Swedish telecoms kit maker Ericsson has filed suit against mobile maker Samsung in the US for patent infringement. The move follows nearly two years of negotiations to renew a FRAND patent licensing agreement between the pair, according to Ericsson. It's unclear exactly which patents are involved but Ericsson said they relate to "a crucial system for technology sharing" for mass market comms.

Baidu shares have fallen 18% over the last quarter as investors worry that the search giant won't be able to monetize its mobile business quickly enough to outpace domestic competitors like
Qihoo 360 and
Tencent Holdings. But Baidu, known as China's Google, is confident that it will be able to remake itself as a platform provider for both mobile and PC.

After hype cometh the fall. Gamification -- the catch-all term for rewards, incentives and loyalty services -- has become a
very popular way to get users engaged in an increasingly noisy world of apps and online life. But
Gartner says in a
new study that many of the apps using the technique are becoming noise in themselves: by 2014, 80% of all gamified apps will fail to do what they've set out to do, the analyst house predicts.

When you visit a review on Google Play for an app, book, song or movie, you
won't have to worry as much about whether someone is sheepishly hiding behind a computer firing off nasty words, as Google has now flipped on the switch to display your Google+ name and profile picture with all reviews you add to the store. I'm not so sure this is the best thing in the world, 100%, as you don't have an option to turn it off. I like the idea of inviting people to share their thoughts, and mixing in real names and pictures if chosen by the user. That way, people know what reviews they might want to trust over other ones that are anonymous and thus, perhaps shady. The company seems to be choosing quality over quantity, though.

In the Silicon Valley Distortion Field, it can seem like everyone is learning to code -- that coding has become cool. Either way you slice it, talented programmers are in demand, and, as a result, there is now a
litany of platforms and tutorials that propose to help anyone and everyone become a code-slinger, often from the comfort of their favorite sofa (and browser).

Some 17,800 Facebook users
have commented on proposed
changes to Facebook's governing documents, enough to trigger a vote on whether they'll go into effect. Today the Electronic Privacy Information Center
asked Mark Zuckerberg to withdraw the proposal to combine user data from Facebook and Instagram and eliminate the same right to vote that users will assert in a seven-day period starting soon.

The
Pen Type-A is a pen milled from a block of type 304 stainless steel that should last at least 50 years. It looks and feels great, and it's a good writing tool as it uses Pilot's
Hi-Tec C ink cartridges. The ruler acts as a sleeve. It is precisely manufactured so that the pen slowly slides in and out, like a pneumatic cylinder. It's a pen for pen geeks.

Path's growth trajectory is leading it to Asia: CEO Dave Morin
said that people in Japan and Korea were behind the mobile social network's second wave of new users after the release of Path 2.0, that China is the app's second-largest market after the U.S. and that it's adding
more users in Asia than it is in Western markets. Now Path is capitalizing on all that by building out its operation in the region, appointing Kimihiko Shindo as its new general manager for Japan/Asia.

PRWeb has just
put out a press release about the fraudulent press release it released (and we
erroneously reported) this morning. Ha. >From the press release:
"PRWeb transmitted a press release for ICOA that we have since learned was fraudulent. The release was not issued or authorized by ICOA. Vocus reviews all press releases and follows an internal process designed to maintain the integrity of the releases we send out every day. Even with reasonable safeguards identity theft occurs, on occasion, across all of the major wire services. We have removed the fraudulent release and turned the matter over to the proper authorities for further investigation."

Netflix is
open sourcing its libraries for connecting the numerous services it uses on Amazon Web Services to keep its business running. Dubbed
Hystrix, the offering is just another example of how Netflix has become the model for how to deploy and maintain a cloud infrastructure.

Google is now legally responsible for every crazy thing on the Internet--at least, in Australia. The Supreme Court of Victoria
fined Google $200,000 for not removing defamatory rumors linking music promoter, Milorad Trkulja, to organized crime. The court reasoned that Google is a "publisher" because it displays content and links to offending websites.

I love a good comic jam. Back in my salad days at college, this generally involved sitting in a smokey dive bar with mostly strangers passing around notebooks of large format sketchpads taking turns penciling, inking and coloring panels working towards building a complete story one panel at a time. It's the prefect experience to try to replicate on the web, and that's just what Tyler Hutchison has done with We Draw Comics.

Twitter and Facebook usually aren't the last click before an ecommerce buy, but that doesn't mean they didn't inspire or influence the purchase. Yet
IBM's Black Friday report says Twitter delivered 0% of referral traffic and Facebook sent just 0.68%. To lure advertisers and ecommerce integrations, they have to show its not Google driving every sale.

People like coffee. People like coffeemakers. People like coffeemakers that make great coffee. That's why you should look into the EA82, Krups' fanciest coffee maker, an all-automatic espresso and long coffee maker that makes a nearly perfect cup with your own beans nearly every time. It's probably one of the best home, push-button coffee makers I've ever used.

Today is beta-release day at Mozilla, and the organization is launching new beta versions of Firefox for the desktop and Android. This time around, the desktop version is set to get the most interesting updates, including the new IonMonkey just-in-time JavaScript compiler, as well as support for Macs with Retina displays and W3C Touch Event support for machines with touchscreens. On Android, Firefox now offers better phishing protection and - as an opt-in - search suggestions.

Zillow just announced that it has acquired the San Francisco-based rental and real estate search site
HotPads for $16 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2012. Veenome, a startup that analyzes video content to improve ad targeting (as well as analytics and SEO), just announced that it has raised $600,000 in new funding. The company is also announcing a partnership with video ad network
BrightRoll. Veenome CEO Kevin Lenane said this is part of a larger shift in strategy — the startup originally focused on providing its services to publishers, but is now trying to work with networks. Turns out that selling to publishers was a bigger challenge than expected (Lenane said many are "not as motivated by revenue as you might think"), while the new approach should give Veenome wider reach.
