Averail Raises $6M To Help Enterprises Share Documents On Mobile Devices
Mar 20, 11:30AM
Stealthy startup Averail has raised $6 million in Series A funding led by Foundation Capital and Storm Ventures. In addition, the company has appointed Paul Holland, General Partner at Foundation Capital, and Tae Hea Nahm, Managing Director at Storm Ventures, to its Board of Directors. While some of the details have not been released, Averail is developing a mobile content management technology that wants to help employees share enterprise documents on mobile devices. Founded by John Drewry and Rahul Sharma, the company plans to use the funds towards product development and expansion.
BBC's iPlayer The Latest To Join Microsoft's Xbox Platform, Free And UK-Only For Now
Mar 20, 10:48AM
Another big content partner for Microsoft and its Xbox Live Platform, and another win for those in favor of all TV eventually going over-the-top rather than through a pay-TV provider: the BBC has now made its popular catch-up/on-demand TV and radio service, iPlayer, accessible via the Xbox console, free of charge. Although we've seen the BBC make some moves to offer iPlayer in international markets as a paid service, for now it is only available in the UK. The BBC says it is the first broadcaster to join up with Xbox 360 to make its content free: other content providers have become part of the "Gold" service that requires an extra fee. The deal announced today also marks another first for the BBC: as with other services that run on the Xbox, when you use it in connection with a Kinect, you can navigate the iPlayer with voice and gesture controls.
Oink Users: Need A New Home For Your Data? Turn That Frown Upside Down With Cheers
Mar 20, 9:27AM
This piece of news brought to you by Jotly. No, no. Just kidding. Last week, uber-founder Kevin Rose and the team of eight sterling engineers and designers that comprised his startup lab, Milk, closed the doors on their first mobile app, Oink, just four months after it appeared on the App Store, before heading over to Google. The abrupt Oink-icide of course raised some important questions: What will happen to the app's thousands of users and their directionless Oink data? Is no one thinking of them? Well, it turns out there is someone -- that relentlessly positive new guy on the block: An app called Cheers.
6waves Lolapps Sheds Most Of Its Development Team To Focus on Publishing Games
Mar 20, 1:06AM
6waves Lolapps, the social gaming company that was formed out of a merger just half a year ago, shed most of its employees on the development side today to focus on publishing other studios' titles. The decision today seems to undo some of what that merger agreement created last July and we hear it had to do with a limited runway of cash. Last summer, social gaming company Lolapps merged with game publisher 6waves to form a new entity that was a dual producer and publisher. They then raised funding from Korean gaming giant Nexon and Insight Venture Partners. The amount they raised was undisclosed, but an SEC filing showed a $35 million round. The company insists, however, that the merger is still in place and Lolapps is not being spun out. They didn't disclose how many people were laid off.
When It Comes To Phones, Men Are More Price-Sensitive (According to Vuclip)
Mar 20, 12:46AM
For its latest user survey, mobile video service Vuclip decided to look at why people buy the phones they do — specifically, at the differences between men and women. And indeed, there was a real contrast between male and female respondents. When men were asked about the most important factor when choosing a phone, the most popular answer (chosen by 33 percent) was price, followed closely by features (31 percent). When women were asked the same question, the most popular answer was features (37 percent), followed by screen size (21 percent). Only 18 percent of women said that price was their biggest concern.
Google Steps In To Defend Hotfile From "Overbroad And Ill-Conceived" MPAA Lawsuit
Mar 19, 11:05PM
Cyberlocker services are under attack from every direction: not only are their services looking less and less necessary as more personal file-sharing services (like Dropbox) become popular, but the services they do offer are viewed by the media industry as solely used for evil. In the wake of the Megaupload takedown, many cyberlocker sites are voluntarily shutting down, for fear of being sued or raided. Hotfile is one of the sites in question, and they haven't escaped the wrath of the MPAA. There are a couple lawsuits between the two pending, and most recently the MPAA tried to get the site shut down summarily. But Google has taken a sudden interest in the case and issued an amicus brief with some choice words for the MPAA's tactics.
Dave Morin Talks Path 2.1, Facebook's IPO Effect, And Those New Funding Rumors [TCTV]
Mar 19, 10:49PM
TechCrunch TV talked to Path co-founder and CEO Dave Morin last week while we were at the South By Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, Texas. It's always interesting to talk to Morin, who is widely regarded as one of the most well-connected and in-the-know entrepreneurs in today's web startup landscape. In this interview, Morin discussed the latest update to the Path app, version 2.1, which was released earlier this month. We also got his thoughts on Path's larger API strategy, what Facebook's IPO will mean for the startup world, his favorite apps of the moment (he is yet another of Highlight's big-name fans), and Path's rumored plans for another round of funding.
