Utah-based
AtTask has raised $13 million for its collaborative work management software as a service (SaaS) according to
documents filed with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). Names of the investors were not disclosed. AtTask has previously raised $7 million from
OpenView Partners. It's unclear at this point if this new $13 million investment is a Series B or Series C round. Company executives did not respond to requests for information about the funding before the posting of this story.

You know the feeling, you're trying to navigate through apps to distract yourself from the mind numbing boredom of a tech conference let's say, and all of a sudden you accidentally press too hard on your iPhone's home button and boom, the the tell-tale tone of inattention interrupts your flow -- Siri butting in out of nowhere with, "What can I help you with?"

Microsoft today
unveiled a new corporate logo, its first large-scale logo redesign since 1987. Everyone with a working set of eyeballs can weigh in on whether they like it or not -- and many people have with quite amusing results. But it's always good to get insight from an expert, someone who focuses on this kind of thing full-time. So I was really pleased to have the opportunity to talk with
Armin Vit, the co-founder of Austin, Texas-based graphic design firm
UnderConsideration and the editor of
Brand New, a popular blog which obsessively monitors and critiques corporate logo designs and redesigns (if it's not in your RSS reader, it ought to be -- it's one of my favorites.)

Tagwhat tries to connect online content to real-world locations, and it's taking that idea step further with a new feature that it calls the Superslider. Co-founder and CEO Dave Elchoness says that there's an enormous amount of content on the web that's related to location but not geotagged — which means that you might completely miss the relevance of a neighborhood or building as you pass through. For example, if you're traveling to New York and you walk past
Katz's Deli, you might miss out on the fact that it's the setting for the famous "I'll have what she's having" scene in
When Harry Met Sally. In fact, I've been inside the deli several times without knowing that. (I did watch my friends eat a particularly disgusting meal there, so it wasn't a total loss.)

Last week
tens of thousands of migrants from India's northeast region fled urban areas rumor ricocheted through text messages and social media that Muslims would attack them after Ramadan. Fake photos added to the rumors credibility. Given how
forward button happy we can be in the U.S., I can't help but wonder if a similar panic could happen here. I spoke with
Shlok Vaidya, a former Department of Defense consultant turned entrepreneur in residence at the
Tech Ranch Austin incubator, about how this happened in India and what it would take for something like that to happen here.

Last week we got an email from ski lift ticket e-retailer
Liftopia about a big deal it inked to be
the exclusive tech platform for
the Mountain Collective, a new partnership of four elite ski resorts: Alta, Aspen/Snowmass, Jackson Hole, and Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows. That news was interesting, but almost more interesting was the fact that Liftopia was doing business and reaching out to press in August -- somehow I'd assumed this would be the off-season for the company. In fact, though, Liftopia tells me that its summers have become just as bustling as its winters.

"So normally there would be an ad in this spot. But you're using an ad-blocker like a boss. Here's a solution: You donate $5 to us once, & we remove all ads from the site forever." That's the text from a sidebar banner appearing on dating site
OkCupid to users with ad-blocking software installed. This is not about offering a premium option with extra features and services. That's old news. It's about directly courting those with ad-blockers to pay for what they consume and uphold their end of the value exchange. And I think it's going to catch on with other sites too.

As surely as the seasons turn and the sun races across the sky, Bag Week is upon us once again. Last year I took a risk by taking a white Ogio backpack for a spin (surprise: it still looks pretty good!), and this time around I decided to step out of my comfort zone again with the comparatively tiny
HEX Fleet Messenger bag ($79.99).

Salesforce.com just made an interesting announcement. It is tweeting its results as CEO Marc Benioff talks about the results in the company conference call. The company is reporting second quarter revenues of $732 million, up 34% compared to last year. Earnings per share were 42 cents. Wall Street expected EPS of 39 cents and revenues of $728.15M.

Disney is getting in on the TV Everywhere game in a big way, by bringing even more of its live kids content online with partner Comcast. The move will help Disney reach its viewers on new platforms, and offer up new ways for them to access its content online. Up until recently, most TV Everywhere content was on demand. So you could watch cable TV episodes of content online soon after it had aired. So video apps like HBO GO or even most of the content on
Comcast's Xfinity TV website were filled with on-demand content. But Disney is making a big push behind live content through a number of new apps and web experiences.

