Some people are afraid that online shopping will lead to the death of brick and mortar retail (and a spate of empty storefronts on our streets.) But
Storenvy, the online marketplace
that lets independent merchants sell their wares in their own digital storefronts, is one of a number of web companies that's making a reverse commute of sorts -- bringing their web businesses into
meatspace. Storenvy opened its pop-up shop in San Francisco with the intention that it would be a temporary 30-day thing. Four months later, it's become a pretty popular destination, and the company's CEO
Jon Crawford now says that he is looking at opening more brick and mortar locations elsewhere in the U.S. in the months ahead.

Google, the
worldwide leader in mobile advertising, today made another move that could help consolidate its position a little bit further. The company today announced to developers that it would be shutting down
AdWhirl, a platform that let app developers switch between different ad networks on the fly. AdWhirl was a part of AdMob,
acquired by the mobile ad network after a
flurry of competition, just months before
AdMob was acquired itself by Google for $750 million.

George Lucas and
Steven Spielberg aren't so bullish on the future of the film industry. At a talk at USC, the pair agreed that it's on track to have a "massive implosion". At the core of their argument: there just isn't enough time in the day for consumers to support all the films released in theaters. Films are competing with all the content and options that the Internet provides.

Today was the Extreme Startups Spring 2013 Demo Day in Toronto, and the cohort of five startups all delivered. The list this time included Brika, Instaradio, Koge, Polychart and Sciencescape. It was an incredibly diverse group, targeting verticals ranging from ecommerce to media to business intelligence, but it's rare to se a group so focused and prepared on the day. That's a credit to the Extreme Startups prep process, and to the general maturity of the companies involved.

You know those people who put tape over their laptop's webcam to keep digital peeping toms at bay? They're not crazy. A new proof of concept is making the rounds today that demonstrates how a hacker can snap pics off your webcam, right through the browser, with no consent required.

This summer the veteran Symbian platform, which started life back when handhelds weren't phones but PDAs, will quietly pass into development history. Or at least its primary supporter over the years -- Nokia -- will cease producing any new handsets running the OS. So what better time to take a look back at the platform that powered so many devices and dominated the mobile landscape for so long.

When digital publishing platform
Glossi launched
its public beta last December, it hadn't quite addressed one of the big questions that revolves around any "future of media"-type platform — how publishers are going to make money. Now the company has made its first move towards publisher monetization through a partnership with affiliate network
RewardStyle. Through the integration, RewardStyle members who create a Glossi (that's the name for both the publishing platform and for magazines created on the platform) should be able to access RewardStyle's directory of products, then drag-and-drop them into their content. Those products will then function as affiliate links, with the publisher paid a commission for the purchases that they drive. (Non-RewardStyle members using Glossi can also access the product directory, but without the monetization angle I'm guessing it's not quite as appealing.)

The ability to visualize geodata as a map is the latest feature GitHub is offering developers. The new capability adds to GitHub's family of visualization tools that now includes the ability to
render 3D models on the code-collaboration platform. According to the
GitHub blog, any ".geojson" file in a GitHub repository will now be automatically rendered as an interactive browsable map, annotated with a developer's geodata.

When
Dropbox bought Audiogalaxy late last year,
industry observers wondered if the cloud music player startup could turn into a new audio streaming product. But Audiogalaxy was promptly shut down, and the team is rumored to be working on other Dropbox projects.

I just got flashbacks of seeing congressmen debate on C-SPAN whether there were, in fact, any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Only a decade ago, Members of select intelligence committees saw identical pieces of evidence and came to vastly different conclusions. Now, it's happening again with the National Security Agency: Senator Mark Udall has
written, "We have not yet seen any evidence showing that the NSA's dragnet collection of Americans' phone records has produced any uniquely valuable intelligence."

VigLink is announcing an update to its
VigLink Convert product that should help affiliate links stay up-to-date. The company promises to make publishers more money through affiliate links, i.e. links to online merchants that can earn a commission if they lead to a purchase. With Convert, VigLink turns standard, existing links into affiliate links. (And it works with 30,000 online retailers.)