Plancast Founder Mark Hendrickson Joins Obvious-Incubated Lift As Head Of Product
Mar 19, 10:45PM
Last June, Biz Stone and Evan Williams teamed up with long-time collaborator (and early Twitter employee) Jason Goldman to dust off and re-start The Obvious Corporation -- the very idea incubator that produced the micro-blogging service we know now as "The Twitters". The goal with Obvious was to help develop new projects, lending seed funding, product support, and office space when needed. Several months later, the idea angels announced their first incubation project, a startup called Lift, an app development platform founded by Tony Stubblebine and Jon Crosby. And, today, the co-founders are officially announcing the addition of Mark Hendrickson as Head of Product.
Daily Deals Aggregator Frugalo Acquired By TwitVid (But No, It's Not Getting Into Deals)
Mar 19, 10:00PM
Frugalo, a daily deals aggregation platform that emerged from AngelPad's third group of startups last fall, is being acquired by social video site TwitVid. As you may have guessed, the move was more about bringing Frugalo's founders on board than it was an indication that TwitVid is now interested in the daily deals market. However, some of the personalization technology in use at Frugalo will make its way over to the social network as a part of the deal. Frugalo's founders, CEO Mike Cieri and Scott Reynolds, say they discovered a shared passion with what the TwitVid team is doing, given both companies' focus on the creation of social experiences to help users discover and share. But finding kindred spirits at TwitVid wasn't the only thing that pushed Frugalo in this direction - the changes in the daily deal space also influenced the founders' decision, they admit.
Bookmark It: Bliss Control, A One-Stop Shop For Updating Your Social Network Profile Settings
Mar 19, 9:51PM
I'm interrupting your tech news flow to tell you about a nifty little tool you'll probably want to bookmark for later. It's called Bliss Control, and it comes from the same folks that brought you the email notifications management utility called Notification Control (and seriously - check that one out, too, if you get too many social media updates in via email. Inbox savior!). Expanding on the simple use case of its predecessor, Bliss Control also provides a one-stop-shop for managing various aspects of your online accounts. Except this time, instead of providing a link list that connects you with the right page on websites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare and more where you can disable email notifications, this new service provides a single directory of links to manage all your other social media settings.
Hollywood Agents Talk About Technology In Entertainment [TCTV]
Mar 19, 9:32PM
Brent Weinstein and Eric Kuhn stopped by the studio to talk about technology in entertainment, and these guys are worth listening to. Brent is Head of Digital Media for United Talent Agency in Los Angeles, where he oversees the agency's work in online entertainment, social media, video games, and the agency's digital consulting practice. Eric is the department's Head of Social Media. UTA is one of the premier agencies in Hollywood, repping the likes of Johnny Depp, Seth Rogen and Ice Cube. So, these guys are kind of a big deal. Ever read the NBA's Twitter feed? Eric is the guy who started it, and he also created and ran the social media operations for CBS News and CNN before moving to Los Angeles (and UTA).
Apple Quantifies Their iPad "Record Weekend": 3 Million Sold In 3 Days
Mar 19, 9:10PM
Earlier today, AT&T announced record sales and activation numbers for the new iPad. During the Apple dividend/buyback call, Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke of a "record weekend" for the new iPad. Unfortunately, neither had actual numbers to share. And that was odd since normally when Apple has a new record number to crow about, crow they do. This was more of an Amazon maneuver where "records" are set by products selling 4x of another unstated number. Turns out Tim Cook just didn't want to spoil the surprise. Apple has just issued a release with their actual sales numbers for the first weekend of the new iPad. And the numbers are big. Very big. Three million iPads sold in the first three days big.
Facebook To Court Minority Biz Groups With New Head Of Community Engagement
Mar 19, 9:08PM
To work with Congress and encourage minority-owned small businesses to use its marketing products, I've learned Facebook has just created a new Head of Community Engagement role to be filled by Susan Gonzales. Until now, Gonzales was a full-time consultant in Facebook's DC office where she's led external affairs since August. Before that she was the VP of Comcast's community foundation, and is currently the Vice Chairperson of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Gonzales will manage outreach to diverse communities, be a liaison to key Congress members, and help run Facebook's Small Business Boost and digital citizenship "roadshows". Facebook could increase revenue and public support by putting this experienced relationship builder at the front of its education initiatives.
