facebook Phone Doesn't Suck

May 28, 5:47AM

Screen Shot 2012-05-27 at 10.30.22 PMHere we go again: Facebook is apparently trying for the third time to get its phone project off the ground -- snatching up iOS design and engineering talent left and right Nick Bilton is hearing. We're hearing (and seeing) similar regarding iOS talent, but with one caveat: Word on the street is that few mobile design whizzes actually want to work at Facebook, but everyone has their price, and post-IPO Mark Zuckerberg is willing to pay that price, whatever it is.