Google just
announced that it is retiring
Chrome Frame, its open source plug-in for bringing Google Chrome's JavaScript and rendering engine to legacy versions of Internet Explorer. The company cites the fact that legacy browsers like Internet Explorer 6 and 7 are now finally on the decline and that most people are now using modern browsers as the reason for this decision.

Last week,
Facebook announced that it will be streamlining the ad-buying process by eliminating more than half of its 27 ad units. Today it's taking one step towards that goal by announcing that it will be eliminating the Sponsored Results unit starting in July. The unit
officially launched in August 2012, allowing businesses to run ads in the "typeahead" results that show up when users enter a search query on Facebook.
The early Sponsored Results campaigns seemed to get a positive response, but the company says it noticed that most advertisers were buying those units to promote their apps and games — and its mobile app install ads and Page post link ads can achieve the same goals more effectively.

Thumbtack, a marketplace for local service providers, has raised a $12.5 million Series B led by
Sequoia Capital. When co-founder and CEO Marco Zappacosta told me about the funding, he said he's excited because Sequoia is "focused on building enduring, meaningful brands," and it's "making us their bet" in the local services market. Sequoia's Bryan Schreier is joining Thumbtack's board of directors, so I asked him via email why he picked Thumbtack.

Google today launched a large update to Google Maps that adds more than 1,000 new locations from around the world to the service’s Street View feature. These include numerous locations that can’t be reached by car, including the cathedral of Seville, the canals of Copenhagen and the Singapore Zoo. Overall, it seems, this update focuses on locations from Asia, Europe, Latin America, the U.S. and Canada. Google, of course, has long been expanding Street View’s reach beyond cities and rural streets, thanks to its backpack-like Trekker, tricycles and, most recently, its underwater Street View scooter. Today’s update, Google says, includes numerous historical landmarks and sports stadiums, but it’s also adding some ski slopes in Chile and other relatively unusual locations to its lineup. Today’s large rollout hints at the fact that Google is speeding up its Street View imaging efforts. Until now, it would often announce some of these projects individually. Now, however, it’s adding a huge amount of locations from around the world in one launch, even though quite a few of them are probably a first for the Street View team. All of this imagery, of course, is available on the web, as well as on Google Maps for Android and iPhone.

RingCentral has hired David Berman, a former high-ranking executive from WebEx, a move that shows the market significance of a cloud-based approach to routing calls to different mobile devices similarly if they were extensions on a phone tree. RingCentral is one of those companies that fits into new world of the work place by automating the phone tree. It abstracts the PBX just as software and service providers are abstracting almost any hardware you can imagine, turning every mobile device into an extension designed in particular for today's work. It helps remove the struggle that comes with typing in a password for a conference call while in the car or routing SMS messages to the right people. Berman brings a certain high-powered image to the company that will have to appeal to corporate IT executives who still have deep relationships with the PBX vendor crowd. But more so, it’s my bet he will use the web more than taking CEOs out for steak dinners. He does have SaaS chops to make RingCentral work. At WebEx, he helped drive sales through a web-based approach — something that's critical in today's sales and marketing world. In an interview, Berman said the PBX market is worth $100 billion. It's that market opportunity that he sees opening and a big reason he joined RingCentral. Berman started at WebEx in 1999 and stayed until 2008. According to LinkedIn, Berman is also on the WatchDox and Oovoo board of directors. He remains as chairman of Affectiva, a company with facial recognition technology spun out from MIT. In those first years at WebEx, Internet startups were getting battered by the market fallout and the overall economy suffered an overall malaise. Web conferencing, though, boomed, as it represented a way to cut down on the costs of travel. It was one of the first signs of a market that would prosper with the advent of a funky new way to work, using the Internet and a new breed of mobile devices. The PBX phone system still was the way to communicate; it symbolized the office of the IT age. Cool in its capabilities at the time, an office jockey had commands, touch-tone sequences really, to orchestrate communication. Taking calls. transferring, forwarding, conferencing — master it and the corporate network would wake up. The PBX served as the domain of the office admin — a seat of power, the CEO’s communications artery. But