Onswipe, which optimizes websites for touch interface like the iPad, is announcing two big executive hires today — Jared Hand, who is the company's first chief revenue officer, and Rich Bloom, its first chief operating officer. CEO and co-founder Jason Baptiste that after a year focused on building product and signing up publishers, Hand and Bloom will lead the company's efforts to expand its business side. Hand, who was previously vice president of sales at mobile ad company Jumptap, will be hiring an ad team. That doesn't mean bringing on an army of sales people, Baptiste says — instead, the initial hires will focus on ad product and engineering.

When Twitter published its
latest thinking on how its API would evolve, and what
developers it wanted to leave behind, it noted that one of the areas (quadrants, if you will) it wanted to emphasize more in future was enterprise. Today we get more of a clue why:
HootSuite, an enterprise-focused Twitter client that actually got a name-check in that post, is teaming up with Twitter to sell advertising on the social network. A promotion that went live today will see some 30,000 HootSuite Pro premium clients receive $100 in vouchers for ads on Twitter, with the offer redeemable through the HootSuite dashboard. The move is aimed at the many small/medium businesses rather than larger enterprises that use HootSuite, and comes in the wake of several other efforts Twitter has made to target smaller companies for ads.

"In the Studio" continues this week by hosting a venture capitalist who, after earning degrees in electrical engineering and management science, went on to assume a number of engineering roles in industry, such as designing, marketing, and selling software, before he ended up on the other side of the table, scouring the earth for and investing in tools and services he wish he had at his disposal while working in the field.
Karan Mehandru, now a Principal with Trinity Ventures, brings nearly a decade's worth of engineering and operational experience to venture, focusing his
investments on the enterprise IT space broadly. In this conversation,
Mehandru and I discuss the changing landscape in online marketing, specifically new software platforms to handle marketing automation and social media management. As Mehandru explains, the change in marketing channels forces larger companies to also change the manner in which they prospect and target customers, as well as creating opportunities for more integrated and automated solutions to harmonize many aspects of sales and marketing efforts.

Amazon PR has just sent out invites for a press conference next month in Santa Monica. Historically, the online retailer has held press conferences in New York for various Kindle-related launches. The event will take place at Barker Hangar, a 35,000 sq. ft venue that claims to be the largest stage on the westside.

As mobile invades the enterprise, companies and IT admins need comprehensive security offerings that offer protection for iOS and Android. Enter
Clutch Mobile, a recently launched startup which gives companies three layers of protection around the device, apps, and network to protect critical data. The company is also announcing an undisclosed round of funding from Sequoia Capital. The software basically gives IT admins tools to prevent and mitigate data breaches, ensure compliance, and expand threat visibility on employee mobile phones. On the app layer, Clutch Mobile allows organizations to lock down and enforce precise usage policies on specific applications with App Protector, while all other apps are monitored by Clutch Mobile's proprietary app intelligence technology. Admins can also enforce policies and monitor for compromises.

Johnny looked Amanda in the eye. They had only been dating for a couple of weeks, but in a summer romance, just before heading back to college, weeks seemed like forever. And yet, were still never enough. He nervously patted down his own pockets, as if he had forgotten something, and then sighed with relief when he felt the cassette tape secure in the breast pocket of his flannel shirt.

More and more, people are shooting videos on their phones. But once the video is done, what do they do with it? For most users, those videos sit there, unused and unshared, on the mobile device. A few startups have emerged to help users create more entertaining videos and share them with friends. The latest in this batch is
Lumify, which has built an iPhone app that creates awesome 20-second videos that can be quickly and easily uploaded to Facebook. The
Lumify iPhone app, which is available on the App Store today, provides one of the easiest ways to automatically edit videos together. All users have to do is pick a few pieces of video from their Camera Rolls, choose to "Lumify" those videos, and pick a soundtrack to run in the background. The app then stitches together a montage of that video goodness.

"It's slow" no more.
Facebook answers one its top complaints today with the release of
v5 of its iOS app that's two times faster because it's built on Objective-C not HTML5. The navigation is mostly the same, but the app launches, photos load, and the feed shows new stories twice as quickly in the new app that is rolling out to the App Store over the course of the day
if you don't see it already. Content is cached between views, all the features of the Messenger standalone app are now built in, a drop-down "new stories" banner alerts you to fresh news feed content in real-time, and a Facebook for
iPad app update lets users view Timeline. Facebook's iOS mobile product manager Mick Johnson tells me that "We feel the pain points [regarding slowness] pretty harshly ourselves...so this major update to the Facebook for iOS app is focused on one thing -- speed."