LG Spectrum Review: Head-To-Head With The Nitro HD And Galaxy Nexus
Mar 19, 9:03PM
The LG Spectrum isn't necessarily my favorite phone. It's got pretty nice specs and a killer screen, but there's something to be said about the way a phone draws you in from across the room. I don't mean to get all romantic or dramatic about it, but it's still true: appearance matters. Windows Phones have that engaging, compelling live tile interface. The iPhone has its stunning design and piano black shine. Motorola's Razr has that crazy thin profile, and Samsung has the ultimate combo in the form of its Galaxy series: giant, gorgeous screens with beautiful design. LG doesn't really have that, and this is particularly apparent on the Spectrum. I've been spending the past few weeks with it (full review to follow), and despite the fact that it's pretty slick, has a gorgeous display, and packs badass specs, I can't get over the fact that it's ugly. But maybe you like the specs, and just want something that's as similar as possible to the Spectrum. Or maybe you want the latest and greatest? Well, that's why we put together this here infographic which pits the LG Spectrum against the Nitro HD and the Galaxy Nexus.
Adobe Revenue Up To $1.05B, Profits Down
Mar 19, 9:03PM
Adobe's earnings for the first quarter of 2011 were a mixed bag. The company met earnings expectations and revenue increased, but net income continued to fall. Adobe reported revenue of $1.05 billion, up from $1.03 billion during the same period last year, as well as earnings per share (on a non-GAAP basis) of 57 cents, meeting analyst estimates. Operating income declined to $387 million (from $400 million), and net income fell to $285 million (from $298 million).
A Fleet Of Pirate Bay Aerial Server Drones? Why Not?
Mar 19, 9:00PM
A slightly cryptic announcement by the Pirate Bay yesterday has the Internet speculating whether the site might have accidentally posted their April Fools joke early. "We're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air." You can be skeptical, it's all right. One does not simply launch a fleet of autonomous server drones. But the fundamental idea of physically inaccessible data is compelling even if this first, perhaps jesting, plan disappears into thin air.
Amazon Acquires Robot-Coordinated Order Fulfillment Company Kiva Systems For $775 Million In Cash
Mar 19, 8:40PM
Amazon has just announced that it will acquire order fulfillment company Kiva Systems for $775 million in cash. We've embedded the release below. Kiva Systems' interconnected hardware and software package is designed to streamline the process of picking, packing and shipping e-commerce products for delivery. The company uses hundreds of autonomous mobile robots and a sophisticated control software, to provide a fulfillment system for retailers.
Trying To Be Mint.com For Student Loans, Binksty Raises, Redesigns, Hits $10M In Debt-Under-View
Mar 19, 8:33PM
Last October, we wrote about Binksty, a young startup that aims to give college students saddled with debt a one-stop shop to manage loans, pay off debt, as well as educate them on the best ways to save money. The student loan situation in the U.S. was atrocious then, and it continues to be atrocious now. A recent report from the New York Times shows that the total balance of student loans is currently $870 billion. Not only that, but 40 percent of people under 30 have outstanding student loans, the average of which is $23,300. If that's not enough to make you cringe, I don't know what is.
If Barnes & Noble Wants To Take Its Nook Tablet Abroad, It Has A Lot Of Work To Do
Mar 19, 8:18PM
An enlightening and frustrating evening in equal measure this evening in London, where Barnes & Noble sponsored a Nook developer event and panel discussion on the state of the tablet market. The bookseller is definitely planning to launch its tablet outside of the U.S. -- the company has confirmed as much, and the fact that they're here in London attests to that -- but after a developer event very light on details and developer tools, a room full of developers decided that a lot more work needs to be done before B&N will be able to make a credible entry into the market here. On the plus side, the company's director of developer relations later gave some enlightening numbers on who it is that is using those devices in the U.S.
Fly Or Die: Highlight
Mar 19, 7:37PM
Opinions on the new break-out social location app Highlight certainly aren't in short supply. Alexia thinks that friend-of-friend notifications should be customizable and that women may have trouble getting on board with the idea of constantly broadcasting their location. Eldon thinks that Highlight goes past social networking to be a potential business card swapping service, leaps ahead of a similar style app called Bump. He also thinks that the new update is quite clever. Then of course, Mr. Butcher over in the UK thinks that Highlight is a recruiter's wet dream, while 500 Startups mentor Brenden Mulligan feels like SXSW wasn't necessarily the best launchpad for Highlight. But a few extra thoughts on the SXSW sweetheart can't hurt, right?
